Family composition of Muscoidea communities in adjacent areas of secondary tropical forest and pasture field in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Zoologia
Caldas,Astrid; Almeida,Josimar Ribeiro de; A'Almeida,José Mario.
The Muscoidea community of two adjacent areas was sampled. For eight months one area was of secondary tropical forest and the other was an open field used for cattle grazing. The main purpose of the study was to investigate if there would be any differences in abundance, family diversity, community composition and bait attractiveness. Results suggest that the change in the environment resulted in a reduction of overall abundance, but not a reduced diversity in terms of families. None of the families was led to a marked decrease or increase, as might be expected in a disturbed environment. The changes observed in the community composition were not significant for the distribution and abundance rank of the families within that community. The environmental...

Farming systems as an ecological refuge against the parasitism by Edotia doellojuradoi (Isopoda: Idoteidae) on Mytilus edulis (Mollusca: Mytilidae) in Aysén, Chile RChHN
VALENCIA,VALENTINA; GEORGE-NASCIMENTO,MARIO.
This study compares the prevalence and abundance of the isopod Edotia doellojuradoi in the mussel Mytilus edulis, between water column rope farming systems and nearby natural benthic beds at Puerto Raúl Marín Balmaceda (43° 46' S, 72° 57' W), Aysén, Chile, taking into account the maximum shell length of the host as a covariate. In addition, the damage caused by E. doellojuradoi was assessed with the visual inspection of the gills, according to the protocol of Zaixso et al. (2009). The isopod was found almost exclusively in natural benthic habitats, where the prevalence increased with the length of the host. The isopod is a macroparasite and not a commensal as previously suggested because it causes gill damage to the mussel, which increased with the...

Fishes community composition and patterns of species distribution in Neotropical streams Biota Neotropica
Cavalheiro,Laísa Wociechoski; Fialho,Clarice Bernhardt.
Abstract: The ichthyofauna of streams in the Neotropical region is not yet fully known. This study aims to investigate the ichthyofauna composition of six streams of the Ijuí River sub-basin, Rio Grande do Sul State, inserted in the Uruguay River basin, as to contribute to the knowledge of fishes species richness and distribution in the south of Brazil. Sampling was carried out between July 2015 and May 2016, bimonthly, using the technique of electric fishing to collect the fishes. Spatial variations (per sampled stream) in the ichthyofauna composition were tested with a permutational multivariate analysis of variance. In total, we collected 5,029 individuals from 55 species, 13 families and five orders. From these species, 17 are endemic to the Uruguay...

Further observations on zooplankton of the Potengi Estuary (Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil) with special reference to the larvae of Brachyura (Crustacea, Decapoda) Zoologia
Sankarankutty,C; Oliveira,J.E. Lins; Cunha,K.M.F; Silva,A.C.C; Barroca,E.V.G.
The present paper deals with data on zooplankton collected from the estuary of Potengi, Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil covering a period of one year from October 1992 to October 1993. Three fixed stations within the estuary located at varying distances from the mouth of the river were sampled. Sampling was done monthly when the tide was lowest. Analysis of the samples has shown clear pattern of seasonal variations in abundance of the dominant zooplankton components which are composed of Copepoda, Appendicularia, larvae of Brachyura, larvae of Cirripedia and Chaetognalha. A detailed study of the larvae of Brachyura was also attempted which showed that seven species can be identified in the samples, of which those of Aratus pisonii (H. Milne Edwards) and...

Humpback whale Megaptera novaeangliae (Cetartiodactyla: Balaenopteridae) group sizes in line transect ship surveys: An evaluation of observer errors Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bortolotto,Guilherme A.; Danilewicz,Daniel; Andriolo,Artur; Zerbini,Alexandre N..
ABSTRACT Accurate estimates of group sizes through line transect sampling methods are important to correctly ascertain the abundance of animals that occur in groups. Since the average observed group size is a component of the distance sampling formula, bias in these data leads to biased abundance estimates. This study aimed to evaluate the potential errors in group size estimation during line transect ship surveys to estimate abundances of the humpback whale, Megaptera novaeangliae (Borowski 1781). In a research cruise along the Brazilian coast, an experiment to collect group size information was conducted from two different sighting platforms on the same vessel. Group sizes were recorded by primary observers at first sighting (PO1) and, in some cases,...

