The suppression of weeds exerted by the crop plays a significant role for weed management in organic crop production. Crop species have different competitive abilities against weeds but also crop varieties vary in their suppression of weeds. Previous studies with varieties of spring cereals have demonstrated marked differences in the suppression of weeds caused by different attributes, such as stem height and leaf area index. However, little is known when different varieties of the same cereal species are mixed in different compositions both in terms of the number of varieties included and the seed rates at which they are established. Adding to this, is the fact that only a few species prove problematic for both the crop and the farmer. Implications - Specific annual and perennial weeds are a perpetual challenge in the process of tuning up sustainable Organic production. To utilize the perspective of agro-biodiversity would both improve crop yields as well as conserve the ecosystem services of this agriculture system. The successful use of crop diversity strategies provides an additional tool in the toolbox of the farmers, giving them a) an overview of problematic weed species and b) the opportunity to plan their crop diversity based weed management over the course of years in the future.

Spring cereal variety mixtures and their relevance for weed suppression in agroecological conditions of Latvia Organic Eprints

Good weed suppression ability is required characteristic for crops grown in organic conditions. Some authors report that crop variety mixtures can be more effective in weed suppression than the varieties in pure sowings (DidonandRodriguez,2006). Some other studies show that variety mixtures do not suppress weeds better than their pure components(Kautetal.,2008). The aim of the present study was to evaluate spring cereal(barleyandoat)variety mixtures for their weed suppression ability in agroecological conditions of Latvia. This report includes some results from the ERA-NET CoreOrganicPLUS project “Crop Diversification and Weeds(PRODIVA)”.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate spring cereal(barley and oat)variety mixtures for their weed suppression ability in agroecological conditions of Latvia. It was concluded that in two-years tudy,investigated spring cereal variety mixtures did not show better ability to suppress weeds if compared to their pure components.Additional studies would be necessary to evaluate root development and allelopathic activity of crop and weed plants.

The research-network PRODIVA focuses on a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European arable cropping systems. The goal is to maintain diverse arable weed vegetation that is manageable in the long-term and could fulfil other necessary system-functions including support of beneficial organisms. Weeds remain to be the main challenge within this agricultural system, especially perennials in the north European realm. UNDER-SOWING EFFICIENCY FOR WEED MANAGEMENT IN SPRING CEREALS Organic Eprints

The data on weediness from the ongoing crop rotation experiment at the State Priekuli Plant Breeding institute were analysed on the basis of hypothesis that under-sowing in spring cereals can improve weed management. Grass/clover mixture (Trifolium pratense L. and Phleum pratense L.) as under- sowing in spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was grown for one and two seasons in six field crop rotation. Numbers of weed plants in spring (BBCH 20 – 29) were recorded using 0.1 m2 big frame in 10 places; plant biomass of under-sown crops and weeds were sampled within 1.0 x 1.0 m squares after the first cut in the following year after harvesting of main crop (barley). The main reason for controlling weed abundance in agricultural crops is the risk for qualitative and quantitative reductions in crop yields. Although there are no simple standard solutions available for weed control in organic agriculture, however, some cultural practices—in particular, undersow in spring cereals—can be critical components of weed management. Weed biomass in cereals depending growing in pure stand or mixtures Organic Eprints

There started field experiments at State Priekuli Plant Breeding Institute, in cooperation with other Nordic countries research institutes from Denmark, Germany, Poland, Sweden and Finland, to fulfil tasks of Core Organic Plus project 'Weeds and Biodiversity'(PRODIVA). One of the research project hypothesis was based on the assumption that crop and variety mixtures have greater suppressive abilities against weeds than the sole crop and variety. The first results confirm this. Between the three studied oat varieties best weed suppresion show variety 'Kalli'; among the four tested spring barley varieties-'Maali’.
