Animal welfare and eggs - cheap talk or money on the counter? Organic Eprints
Andersen, Laura Mørch.
Marginal willingness to pay for eggs carrying labels indicating different productions methods is estimated using Danish purchase data on individual level. Among other things the labels indicate environmental features and different levels of animal welfare for the hens that produce the eggs. Results show that consumers are generally willing to pay for labels indicating animal friendly production methods. It also appears that consumers living in urban areas are willing to pay more for animal welfare than people in rural areas and that people who perceive the level of animal welfare in organic eggs as higher are willing to pay more not only for organic eggs but also for other labels indicating increased animal welfare. The age of the main buyer has no...

Response of Potato to Drip and Gun Irrigation system CIGR Journal
Andersen, Mathias.
The objective of this study was to evaluate effects of different irrigation and N fertilization regimes by gun irrigation and drip-fertigation on potato production, and subsequently optimize the supply of water and N fertilizer to the growth condition of the specific season and minimize nitrate leaching without compromising profits. Four replicate plots of each treatment with varying predefined and model-based (Daisy and Aquacrop crop model) irrigation and N fertilization levels was used in the study. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment-I, treatments consisted of one drip-fertigation system (IdsNds) and two gun irrigation systems (GIdsN120 and GIaN120) to display the differences on growth, yield and water use efficiency of potato. All treatments...

Simulation of residual effects and nitrate leaching after incorporation of different ley types Organic Eprints
Berntsen, J.; Petersen, B.M.; Olesen, J.E.; Eriksen, J.; Søegaard, K..
The FASSET farm model was used to simulate production in an experiment where a grass-clover or a grass ley was either cut or grazed with dairy cows receiving low or high N sup-plements. The six different ley types were ploughed in and followed by three years with spring cereals with undersown catch crops. The original model was extended with a new grass and clover model, which included the capability to simulate rhizodeposition and root growth. The new model predicted the observed annual carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) production satisfactorily. The simulated first year residual effects of a cut grass or grass-clover ley varied between 0 and 34, while the residual effect of a grazed grass or grass-clover ley varied between 71 and 150 fertilizer equivalents...

Regnskabsstatistik for økologiske jordbrug Organic Eprints
Blume, Steffen.

Documentation of animal health in organic pig herds Organic Eprints
Bonde, M.; Baadsgaard, N.P.; Sorensen, J.T..
The health of weaned pigs should be described using several information sources to get an overall assessment of the health state in the herd. In this case study four organic pig herds each fattening between 800 and 3500 pigs per year provided data from clinical examination of a sample of animals, pathological findings at slaughter, post weaning mortality and medicine usage in the herd. Clinical symptoms were present in 8 – 18 % of the pigs, and 2 – 6 % of the pigs showed more serious symptoms of disease. At slaughter 10 – 17 % of the pigs got remarks for pathological lesions, primarily liver spots, abscesses and chronic pericarditis. The post weaning mortality varied between herds, while the usage of medicine was rather low in the herds. The herd health...

Do defaults matter? Willingness to pay to avoid GM food vis-à-vis organic and conventional food in Denmark, Great Britain and Spain AgEcon
Costa-Font, Montserrat; Tranter, Richard B.; Gil, Jose Maria; Jones, Philip J.; Gylling, Morten.
The introduction and communication of new technologies in the food industries has given rise in the past to some scientific uncertainty that hampers informed choice. Here we draw upon the case of Genetically Modified (GM) technology and, in particular, on different types of GM food, to investigate consumers’ behavioural reactions to GM food as well as their willingness to pay for avoiding GM food in three EU countries, Denmark, GB and Spain in 2007. Our unique contribution lies in that our empirical analysis concerns two food products containing different characteristics. In particular, we compare consumers’ reactions to cornflakes (to represent a processed food) and tomatoes (to represent a 'fresh' food) juxtaposed with GM and conventionally produced...

Materials and Methods REFUGIA project working paper Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy.
The organic farming structure has been analysed for all farms in Denmark 2005-2010. In 2005, the average farm size for organic farms was 50 ha, compared to 40 ha for conventional farms. For organic farms the largest average farm size in on sandy soils and for cattle farms, whereas the for conventional farms, the largest farms are on loamy soils, and cash crop, and pig farms. The farms has been classified into farm types accoring to the EUROSTAT methods. Hobby farms are defined with a number of standard working hours under 1871 timer/år (typically under 10-25 ha). These farms normally are not included in national statistics, but are important to include in the REFUGIA studies, because these farms are important for biodiversity and have a relatively higher...

