Animal Health and Welfare during transition to organic dairy production: problems, priorities and perspectives Organic Eprints
Vaarst, M.; Alban, L.; Mogensen, L; Thamsborg, S.M.; Kristensen, E.S..
During the past few years, organic dairy farming has grown dramatically in Denmark. Consequently, an increasing number of people are encountering this method of production for the first time. Amongst these, many veterinarians have suddenly had to deal with organic herds in their home district, and, meeting examples of poor animal welfare, they have recently started to express some concerns. Against this background, a so-called “Synthesis of Knowledge” project was initiated to examine the health and welfare of dairy cattle and the use of medication in the transition to organic production. The aim of the project was to investigate associated problems from the point of view of the dairy herd. Based on qualitative research interviews with vets and...

Information Based Estimators for the Non-Stationary Transition Probability Matrix: An Application to the Danish Pork Industry AgEcon
Karantininis, Kostas.
A generalised cross entropy instrumental variables estimator is used to recover the non-stationary transition probability matrix for the Danish pork industry. A technique is also developed to recover missing data points due to category re-specifications. The impact of a set of exogenous variables (prices of pork meat, inputs, and pork substitutes), are evaluated in the form of elasticities. An overall assessment of entry exit and growth of farms is performed.

A new preparatory approach of decapod and thoracican crustaceans from the Middle Danian at Fakse, Denmark Naturalis
Jakobsen, Sten Lennart.
Many papers on the taxonomy of fossil crustaceans are often based upon poorly preserved material and/or specimens that have been insufficiently prepared. The purpose of the present note is to outline some preparation methods that are applied in our (J.S.H. Collins and S.L.J.) ongoing studies of anomuran and brachyuran decapods from the Middle Danian limestones at Fakse quarry (Denmark), which have greatly enhanced the quality of our material. The techniques briefly outlined here involve: 1 – staining method; 2 – water blasting (as a cleaning tool in preparation of fossils); and 3 – negative preparation (with acid). Some of these techniques will have wide applications in other fields of paleontological research.

Hansen, Martin N.; Mortensen, Henrik S.; Sørensen, Karsten.

Palaeontological collections at the Geological Museum, University of Copenhagen: from Cabinet of Curiosities to databases Naturalis
Harper, D.A.T..
Geological collections were established in the University of Copenhagen during the early 1700s with the presentation of fossil, mineral and rock collections by Count A.G. Moltke, mainly assembled by Ole Worm (1588-1654) in his Museum Wormianum. Currently the palaeontological collections in the Geological Museum, alone, contain over 1 million specimens, including 26,000 types. The focus of the collection remains on material from Denmark and Greenland. Highlights from Greenland include evidence of early life from the Archaean Isua Complex, the early Cambrian Sirius Passet fauna, Devonian amphibians, Triassic dinosaurs, mammals and pterosaurs, Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites together with Jurassic and Cretaceous plants. The Danish collections are dominated...

Modernitet, tid, rum og økologiske fødevarenetværk Organic Eprints
Kjeldsen, Chris.
The title of the project is ”Modernity, time, space and organic food networks”. The empirical basis for the project is case-studies of four different alternative organic food networks. A fundamental assumption behind the project is that modernity causes disembedding, meaning functional differentiation and distanciation of food networks in time and space, which has potentially negative consequences socially as well as ecologically. The theme of the project can thus be summed up as four questions, which will be adressed in the thesis: 1.Does disembedding take place in alternative organic food networks? 2.If it does, how does disembedding take place? 3.Given that disembedding takes place, what are the driving forces? 4.Regardless if disembedding takes...

Effect of starch level and roughage intake on animal perfomance, rumen wall characteristics and liver abscesses in intensively fed Frisian bulls Organic Eprints
Jorgensen, K.F.; Larsen, S.B.; Andersen, H.R.; Vestergaard, M..
Organic dairy cows in Denmark has a higher frequency of liver abscesses, which is probably due to higher starch levels in the feed rations to high yielding cows compaired to conventional cows. Following abstract is based on experiments on young bulls and demonstrates whether replacing high-starch feeds with low-starch feed, such as dried grass pellets and sugar beet pulp, can reduce the problems with liver abscessation without reducing the performance level. The low-starch feed would be relevant to organic dairy production. In total, 41 Danish Friesian bulls (154±20 kg LW) were allocated into four treatment groups in a 2x2 factorial design fed either a high starch (N) or a high fibrous concentrate (F) and either chopped barley straw (S) or a mixture of...

Nature Management and livelihood strategies on Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
The paper present the first results on a study of landscape elements on Danish organic farms and their management. 346 organic farms representing main landscape and farm types in Denmark and totalling approximately 10% of the organic farming population has been interviewed on the existence and age of hedgerows, ponds and wildlife habitats, as well as permanent grassland managment on the farm. Moreover information on socio-economic aspects has been collected and land use and size of farm has been retrived from registry. Results show that the three landscape elements has to be analysed separately as their relationship to farms characteristics vary. Permanent grassland and hedgerows are related to production parameters like farm type. Farm size is...

Effect of repeated hoeing on growth of Cirsium arvense Organic Eprints
Graglia, Enrico; Melander, Bo; Grøndal, Henrik; Jensen, Rikke K..
Infestation with Cirsium arvense in organic cropping is an increasing problem in many parts of Europe. In the present study, repeated hoeing during the first part of the growing season is suggested as a mechanical control strategy, aiming at diminishing the regenerative capacity of C. arvense. Results showed a linear relationship between the number of hoeing passes and the aboveground biomass of C. arvense in the subsequent year. However, the strong effect on the biomass of C. arvense was not followed by an increased crop yield. A low initial density of C. arvense, which did not cause any measurable yield loss, most likely explains this

Hvordan udvikler det økologiske jordbrug sig regionalt? Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.

Kjeldsen, A.M.; Jørgensen, K.F.; Mortensen, B.Ø.; Steffensen, M.; Pedersen, S.S..

Spatial variation in the localization of Danish organic farms Organic Eprints
Frederiksen, Pia; Langer, Vibeke.
Conversion to organic farming shows a large variation at the county level in Denmark. This is attributed to proximity to urban markets and values, regional specialization of farm types and municipal promotion of organic farming. However, also at the local level there is a substantial variation in the localization of organic farms. This may be related to negative influences of social barriers and positive influences of fiery souls among producers and advisors.

Landscape and nature quality in the development and profiling of organic farming Organic Eprints
Hansen, L.; Noe, E.; Højring, K..
Organic agriculture has potential for making a special contribution towards nature and landscape and the farmer plays an important part as decision maker. A qualitative interview study show that the farmer's production strategy often has an inpact on how he acts in relation to nature. At the same time it is difficult for the individual farmer to express concrete expectations of nature quality.

Jorgensen, K.F.; Kjeldsen, A.M.; Strudsholm, F..
