The plankton fauna neritization in the Mediterranean Seas basin is discussed. Neritization is an increase of the neritic species percentage in zooplankton composition from the Mediterranean to the Black and Sea of Azov; It has been shown that the percentage of oceanic species decreases considerably in the Mediterranean Sea, adjacent to Gibraltar strait if compared with the Atlantic region, and the share of neritic – oceanic and neritic species increases correspondingly. Some of these species were observed in the open sea. In the Black Sea, oceanic species are absent. Observation of microbial carbonate build-ups growing at methane seeps near the upper boundary of the gaszhydrate stability zone in the Black sea IBSS Repository

Extensive dredge sampling carried out in May-June 2004 in the deeper part of the Dnepr paleo-delta area (NW Black Sea) yielded for the first time chimney-shaped carbonate microbial build-ups, which occur at methane seeps close to upper boundary of the gas-hydrate stability zone (~ 700 m). Carbonate samples taken with a benthic trawl represent fragments of the uppermost, middle and lowest parts of the build-up; they are similar morphologically to those found previously at the shallower and deeper methane seeps in the Black Sea. At the same time, the perforated, plate-like carbonates in the lowest parts of the build-up provide first indications that gas channels are formed during the earliest growth phase of these microbial structures. Occurrence of the bathypelagic lavrae of the polychaete, Vigtorniella zaikai in the southern part of the Black Sea IBSS Repository

The bathypelagic larvae of the polychaete, Vigtorniella zaikai, were found in the southern part of the Black Sea for the first time. The findings were made in the depths from 85 – 110 to 150 – 180 m at 14 stations. Maximum density (119 ind m-3) of the larvae was registered in suboxic zone (<10mM dissolved oxygen content, DOC), immediately above the hydrogen sulphide seawater layer. Vertical distribution of pelagic larvae of other polychaetes associated with V. zaikai was also studied. The deepest seawater layer adjoining redox zone was inhabited by V. zaikai, Protodrilus sp. and the larvae of Phyllodocidae gen. sp. These taxa compose the bathypelagic polychaetes fauna.

Organic carbon and oil hydrocarbons in bottom sediments of Sevastopol Bay (the Black Sea) IBSS Repository

The paper summarizes data available from the literature and recently obtained about interannual variations of the content of organic carbon, chloroform bitumenoids and oil hydrocarbons found in bottom sediments of Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea). For the recent years the bottom sediment has been receiving a rich inflow of organic matter. Localities where organic carbon content is especially high appeared owing to special sedimentation conditions and unevenly distributed anthropogenic load on the bay's water area. As the result, such sediments have reductive properties which foster accumulation of bitumenoids and oil hydrocarbons.

Pelagic ostracods (Halocyprididae) of the Brandsfield Strait, Antarctica IBSS Repository

Results of the study of pelagic ostracods (Halocyprididae) from the western Bransfield Strait are discussed. The data were obtained using zooplankton samples collected in March 2002 during the 7th Ukrainian Antarctic expedition. Maximum sampling depths varied from 200 to 1000 m. Eight halocyprid species were found. Three species were dominant throughout the entire sampling depth: Metaconchoecia isocheira (in the layers 0 – 500 and >500 m it contributed 44 and 31 % respectively to the halocyprid population), Alacia belgicae (28 and 23 %), and Alacia hettacra (24 and 21 %). Seasonal cycles of the Penilia abundance were compared, over five coastal regions-the north-western part of the Black Sea (Sevastopol Bay), the northern part of the Adriatic Sea (Gulf of Trieste), the north-eastern Atlantic (Vigo coast), the north-western Mediterranean basin (Barcelona coast), and the north-western part of the Arabian Sea (the Gulf of Oman). Satellite derived monthly data were used, to analyze coupling between the Penilia abundance, sea surface temperature, and chlorophyll a concentration over these regions. Приведены описание и рисунки марит нового вида трематод — Peracreadium gibsoni sp. nov., зарегистрированного у черноморского зубарика Diplodus puntazzo (=Puntazzo puntazzo). Вид отличается от наиболее близкого P.characis (Stossich, 1886) особенностями строения метратерма, соотношением длин бурсы и брюшной присоски, а также размеров фаринкса и присосок. Род Peracreadium Nicoll, 1909 впервые отмечается в Черном море.

We suppose an important impact of synthetic biology (SB) on the future development in aquaculture. A synthetic, constructive approach is proposed for exploring, improvement of natural resources of Black Sea in the anoxic zone with hydrogen sulfide. In addition, to test the Boaden's hypothesis–whether an obligatorily anaerobic metazoan may be possible–we consider an opportunity to reconstruct those organisms. At the beginning of this long-term perspective the challenge has been analyzed.

Photosynthetic characteristics of phytoplankton in the western Black Sea during the autumn bloom. IBSS Repository

In the autumn of 2005 photosynthetic characteristics of phytoplankton were studied along transects from a coast to deep-waters in the western and southern Black Sea. Efficiency of photosynthesis (αB) varied from 0.012 to 0.068 mg C (mg Chl)-1h-1(μE m-2 s-1)-1. Light – saturated rate of chlorophyll a-normalized photosynthesis (P) ranged from 5 mg C (mg Chl)-1 h-1 in the deep-waters to 12 mg C (mg Chl)-1 h-1 in the shelf waters. In the shelf area P and αB varied by a factor of 3. Variability of these parameters was as lower as that of the chlorophyll concentration. The mean αB and P values at the shelf were higher than those of the deep-water region. The phodoadaptive strategy of phytoplankton was characterized by increasing of αB at lower light levels....
