INTRODUCTION Extensive collections of frogs from Queensland (reported in detail, Straughan, 1966) failed to include the species Cyclorana inermis (Peters), although Slevin (1955) recorded it as abundant in central Queensland. However a widely ranging species of ground Hyla (undescribed in that genus) occurred frequently in collections from central and northern Queensland. In all external features this species fitted the description of Cyclorana inermis given by Parker (1940: 17). In the present paper Peters' syntype of C. inermis (reg. no. RMNH 1888) in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, is examined, and compared with the apparently new species of Hyla. MATERIAL AND METHODS X-ray plates of the feet of the syntype were provided by the... |

Prior to hind limb development, tadpoles of the western spadefoot frog Pelobates cultripes (Pelobatidae) and dart-arrow frog Phyllobates bicolor (Dendrobatidae) possess large clear cells in the basal layer of the epidermis. These cells closely resemble Kugelzellen (KZn) of larval clawed frog, Xenopus laevis (Pipidae) and share ultrastructural traits with Leydig cells (LCs) of Caudata and Caecilia. In both species, KZn possess a transparent cytoplasm and a remarkable peripheral cytoskeleton of tonofi laments: in the arrow frog tonofi laments form bands parallel to the cell surface, in the spadefoot frog thin bundles, arranged in a three-dimensional network. KZn combine turgor (resulting from the hydrated cytoplasm) with stiffness (from peripheral... |

The holotype of Testudo vosmaeri Fitzinger, 1826 [= Geochelone vosmaeri] is RMNH 6001. The holotype of Testudo forstenii Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= lndotestudo forstenii] is RMNH 3811. I. forstenii is considered a senior synonym of T. travancorica Boulenger, 1907 because plastral colour pattern, gular measurements, and general shell morphology do not distinguish Indian populations from Indonesian populations. The lectotype of Testudo emys Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= Manouria emys] is RMNH 3808. lndotestudo and Manouria are recognized as separate genera and briefly diagnosed. In order to avoid nomenclatural confusion and conserve current usuage, the pre-Linnaean figure in Piso (1658: 105) is selected as the lectotype for Testudo geometrica Linnaeus,... |

Eighty-nine species of lizards, six of which polytypic (forming a total of 97 taxa), are presently known from Brazilian Amazonia. This number includes six species and one subspecies described as new to science in this paper: Stenocercus fimbriatus, Lepidoblepharis hoogmoedi, Leposoma osvaldoi, L. snethlageae, Tretioscincus oriximinensis, Tupinambis longilineus, and Anolis nitens tandai. Stenocercus dumerilii is resurrected from the synonymy of S. tricristatus. Bachia cophias is considered a junior synonym of B. flavescens. B. peruana is a new record from Brazil. Anolis nitens has priority over A. chrysolepis. The Amazonian Tupinambis is shown to be T. teguixin (of which T. nigropunctatus is a junior synonym). The name T. merianae should be used for T.... |

Oman material of four lizard species is described and discussed ; it comprises specimens of a previously undescribed gecko, Phyllodactylus gallagheri, two lacertids — the poorly known Lacerta jayakari Boulenger, 1887, and L. cyanura, also described here for the first time, and a skink, Ablepharus pannonicus Lichtenstein, 1823. These species have no strong affinities with any members of the mainly Saharo-Sindian fauna now occupying much of Arabia but are closely related to forms occurring to the north of the peninsula. It is probable that they are relicts of a more temperate fauna which once entered more extensively into southeastern Arabia. As might be expected, all four species are absent from the desert areas of Oman and are confined to the disjunct... |

The Magdalena River Turtle (Podocnemis lewyana) is a Colombian endemic species, endangered due to human exploitation and habitat destruction. To date, this species is poorly known ecologically and data on its genetic diversity are lacking. Here we report on the first genetic survey of the species across its distribution range. We obtained mitochondrial DNA sequences (488 bp) of the cytochrome b gene from 109 individuals. Samples belong to populations located at several different localities, grouped in five regions, along the four main river basins: Magdalena, Cauca, San Jorge, and Sinú drainages. We found two haplotypes, which differ in only one nucleotide substitution and which are represented with different frequencies in the five geographic regions.... |

We provide a partial revision of the microhylid frogs of the genus Anodonthyla, endemic to Madagascar, based on comprehensive molecular, bioacoustic and morphological data sets that include newly collected specimens from multiple localities. The molecular trees provide strong evidence for the polyphyly of several nominal species as they were previously defined, especially of Anodonthyla boulengeri and A. nigrigularis. As a consequence, we here resurrect the nomen Mantella pollicaris Boettger as Anodonthyla pollicaris from the synonymy of A. boulengeri, and we describe four new species, all with strong genetic divergences to other nominal species: Anodonthyla emilei from Ranomafana National Park, a comparatively medium- sized species characterized by a... |

The Common toad Bufo bufo sensu lato is a widespread, morphologically conserved taxon. Recent studies have uncovered deep genetic differentiation between population groups, highlighting the need to revise the current taxonomy of the group and recognize additional species. Here we investigate patterns of variation in molecular (a mitochondrial DNA restriction enzyme assay and sequence data for two nuclear DNA fragments totalling 979 bp) and 17 morphological variables in Northern France where two of these groups meet (B. bufo sensu stricto and B. spinosus), in order to delineate their contact zone and uncover characters that would allow discrimination of the two taxa. Mitochondrial DNA data show an abrupt transition from areas where B. bufo is present to... |
