Team-up crop diversification and weed management: PRODIVA. Better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European organic arable cropping systems. Organic Eprints

The research-network PRODIVA focuses on a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European arable cropping systems. The goal is to maintain diverse arable weed vegetation that is manageable in the long-term and could fulfil other necessary system-functions including support of beneficial organisms. The partners in PRODIVA will synthesize knowledge from terminated and running research projects and set-up selected new experiments on cover crops and variety resp. crop mixtures. Within the ERA-net CORE Organic Plus transnational programmes supported project PRODIVA producing of the information required for a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European organic arable cropping systems was started. To fulfill the goal of this project- not to eradicate weed problems, which is unlikely to happen in any arable farming system, but to maintain a diversified and manageable weed flora that can support beneficial organisms- there were data from ongoing long-termed cropping system experiments from Latvia analyzed. Problematic weed species in organic arable agriculture around the Baltic Sea - An expert database Organic Eprints

Weeds are a perpetual challenge in Organic agriculture. However, they serve multiple ecosystem services and a low competitive weed cover can be tolerated. Adding to this, is the fact that only a few species prove problematic for both the crop and the farmer. The international PRODIVA project researches the effect of crop diversity strategies on the diversity of weed communities, hypothesizing that by increasing the weed diversity, the development of problematic weeds will mitigated. Diversification of crop sequences (WP 1): Perennial weed species can be managed when cover crops / green manure crops are included in the crop sequence but interventions must be species dependent, e.g. Elytrigia repens can be promoted by green manures because they prevent post-harvest cultivations. Crop diversity - a crucial remedy for weed management in organic cropping Organic Eprints

A wide variety of crop species in crop rotations has turned out an essential means to obtain diversification in organic cropping systems. Moreover, the potential of cover crops to assist the main crop in weed suppression has been studied in Denmark, Finland and Latvia. Long-term field experiments in Denmark and Latvia demonstrated that crops with different life cycles and life spans in crop sequence resulted in a relatively low and manageable pressure of annual weeds. The study was part of the PRODIVA project (Core Organic Plus) in which crop diversification for better weed management has been studied and presented in the 18th EWRS Symposium.

Spring cereal variety mixtures and their relevance for weed suppression in agroecological conditions of Latvia Organic Eprints

Good weed suppression ability is required characteristic for crops grown in organic conditions. Some authors report that crop variety mixtures can be more effective in weed suppression than the varieties in pure sowings (DidonandRodriguez,2006). Some other studies show that variety mixtures do not suppress weeds better than their pure components(Kautetal.,2008). The aim of the present study was to evaluate spring cereal(barleyandoat)variety mixtures for their weed suppression ability in agroecological conditions of Latvia. Genotype and environment interaction on field pea cultivars in organic cropping system Organic Eprints

Like other grain legumes, also field pea globally is important sources of plant protein and their growing have also positive effect on soil fertility. But, there are some constraints in their production, such pests and diseases and unstable yield. A high biodiversity and the selection of appropriate cultivars are important factors for the stability of agricultural systems especially in organic farming. Corresponding genotype choice for pea growing in mixtures with cereals can be one of the possibilities which enhances stable yield through field environment changes based on species diversity.