Visions for organic bioenergy production in Denmark Organic Eprints
Dalgaard, Tommy; Jørgensen, Uffe; Kristensen, Inge.
There is a large potential for organic bioenergy production, which can be combined with the present food production and the provision of multiple other goods and services required by society; i.e. a cleaner aquatic environment, or nature values in cultural landscapes. This paper presents six scenarios for bioenergy production from organic farming in Denmark, with a total energy production potential of around 6.7 PJ/yr. This potential is compared to the present energy use of around 2.5 PJ/yr, and the po-tentials for energy savings equalling 0.1-0.5 PJ/yr.

N fertilizer value of legume-based catch crops Organic Eprints
De Notaris, Chiara; Sørensen, Peter; Rasmussen, Jim; Olesen, Jørgen E..
N availability is one of the main factors limiting productivity in organic arable systems. Legume-based catch crops (CC) were shown to both increase N yield and reduce N leaching at the crop rotation scale, but strategies to stabilize their growth are required (De Notaris et al., 2018). The present study showed that early CC sowing time and an increased main crop row space can help stabilize CC growth and increase N accumulation, especially when the conditions for the CC are not favorable. Despite the variations in N accumulated in CC biomass, legume-based catch crops represent a valuable source of N for the subsequent crop, with their fertilizer value being less variable than the N accumulated in CC biomass.

Får økologiske forbrugere oftere 6 om dagen? Organic Eprints
Denver, Sigrid; Christensen, Tove; Krarup, Signe.
Får økologiske forbrugere oftere 6 om dagen? Ja!

Organic Agriculture Movement at a Crossroad: a Comparative Study of Denmark and Japan Organic Eprints
Fomsgaard, Saki Ichihara.
Along with apparent institutionalisation of organic agriculture that took place in the last couple of decades, the role of organic agriculture organisations as a social movement actor has increasingly being put into question. Under this circumstance, there can be observed an evidence of “division” among these organisations at being foe or ally to this trend of institutionalisation. Why have such competing trajectories existed in this social movement field? And how have different trajectories evolved throughout the time? Through a comparative study of two organisations related to organic agriculture in Denmark and Japan, it argues that a cause of the discrepancy can be found in fundamentally different formulations of the concepts of organic agriculture...

Institutionalisation of Social Movements: A Comparative Perspective on Organic Agriculture Organisations in Denmark and Japan Organic Eprints
Fomsgaard, Saki Ichihara.
This study deals with competing strategic orientations of the organic agriculture movement toward institutionalisation: a division in whether organic agriculture should develop within the prevailing system (pro-institutional strategy) or preserve its alternativeness compared to conventional agriculture (anti-institutional strategy). It aims to investigate development and reasons of the specific strategies and evaluate their impact on the organic agriculture movement as a social movement. This aim is pursued by a comparative study of the leading organic agriculture organisations in Denmark and Japan: The former as a typical pro-institutional case and the latter as an anti-institutional case. The inquiry overall takes an integrative framework based on...

Nature Management and livelihood strategies on Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
The paper present the first results on a study of landscape elements on Danish organic farms and their management. 346 organic farms representing main landscape and farm types in Denmark and totalling approximately 10% of the organic farming population has been interviewed on the existence and age of hedgerows, ponds and wildlife habitats, as well as permanent grassland managment on the farm. Moreover information on socio-economic aspects has been collected and land use and size of farm has been retrived from registry. Results show that the three landscape elements has to be analysed separately as their relationship to farms characteristics vary. Permanent grassland and hedgerows are related to production parameters like farm type. Farm size is...

Hvordan udvikler det økologiske jordbrug sig regionalt? Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.

Spatial variation in the localization of Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Conversion to organic farming shows a large variation at the county level in Denmark. This is attributed to proximity to urban markets and values, regional specialization of farm types and municipal promotion of organic farming. However, also at the local level there is a substantial variation in the localization of organic farms. This may be related to negative influences of social barriers and positive influences of fiery souls among producers and advisors.
