The histology of the salivary glands of the armadillo Dasypus hybridus (Desmarest, 1804), was studied. Two pairs of salivary glands, parotid and submaxillary, and a salivary bladder are distinguished. Parotids are located anteriorly to the submaxillary glands. They are purely serous glands and excretory intralobular ducts, intercalated and particularly striated ones, are very numerous. Submaxillary glands are of greater size. They possess two lobes, which differs in their histology and histochemistry. The anterior lobe is mixed and the presence of numerous intralobular excretory ducts is remarkable. The bigger posterior lobe is mucous. Intralobular excretory ducts are observed, but they are not as abundant as in the anterior portion

Histological Study of the Salivary Glands in Zaedyus pichiy (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) 77

The histology of the salivary glands of the armadillo Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) was studied. Three pairs of major compound tubuloacinar salivary glands, parotid, submandibular and sublingual, were distinguished. The parotid gland is histologically a serous gland. The submandibular gland consists of two lobes. The anterior lobe is composed of mixed and serous acini. The posterior lobe is predominantly mucous. There is a reservoir or salivary bladder, related with the anterior lobe. The sublingual gland is mixed, composed of mucous acini with scattered serous demilunes

The Spleen of a Specialy Adapted Mammal: The Little Hairy Armadillo Chaetophractus vellerosus, (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae). A Light and Electron Microscopic Study 77

The spleen is a multifunctional organ. Its microarchitecture reflects so well the phylogeny as the adaptation to niche in each animal group and inclusive in each species. Armadillos, as ancient and isolated mammals, show a mixture of ancestral and modern structures. In this work the microanatomy and cytology of the spleen of the little hairy armadillo Chaetophractus vellerosus was studied. The material was fixed and processed according to the typical methods for light and electron microscopy. Results show a cumulative medium sized spleen with the typical pulps. Cranial Osteology of the Armadillo Chaetophractus villosus (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) 77

The morphology and morphometry of the cranial bones of Chaetophractus villosus were studied. The skull components are morphologically similar between adults of both sexes, and follow the generalized pattern for most of described dasypodids. The morphometric analysis, however, demonstrated that the bones lying in the rostrocaudal plane are mostly longest in females, determining higher values of the total, basal and condilobasal lengths of the skull, which are the main variables that contribute to a sexual dimorphism in this species

Una nueva especie de Stegotherium Ameghino (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae, Stegotheriini) del Mioceno de la provincia de Santa Cruz (Argentina) 41

En esta contribución se describe una nueva especie de Stegotheriini (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae), Stegotherium tauberi, a base de materiales previamente asignados a Stegotherium tessellatum Ameghino y otros recientemente descubiertos. Todos los materiales provienen de afloramientos de la Formación Santa Cruz (Edad Santacrucense, Mioceno temprano tardío) ubicados entre los estuarios de los ríos Coyle y Gallegos (provincia de Santa Cruz, Argentina). Los materiales reasignados son los restos más completos para la tribu Stegotheriini. Asimismo, Stegotherium tauberi es el Stegotheriini de distribución más austral conocido.

Scanning Electron Microscopy Study of the Dorsal Surface of the Tongue in Zaedyus pichiy (Mammalia, Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) 77

The dorsal surface of the tongue of Zaedyus pichiy (Desmarest, 1804) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Conical and branched filiform, fungiform and vallate papillae are described. No foliate papillae were seen. Conical filiform papillae are distributed in the apex, both lateral edges and caudally to the vallated ones. The branched papillae represent the most numerous type of lingual papillae; they are distributed over the entire dorsal surface of the tongue. The fungiform papillae are placed among the filiform ones, more densely distributed on the tip of the lingual apex. The dorsum of the tongue of Dasypus hybridus (Desmarest, 1804) studied by scanning electron microscopy, shows conical and branched filiform, fungiform and vallate papillae. No foliate papillae were seen. Conical filiform papillae are placed in the apex of the tongue and posterior to the vallated ones. Branched papillae are compactly distributed over the entire dorsal surface of the tongue. Fungiform papillae are more abundant on the first third of the tongue and they are distributed between filiform papillae. Only two vallate papillae were observed placed in the posterior third of the tongue, surrounded by a deep grove. This paper deals with xenarthrans osteoderms assigned toDasypus aff. D. novemcinctus,Euphractus sexcinctus and Cabassous sp. The material was collected in subsurface, from 0.10 to 0.60 m in the Urso Fóssil Cave, Parque Nacional de Ubajara, State of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. The ages of sediment samples from levels 4 and 5 (depths of 0.40 and 0.50 m) were determined by thermoluminescence technique, and indicated ages of 8,000 and 8,200 years BP for each layer respectively. The presence in these layers of early Holocene xenarthrans taxa can contribute to the understanding of the biotic evolution of the northwest region of Ceará during the last 10,000 years. Differentiation and characterization of burrows of two species of armadillos in the Brazilian Cerrado 97

BACKGROUND: Signs left by some mammals such as tracks, trails, burrows, scratches, feces, hair, and others can be an important tool for species identification. This study was conducted in the Itirapina Ecological Station, in the southern Brazilian Cerrado, whose main objectives were to (1) compare the burrow morphometric variables of Cabassous unicinctus and Euphractus sexcinctus and (2) check for differences in the occurrence of foraging burrows in two different environments: areas with vegetation (shrubby grassland) and areas without vegetation (roads). Abstract: Riostegotherium yanei from the Itaboraí Basin, Brazil, is the oldest known Xenarthra. This paper aims to describe the internal morphology of the osteoderms of Riostegotherium yanei from the perspective of histology and micro-CT approaches, expanding the available data on cingulate osteoderm microstructure. Seven osteoderms of R. yanei were used for the internal microstructure description and eight of Dasypus novemcinctus for comparison. The osteoderms of Riostegotherium yanei lacks the diploë-like structure typical of glyptodonts but has a three-layered structure composed of two layers of non-Haversian compact bone enclosing a central layer of primary and secondary osteons.
