An overview of a diagnostic and epidemiologic reappraisal of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Iran BJID
Farahmand,Mahin; Nahrevanian,Hossein; Shirazi,Hasti Atashi; Naeimi,Sabah; Farzanehnejad,Zahra.
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a widespread tropical infection which has a high incidence rate in Iran. Leishmania tropica, the causative agent of anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL), and Leishmania major, which causes zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL), are endemic in various parts of Iran with a high incidence rate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the reappraisal of the diagnosis and epidemiology of CL in Iran, by different clinical, parasitological and molecular assays among patients suspected of CL referred to the Department of Parasitology, at the Pasteur Institute of Iran during 2006-2009. Two hundred samples from patients with ulcerative skin lesions were collected, clinical analyses were applied, data questionnaire was completed...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)-related cutaneous necrotizing vasculitis: case report and literature review BJID
Arslan,Ferhat; Batirel,Ayse; Mert,Ali; Ozer,Serdar.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is usually asymptomatic in immunocompetent patients. A mononucleosis-like syndrome may develop in some patients. Various organ involvements (eg: encephalitis, meningitis, retinitis, myocarditis, pneumonia, hepatitis, enterocolitis, neuritis), which rarely occur in immunocompetent patients, have also been reported. Cutaneous necrotizing vasculitis caused by CMV infection has been reported very rarely in the literature. Here, a case with a very rare clinical form of CMV infection, presenting with persistent fever and livedo reticularis on the extremities and cutaneous necrotizing vasculitis of the toes, is described, and the relevant literature is reviewed. This case report aims to highlight the possibility of CMV infection to...

Cutaneous toxoplasmosis in an immunosuppressed dog Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,T.S.; Turchetti,A.P.; Barbosa,F.B.S.; Bicalho,A.L.F.; Alencar,C.A.D.; Paixão,T.A.; Santos,R.L..
A seven-year-old female spayed Schnauzer was presented with cutaneous ulcerated nodular lesions shortly after the beginning of an immunosuppressive treatment for immune-mediated hemolytic disease. Cytology was performed and a great number of neutrophils and banana-shaped organisms were observed. Biopsy showed a neutrophilic and histiocytic dermatitis and panniculitis with myriads of intralesional bradyzoites cysts and tachyzoites. PCR analysis was positive for Toxoplasma gondii and negative for Neospora caninum. Immunohistochemistry confirmed intralesional T. gondii antigens. This study reports a rare case of cutaneous toxoplasmosis in an immunosuppressed dog.

Consensus of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases and Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology on the management and treatment of Kaposi's sarcoma BJID
Arruda,Érico; Jacome,Alexandre Andrade dos Anjos; Toscano,Ana Luiza de Castro Conde; Silvestrini,Anderson Arantes; Rêgo,André Santa Bárbara; Wiermann,Evanius Garcia; Cunha Jr.,Geraldo Felicio da; Melo,Heloisa Ramos Lacerda de; Morejón,Mirna Loro; Goldani,Luciano Zubaran; Pereira Jr.,Luiz Carlos; Silva,Mariliza Henrique; Treistman,Mauro Sergio; Pereira,Mônica Cristina Toledo; Romero,Patricia Maria Bezerra Xavier; Schmerling,Rafael Aron; Guedes,Rodrigo Antonio Vieira; Camargo,Veridiana Pires de.
Kaposi's sarcoma is a multifocal vascular lesion of low-grade potential that is most often present in mucocutaneous sites and usually also affects lymph nodes and visceral organs. The condition may manifest through purplish lesions, flat or raised with an irregular shape, gastrointestinal bleeding due to lesions located in the digestive system, and dyspnea and hemoptysis associated with pulmonary lesions. In the early 1980s, the appearance of several cases of Kaposi's sarcoma in homosexual men was the first alarm about a newly identified epidemic, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. In 1994, it was finally demonstrated that the presence of a herpes virus associated with Kaposi's sarcoma called HHV-8 or Kaposi's sarcoma herpes virus and its genetic sequence...

Epitheliotropic lymphoma with heart and kidney metastasis in a dog: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Araújo,C.M.T.D.; Pacheco,B.D.; Castro,J.L.C.; Farias,M.R.; Engracia Filho,J.R..
ABSTRACT A female adult dog, with a four-month history of pain and intense pruritus, which eventually resulted in sudden death, was referred for necropsy. Postmortem examination showed thoracic and abdominal serum-sanguineous exudates, multifocal infiltrative renal masses, and similar tumors in the heart. Histopathology revealed midsize infiltrative neoplastic proliferation composed of round cells, sparse cytoplasm, and large hyperchromatic nuclei. Immunohistochemistry revealed CD3+ and CD20-immunoexpression. Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the diagnosis of epitheliotropic lymphoma with cardiac and renal metastasis.

4-Phenyl-1,3-thiazole-2-amines as scaffolds for new antileishmanial agents J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Rodrigues,Carina Agostinho; Santos,Paloma Freire dos; Costa,Marcela Oliveira Legramanti da; Pavani,Thais Fernanda Amorim; Xander,Patrícia; Geraldo,Mariana Marques; Mengarda,Ana; Moraes,Josué de; Rando,Daniela Gonçales Galasse.
Abstract Background: There is still a need for new alternatives in pharmacological therapy for neglected diseases, as the drugs available show high toxicity and parenteral administration. That is the case for the treatment of leishmaniasis, particularly to the cutaneous clinical form of the disease. In this study, we present the synthesis and biological screening of eight 4-phenyl-1,3-thiazol-2-amines assayed against Leishmania amazonensis. Herein we propose that these compounds are good starting points for the search of new antileishmanial drugs by demonstrating some of the structural aspects which could interfere with the observed activity, as well as suggesting potential macromolecular targets. Methods: The compounds were easily synthesized by the...
