The Hidden Cost of Tourism: Detecting Long-term Effects of Tourism Using Behavioral Information Ecology and Society
Lusseau, David; University of Aberdeen; d.lusseau@abdn.ac.uk.
Increasingly, whales and dolphins are the focus of tourism activities in many coastal locations. Although these activities can affect individuals and populations of cetaceans, the biological significance and hence the cost of these impacts are as yet largely unknown. This study assessed the effects of boat interactions on the behavioral budget of two populations of bottlenose dolphins (Tersiops truncatus) living in similar fjords but exposed to different levels of tourism activities. This comparison makes it possible to assess the costs of short-term avoidance strategies and the threshold at which those strategies are no longer effective. The effects of boat interactions were the same in both fjords. The resting state was the most sensitive to...

Tuyauteries composites: Installation prototype sur un bateau de peche ArchiMer
Croquette, Jean; Dufour, X; Forestier, J; Parquic, J.
A composite prototype engine cooling piping system was installed in 1990 by SBPI on a 50 meter fishing boat owned by Jego Quere. The installation on board was easy and no incident has happened since the beginning of this experiment, which is followed by a working group coordinated by Ifremer and checked by Bureau Veritas. Extended application of composite pipes may be contemplated.

Artisanal fishing boats in the Seychelles OceanDocs
Mees, C. C..
The results of a census of fishing boats on Mahe Praslin and La Digue are presented in total 439 active fishing boats were counted of which 156 were pirogues, 196 were outboards, 68 were whalers and 19 were schooners. The details are discussed in relation to the catch assessment survey conducted by Seychelles fishing Authority. An evaluation of historical data follows. the number of pirogues and outboards increased up to 1986 and declined thereafter. The number of whalers steadily increased since1985 whilst the number of schooners has not changed significantly. It is argued that the changes in boat numbers are a results of interactions between the available near shore and offshore resources, the development of commercial opportunities through the...

Artes de pesca artesanales en la costa del Ecuador OceanDocs
Castro, R.; Rosero, J..
The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics, dimensions, materials used in the fishing gear and boats currently used by the artisanal fisheries along the ecuadorian coast. Three provinces were visited (Guayas, Manabí and Esmeraldas), in which the artisanal ports with the greatest fishing effort and landings along the coast are registered. Interviews with the fishermen, identification of the fishing gear and certain measurements were taken to obtain the information on the desing, dimensions and materials used in the fishing gear as well as the techniques and principal fishing zones. Aditionally the diversity of the fishing boats was noted varying from small sailing rafts to the fast-glass boats with outboard engines.
