The lysosomal stability as a biomarker for the determination of pollution in aquatic environments BABT
Nazar,Maria Loreto; Rodrigues,Luiz Erlon Araujo; Nascimento,Iracema.
This work studied the effects caused by five different formulae of gasoline on the stability of the lysosomes isolated from the liver of the tilapia fish (Oreochromis niloticus). The functional integrity of the lysosomal membranes was evaluated via the acid phosphatase activity. The results showed that there were significant changes in the stability of the lysosomes exposed to the presence of the hydrocarbons in the environment. Therefore, considering the method's simplicity, the sensitivity of the responses and its low cost the assessment of the lysosomal activity could be an important tool for the study of the effects of pollution in the aquatic environments.

Anuran community composition along two large rivers in a tropical disturbed landscape Rev. Bras. Zool.
Almeida-Gomes,Mauricio; Rocha,Carlos Frederico Duarte; Vieira,Marcus Vinícius.
In this study we evaluated how anuran species were distributed in riparian habitats along two large rivers. Sampling was carried out between January and March 2012 in the municipality of Cachoeiras de Macacu, state of Rio de Janeiro. We delimited 20 plots along each river, ten in portions inside the forest of the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA), and with comparatively greater amount of forest cover, and ten outside REGUA, with comparatively lesser forest cover surrounding the rivers. We recorded 70 individuals from 14 frog species in the Manoel Alexandre River and 63 individuals from 15 frog species in the Guapiaçu River. The most abundant species in both rivers was Cycloramphus brasiliensis (Steindachner, 1864), and it was more abundant in sections...

Expression analysis of vasa in Asian paddle crab (Charybdis japónica) exposed to Bisphenol A Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Chen,Jianhua; Wang,Cuihua; Gao,Huan; Yan,Binlun.
Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC) with a weak estrogen-like activity in fish that is found ubiquitously in aquatic environments. However, there has been little study about BPA on the endocrine disrupting effects of crab. In the present study, cDNA of vasa was cloned and characterized in the Charybdis japonica. Histological structures of testis and expression patterns of vasa gene in the testis of C. japonica after treatment with BPA were investigated. Results: The cDNA of vasa is composed of 3051 bp with a 2166 bp open reading frame encoding 721 AA. The deduced amino acid sequence contained eight conserved domains of the DEAD-box protein family. The tissue distribution showed that vasa mRNA was specifically expressed...

Quantifying zooplankton species: use of richness estimators Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Castilho,Maria Carolina de A.; Wisniewski,Maria José dos S.; Wisniewski,Célio; Silva,Érika dos S..
ABSTRACT Richness estimators (Jackknife 1, Bootstrap, Chao 1 and ACE) were used to relate zooplankton species richness with amount of water collected per sample and number of samples throughout the year for the limnetic region of Sapucai River compartment of Furnas reservoir, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Seven 100 L samples were collected in sequence using a motor pump, and seven 70 L samples were collected in sequence using a plankton net (68 μm mesh size) in vertical hauls, to totalize 450 L, in three stations of the reservoir. Twelve monthly samplings were carried out over a year. The assessment of richness was made by analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the estimator curves. The samplings reached the asymptote from 350 L of collection with trawls...

Azole resistance in Candida spp. isolated from Catú Lake, Ceará, Brazil: an efflux-pump-mediated mechanism BJM
Brilhante,Raimunda S.N.; Paiva,Manoel A.N.; Sampaio,Célia M.S.; Castelo-Branco,Débora S.C.M.; Teixeira,Carlos E.C.; Alencar,Lucas P. de; Bandeira,Tereza J.P.G.; Monteiro,André J.; Cordeiro,Rossana A.; Pereira-Neto,Waldemiro A.; Sidrim,José J.C.; Moreira,José L.B.; Rocha,Marcos F.G..
Abstract Since, there is no study reporting the mechanism of azole resistance among yeasts isolated from aquatic environments; the present study aims to investigate the occurrence of antifungal resistance among yeasts isolated from an aquatic environment, and assess the efflux-pump activity of the azole-resistant strains to better understand the mechanism of resistance for this group of drugs. For this purpose, monthly water and sediment samples were collected from Catú Lake, Ceará, Brazil, from March 2011 to February 2012. The obtained yeasts were identified based on morphological and biochemical characteristics. Of the 46 isolates, 37 were Candida spp., 4 were Trichosporon asahii, 3 were Cryptococcus laurentii, 1 Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, and 1 was...
