Evaluation of central vestibular syndrome in dogs using brainstem auditory evoked responses recorded with surface electrodes Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Stanciu,G.D; Musteață,M.; Armașu,M.; Solcan,G..
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to analyse the wave morphology, amplitude, latency, and intervals of the brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAERs) in dogs with central vestibular syndrome (CVS) recorded with surface electrodes. Ten dogs with CVS were examined by mono- and binaural stimulation, using the Neuropack electrodiagnostic system, with stimulus intensities of 90 dBSPL. BAERs examinations revealed morphological changes of waves I, II, III, and V and decreased amplitudes of all waves in 7/10 dogs. P values obtained were = 0.014 for wave I amplitude, 0.031 for II, and III and 0.032 for V. Comparing the latencies of waves I, II, III, and V generated by right and left monoaural stimulation in dogs with CVS, we did not observe significant differences...

Evaluation of the chemical composition of dry dogfoods commercialized in Chile used for growing dogs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Alvarado,C.A.; Hodgkinson,S.M.; Alomar,D.; Boroschek,D..
The nutritional quality of dry dogfood commercialized in Chile for growing dogs was studied. Samples from at least three different batches of 26 dogfood brands were mixed. The resultant samples (n=26) were chemically analyzed to determine their concentrations of dry matter (DM), gross energy, fiber, ash, crude protein, essential amino acids, total fat, linoleic acid and minerals. The metabolizable energy (ME) content of each sample was estimated using modified atwater factors. The results from the chemical analyses were compared with the nutrient profiles published by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). Dogfoods that were found to contain an estimated ME of over 4,000kcal/kg DM were corrected for their high energy density before...

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis that has been the subject of study in Brazil and worldwide. The dogs are sentinels for the infection and can carry Toxoplasma gondii in the environment. Seroepidemiological surveys of these animals are an important tool in the surveillance and control of the disease and inform decision-making in health programs. In this study the performance of the Modified Agglutination Test (MAT) in the serodiagnosis of canine toxoplasmosis is evaluated and compared to the indirect immunofluorescent-antibody test (IFAT). A sample of 157 dog sera from the county of Monte Negro, Rondônia, with 76.40% positive reactions for Toxoplasma gondii (IFAT =16) was analyzed using the MAT (=25), presenting sensitivity of 85.00% (Confidence Interval 95.00%:...

Evaluation of tumor markers carcinoembryonic antigen, cytokeratin 19 fragment and cancer-associated antigen 72-4 in neoplastic and non-neoplastic canine effusions differentiation Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Teixeira,L.V.; Guerra,T.A.; Conrado,F.O.; Terra,S.R.; Gerardi,D.G.; González,F.H.D..
The concentration of tumor markers in body fluids can be used for diagnosis and prognosis of patients. This study aimed to investigate the performance of tumor markers cytokeratin 19 fragment (CYFRA 21-1), cancer-associated antigen 72-4 (CA 72-4) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in the neoplastic and non-neoplastic canine effusions. In thirty-two neoplastic (n=16) and non-neoplastic (n=16) samples of canine thoracic or abdominal effusions, tumor markers were measured. Significant statistical difference was found only for the CYFRA 21-1 marker. The levels were significantly higher for the neoplastic group. The lack of significance between groups for markers CA 72-4 and CEA can be explained by the presence of other diseases in the non-neoplastic group,...

Excision of sclerocorneal limbus in dogs and resulting clinical events: study of an experimental model Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Brunelli,A.T.J.; Vicenti,F.A.M.; Oriá,A.; Campos,C.F.; Doria Neto,F.A.; Laus,J.L..
The consequences of complete removal of the sclerocorneal limbus epithelium were evaluated, as well as the model for such, in which n-heptanol and superficial keratectomy were used. The association of n-heptanol and keratectomy allowed a complete excision of stem cells. Moreover, the destruction of these cells led to significant tectonic alterations that could be employed as a feasible model for clinical experimentation of corneal transplantation.

Fungal pyogranulomatous encephalitis in a dog with leishmaniosis Ciência Rural
Machado,Gisele Fabrino; Vasconcelos,Rosemeri de Oliveira; Luvizotto,Maria Cecília Rui; Cândido,Terezinha Cristina.
A case of pyogranulomatous micotic encephalitis in a one-year old, female, Fila Brasileiro dog is reported. Gross examination of the cerebrum revealed a softened haemorrhagic area in the right frontal cortex and on the cut surface of the left hemisphere, which affected the white matter and deep cortical areas. The diagnosis of multifocal mycotic pyogranulomatous encephalitis was obtained by the histopathological examination, which showed the presence of macrophages, giant cells, haemorrhage and brownish septate hyphae diffusely distributed within the tissue and invading vessel lumina. Identification of amastigotes forms in popliteus lymphonode imprint confirmed infection by Leishmania sp. Mycotic infection in the brain of this dog was related to a...

Gene and protein expression of a soluble form of CTLA-4 in a healthy dog OAK
Tagawa, Michihito; Yamamoto, Yuhei; Shimbo, Genya; Iguchi, Aiko; Xuan, Xuenan; Tomihari, Mizuki; Miyahara, Kazuro.
Cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated gene-4 (CTLA-4) is a costimulatory molecule, expressed on the surface of activated T cells that negatively regulates T cell activation. In humans, alternative splicing of the CTLA-4 gene generates two major isoforms of mRNA, and a soluble form of CTLA-4 (sCTLA-4) was detected in normal human serum. We describe alternatively spliced mRNA expressed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from a healthy dog lacking the transmembrane domain coded by exon 3 of the CTLA-4 gene. Immunoprecipitation and western blotting of dog serum revealed a band of approximately 23-kDa, which is consistent with the predicted size, based on the amino acid sequence of the canine sCTLA-4 obtained in this study.