Ichthyoplankton distribution and abundance off southeastern and southern Brazil BABT
Freitas,Débora Martins de; Muelbert,José Henrique.
This study describes the distribution of fish eggs and larvae along the southeastern and southern Brazilian coast. Plankton samples were collected at 85 stations using a Bongo net, and water salinity and temperature were profiled with a CTD. Results showed that fish eggs and larvae, and zooplankton biovolume were distributed in coastal waters with mean temperature of 23&#186C and salinity between 33 and 34. The largest egg abundance occurred along Iguape (24&#186'S) with a partial overlap with zooplankton biovolume and fish larvae were most abundant near shore close to Santos (24&#186S). These protected coastal waters presented a surface layer with lower salinity and higher temperatures, while the bottom layer had cooler water. Ichthyoplankton...

Impact of crop management systems on soil nematode communities in South Brazil Scientia Agricola
Machado,Andressa Cristina Zamboni; Zagatto,Maurício Rumenos Guidetti; Skora Neto,Francisco; Silva,Santino Aleandro da; Zanão Júnior,Luiz Antonio.
ABSTRACT The analysis of nematode communities allows inferring consequences of management practices on the soil food web. We studied the taxonomic structure of nematode communities in preserved areas of the Atlantic forest (native forest = NF) in Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil, and in three different agroecosystems in neighboring areas to assess the effect of agricultural land use on nematode assemblages. Agroecosystems were located in a red latosol cropped during 30 years under conventional tillage (CT), no-tillage (NT), and minimal tillage (MT). We collected ten composite soil samples in each area in the summer. Nematodes were extracted by Baermann funnel and fixed with formalin. Subsequently, individuals were classified into taxonomic groups and...

Influence of pitfall designs and use of baits on the capture of small mammals in Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i4.17498 Biological Sciences
Rocha, Daniel Gomes da; Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá / Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia; Passamani, Marcelo; Universidade Federal de Lavras.
Each kind of trap tends to be selective on species sampled, in a way that each one only reveals part of the abundance and species richness of the community sampled. In this way, in order to know the factors that affect the success of sampling methods is crucial for a better planning of experiments and data analysis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors that affect the success of pitfall traps in capturing small mammals, such as trap size, designs and use of bait. The study was carried out in two reserves inside the campus of the Universidade Federal de Lavras (UFLA), in South Minas Gerais State, Brazil. In total, 65 specimens belonging to 8 species were caught. Different types of trap design (Y-shaped and I-shaped) have not influenced the...

Influencia de las interacciones con el factor Año en los índices anuales de abundancia obtenidos por modelos lineales generales utilizando datos de Captura por Unidad de Esfuerzo OceanDocs
Hernandez, D.R.; Perrotta, R.G..
The problem in the definition of a relative annual abundance index using a General Linear Model is posed. The possible factors generating changes in the catch per unit effort (CPUE) are discussed and the parameterization of the model is analyzed, in particular the Sigma-restrictive parameterization. This report considers the problem caused by the presence of interactions of first order that include the factor Year in the model. It has been mathematically demonstrated that in the presence of these interactions, the index series is not proportional to the abundance annual mean of the resource. An approach of practical order to evaluate the possible effect of the interactions that include the factor Year in the index is considered using the percentage of...

Integration of discards in the roundnose grenadier stock assessment in ICES division Vb, subaera VI, VII ArchiMer
Pawlowski, Lionel; Lorance, Pascal.
We present a series of exploratory stock assessments for roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris) from estimates of catch data based on information and assumption of discards and landing statistics. It is a common practice to consider landings data as a substitute of catch data to perform stock assessments. When a significant portion of the catch is discarded, this assumption is likely to be misleading as assessment methods will provide underestimated stock size.
