Team-up crop diversification and weed management: PRODIVA. Better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European organic arable cropping systems. Organic Eprints

The research-network PRODIVA focuses on a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European arable cropping systems. The goal is to maintain diverse arable weed vegetation that is manageable in the long-term and could fulfil other necessary system-functions including support of beneficial organisms. The partners in PRODIVA will synthesize knowledge from terminated and running research projects and set-up selected new experiments on cover crops and variety resp. crop mixtures. Moreover, we will interact with partners from farming practice and extension services in organic agriculture. Within the ERA-net CORE Organic Plus transnational programmes supported project PRODIVA producing of the information required for a better utilization of crop diversification for weed management in North European organic arable cropping systems was started. Cover crops in cereals – better companions than weeds? Organic Eprints

Cover crops have gained popularity in cereal cropping now that they are one of the subsidized options in agri-environmental schemes of the EU. Several studies on cover/catch crops affecting nutrient leaching have been published but less information is available concerning their applicability for weed management. Weed biomass in cereals depending growing in pure stand or mixtures Organic Eprints

There started field experiments at State Priekuli Plant Breeding Institute, in cooperation with other Nordic countries research institutes from Denmark, Germany, Poland, Sweden and Finland, to fulfil tasks of Core Organic Plus project 'Weeds and Biodiversity'(PRODIVA). One of the research project hypothesis was based on the assumption that crop and variety mixtures have greater suppressive abilities against weeds than the sole crop and variety. The first results confirm this. Between the three studied oat varieties best weed suppresion show variety 'Kalli'; among the four tested spring barley varieties-'Maali’.

The data on weediness from the ongoing crop rotation experiment at the State Priekuli Plant Breeding institute were analysed on the basis of hypothesis that under-sowing in spring cereals can improve weed management. Grass/clover mixture (Trifolium pratense L. and Phleum pratense L.) as under- sowing in spring barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was grown for one and two seasons in six field crop rotation. Numbers of weed plants in spring (BBCH 20 – 29) were recorded using 0.1 m2 big frame in 10 places; plant biomass of under-sown crops and weeds were sampled within 1.0 x 1.0 m squares after the first cut in the following year after harvesting of main crop (barley). Weeds are a perpetual challenge in Organic agriculture. However, they serve multiple ecosystem services and a low competitive weed cover can be tolerated. Adding to this, is the fact that only a few species prove problematic for both the crop and the farmer.
