Cell proliferation markers in the transplanted canine transmissible venereal tumor Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Santos,F.G.A.; Moro,L.; Cassali,G.D.; Paixão,T.A.; Campos,P.P.; Silva,S.S.; Vasconcelos,A.C..
Adult male mongrel dogs were subcutaneously transplanted with the canine transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) on the hypogastric region. Twelve specimens of tumors were collected, half during the proliferative phase and the other half during the regressive phase. Fragments of the tumor were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and routinely processed for light microscopy. Sections of 4µm were stained by Schorr or AgNOR or either immunostained for MIB1 (Ki67). Schorr stain, AgNOR and MIB1 showed an increased proliferative activity through mitotic index, nuclear argyrophilic protein stain and cycling tumoral cells in the growing tumors, respectively. All of the three cell proliferation markers were able to distinguish the TVT in both evolution phases. MIB1...

Challenges in the diagnostic of canine visceral leishmaniasis: case report MV&Z
Claudia Scatolim de Almeida, Ana; Ingrid Macente, Beatrice; Aparecida de Souza Marques, Bruna; Cássia de Souza Poletto, Bruna; de Cássia Caris Fantin, Maísa; Falkini Dias, Rafaela; Ribeiro Latorre, Renata.
Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the protozoa of the mononuclear phagocyte system, having dogs as its main urban host. Clinical diagnosis is difficult to perform because of the diversity of clinical signs and the occurrence of asymptomatic cases. Thus, the disease is confirmed by employing laboratory methods. This study reports a case of canine visceral leishmaniasis in which the patient presented several clinical signs, and the veterinarian’s knowledge about the disease was necessary to establish the correct diagnosis.

Pinto,A.C.B.C. Fonseca; Villamizar,L.A.; Ghirelli,C.O.; Silva,T.R.C.; Baroni,C.O.; Banon,G.P.R.; Guerra,J.M.; Amaral,C.T.; Torres,L.N..
Among the tumors affecting the choroid plexus in dogs, the papilloma ranks second place in incidence after cell carcinoma tumors. Presumptive diagnosis can be made through imaging methods, such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance images. Definitive diagnosis of plexus choroid tumor is based on histopathological findings. This report presented the tomographic features of the brain in a 6-year-old intact female Rottweiler with choroid plexus papilloma. The computed tomography showed right lateral ventricle enlargement, midline deviation and an enhanced mass into the postcontrast phase. At necropsy, a mass on the floor of the right lateral ventricle was observed, associated with important ventricle dilatation. The histopathological analysis...

Bicalho,A.L.; Silva,A.P.C.; Paixão,T.A.; Cardoso Jr.,R.B.; Santos,R.L..
Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a rare disorder that affects gastrointestinal propulsion. It may be secondary to several pathological conditions or it may develop without a known cause. A 1.2 year-old intact Pug bitch had a history of vomiting and constipation, which were followed by diarrhea and distended abdomen. Hypomotility and dilation of the small intestine, which was filled with gas, were observed during laparotomy. Histologically, full thickness biopsy specimens demonstrated a severe loss and degeneration of leiomyocytes in the inner and outer muscular layers of the intestinal wall, whereas there was a marked hypertrophy and hyperplasia of smooth muscle cells in the lamina propria, and extremely thickened muscularis mucosae arranged in bundles...

Teixeira,N.C.T.; Bicalho,A.P.C.V.; Vasconcelos,A.V.; Horta,R.S.; Cunha,R.M.C.; Lavalle,G.E..
ABSTRACT Metronomic chemotherapy consists of an anticancer modality treatment. It is applicable in patients at an advanced stage, with the objective of increasing overall survival. The aim of this study was to report an anal sac apocrine carcinoma case in a dog with lymph node metastasis treated with metronomic chemotherapy sequential to surgery and conventional chemotherapy using gemcitabine and carboplatin. Metronomic chemotherapy was associated with cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors, due to strong tumor COX-2 immunohistochemistry expression. Metronomic chemotherapy was initiated with cyclophosphamide, but it was replaced by lomustine, also in metronomic dosage, due to adverse effects. Treatment showed effectiveness, since the patient's overall...

Clinical and pathological aspects of multicentric hemangiosarcoma in a Pinscher dog Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Martins,B.D.C.; Torres,B.B.J.; Rodriguez,A.A.M.; Gamba,C.O.; Cassali,G.D.; Lavalle,G.E.; Martins,G.D.C.; Melo,E.G..
A 3-year-old female Pinscher dog was presented with a history of lameness and pain in hind limbs for one week which acutely progressed to non-ambulatory paraparesis. The dog had been apathetic and anorexic during the six days prior to presentation. The neurological findings were compatible with upper motor neuron signs to the left hind limb due to a spinal cord compressive mass on the twelfth thoracic vertebral body. On the other hand, signs of lower motor neurons to the right hind limb were due to a mass with a pathological fracture in the right proximal femur, compressing the sciatic nerve. A histopathological analysis of all organs revealedthe proliferation of endothelial cells showingin filtrative growth and organization into vascular structures with a...

Comparative Morphometry of the Olfactory Bulb, Tract and Stria in the Human, Dog and Goat International Journal of Morphology
Kavoi,Boniface M; Jameela,Hassanali.
Morphometric parameters of olfactory brain components show species-dependent variations. However, the association of these parameters with olfactory function vis-à-vis ecological and evolutionary behaviors is poorly understood. In this study, a morphometric analysis of the olfactory bulb, tract and stria was carried out in three ecologically diverse animals comprising humans (primate), dogs (carnivore) and goats (herbivore) to elucidate differences in morphometry in relation to olfactory function. Using formalin-fixed brains, volumes and linear measurements of the olfactory structures were determined and correlated with those of cerebrum and the whole brain. The volume of the olfactory bulb was greatest in dogs, followed by goats and humans and constituted...
