A temperatura e o desenvolvimento larval de Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae) Zoologia
Strixino,Giovanni; Strixino,Susana Trivinho.
Development rate, survival and growth of a neotropical midge, Chironomus sancticaroli, were determined in laboratory at different temperatures. The "lower thermal limit" is 12ºC and the "thermal constant", characteristic for the species, varies from 140-144 day-degree. These results pointed out to a high development when compared with species of temperate areas and permit to expect, for C. sancticaroli, 16-18 generations/year, in natural conditions.

A variabilidade espacial das famílias de Coleoptera (Insecta) entre fragmentos de Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana (Bioma Araucária) e plantação de Pinus elliottii Engelmann, no Parque Ecológico Vivat Floresta, Tijucas do Sul, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Ganho,Norma G.; Marinoni,Renato C..

Aguiar,Antonio José Camillo; Martins,Celso Feitosa.
The trap-nesting bees of Guaribas Biological Reserve were studied during one year. Three areas with different vegetation types were sampled, open savanas, closed forest, and a mosaic of these two types. Twelve species of trap-nesting bees were observed, four of which are parasites. The most abundant species were Centris tarsata (Smith, 1879), C. analis (Fabricius, 1804), Tetrapedia diversipes KJug, 1810, and Mesocheira bicolor (Fabricius, 1804). Nesting of Centris tarsata and Mesocheira bicolor occurred mainly during the dry season, while Centris analis and Tetrapedia diversipes did not show any seasonal preferences. Mesocheira bicolar occurred only in the nests of C. tarsata, parasitizing more than 50% of the nests and representing 23.2% of the...

Abelhas Euglossini (Apidae) de áreas de Mata Atlântica: abundância, riqueza e aspectos biológicos Zoologia
Peruquetti,Rui Carlos; Campos,Lúcio Antonio de Oliveira; Coelho,Claudia Diniz Pinto; Abrantes,Célio Vicente Machado; Lisboa,Luciane Cristina de Oliveira.
Collection data of Euglossinae males from Parque Estadual do Rio Doce (PERD) and Viçosa, both areas with remnants of Atlantic Rain Forest (Mata Atlântica) in Minas Gerais state, Brazil are presented. Comparisons made among three fragments with different sizes and states of disturbance from Viçosa showed differences in abundance of most common species and apparently, Eulaema nigrita Lepeletir, 1841 can be an useful indicator of disturbed sites. Some populations of euglossine bees seems to be restrict to a forest fragment, there being few or no flow of individuals or species of one fragment to another, even when they are only 1 km apart. 15 species of euglossines were sampled in PERD, and the most abundant was Eulaema cingulata (Fabricius, 1804). Abrigos diurnos, composição de colônias, dimorfismo sexual e reprodução do morcego hematófago Desmodus rotundus (E. Geoffroy) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil Zoologia
Gomes,Murilo Novaes; Uieda,Wilson.

Abundance and composition of Rotifera in an abandoned meander lake (Lago Amapá) in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil Zoologia
Keppeler,Erlei Cassiano; Hardy,Elsa Rodrigues.
The rotifer community in Lago Amapá (abandoned meander lake of the Rio Acre floodplain) was investigated with respect to seasonal changes. Sampling was performed at three collection stations, generally weekly, during the dry season between May 8, 1997 and October 31, 1997, and during the rainy season between January 2, 1998 and February 24, 1998. The density and composition of rotifer species (48 taxons of rotifers) were determined, and their diversity and abundance were observed to be greater, respectively, at high-water and low-water. Anova was performed, by means of the F test, to test for seasonal differences in environmental variables and rotifers, showing that there was a highly statistically significant difference for pH and transparency (p <...
