Identification of Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi isolated from healthy skin of symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs seropositive for leishmaniasis in the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJID
Madeira,Maria de Fátima; Schubach,Armando de Oliveira; Schubach,Tânia Maria Pacheco; Leal,Cristianni Antunes; Marzochi,Mauro Célio de Almeida.
Euthanasia of seropositive dogs has been one of the principal measures adopted by the Program for the Control of Leishmaniasis in Brazil for many years. However, its efficacy is currently being questioned. We obtained intact skin samples from 20 Leishmania-reactive dogs from the municipality of Rio de Janeiro that had been referred for euthanasia. The promastigote forms of Leishmania were isolated in culture from 18 of these animals. Fourteen of these isolates were identified as Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi by isoenzyme electrophoresis; seven of these were from asymptomatic dogs and seven were from symptomatic animals with visceral leishmaniasis. In conclusion, cutaneous parasitism is found in the intact skin of dogs naturally infected with L. (L.)...

Immunohistochemical and molecular expression of laminin-332 gamma-2 chain in canine mammary tumors Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Zuccari,D.A.P.C; Castro,R; Jardim,B.V; Mancini,U.M; Polachini,G.M.
Forty-eight cases of canine mammary cancer were investigated to evaluate the immunohistochemical distribution of the γ2 chain of laminin-332. Tumor cells were compared to a pool of normal mammary tissues using quantitative RT-PCR. The western blot was performed in eight tumor samples as complementary test to evaluate protein integrity. Immunohistochemistry experiments showed negative, focal, and weak expression of laminin-332 γ2 in tumors with the worst prognosis. Quantitative PCR revealed downregulation of the gene in 27 (56.2%) of the animals. Out of the 16 dogs with γ2 chain overexpression, seven were still alive. The western blot results showed bands generation of 36, 50, and 98kDa, suggesting degradation of laminin-332 γ2 in malignant tumors. The...

Immunohistochemical expression of B and T-lymphocytes and TGF-β in experimentally transplanted canine venereal tumor Ciência Rural
Silveira,Ana Carolina Trompieri; Gerardi,Daniel; Mouro,Juliana Vitti; Costa,Mirela Tinucci; Alessi,Antonio Carlos.
The tumor/host relationship may have a determining role in the progression or remission of a tumor. Greater infiltration of leukocytes into tumors has been associated with a better prognosis, although controversy regarding whether these cells have a central role in antitumor immunity still exists. Canine transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) is an experimentally transplantable type of tumor that has been used as an experimental model for the tumor/host relationship. The aim of this study was to evaluate the infiltration of T-lymphocytes (CD3, CD4, CD8) and B lymphocytes (CD79-α) and the expression of the cytokine TGF-β in TVT, by means of immunohistochemistry (ABC method). The experimental tumors were composed of puppies that developed TVT after...

Bicalho,K.A.; Ferreira,F.; Borges,L.M.F.; Ribeiro,M.F.B..
The action of five acaricides was evaluated on eggs, larvae, nymphs and adults of the ixodid tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The acaricides tested were: high cis-cypermethrin (0.01%) + DDVP (0.11%), coumaphos (0.05%), deltamethrin (0.0025%), amitraz (0.025%) and cypermethrin (0.015%). Eggs treated with high cis-cypermethrin and cypermethrin showed eclosion inhibitions of 72.1% and 67.3%, respectively, whereas coumaphos was much less effective (only 11.7%). Except for coumaphos, which resulted in 63.3% and 80.0% mortality of nymphs and unfed females, respectively, all compounds tested killed 100% of all tick stages to which they were exposed.

Lima,C.R.O.; Faleiro,M.B.R.; Rabelo,R.E.; Vulcani,V.A.S.; Rubini,M.R.; Torres,F.A.G.; Moura,V.M.B.D..
ABSTRACT The canine transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) affects the external genitalia of dogs by the natural transplant of viable tumor cells. Thus, this research aimed to diagnose and characterize TVT morphological patterns, identify the insertion of the LINE-1 element in C-MYC gene, by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of C-MYC, p53, p21 and p27 proteins. The relationship between C-MYC and p53 proteins and their interference on the expression of p21 and p27 were also studied. For that, 20 samples of naturally occurring TVT were used, subjected to cytopathological, histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis, and to molecular diagnosis of neoplasia. The increased tissue expression and the...

Intraventricular pneumocephalus associated with nasocephalic necrosis in a puppy: a case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Sena,J.O.; Costa,K.C.R.; Costa,P.M.; Miranda,F.G.; Silva,J.F.; Tôrres,R.C.S..
ABSTRACT Pneumocephalus is defined as the presence of air in any of the intracranial compartments. Its most frequent causes are trauma and cranial surgery. Clinical signs occur as a result of increased intracranial pressure and vary with the location and extent of the lesion. A case involving a seven-month-old female Saint Bernard, who suffered cranial trauma caused by a bite to the face at ten days of age and had presented with seizures and localized pain four months previously is reported. A computed tomography scan of the skull revealed a nasocephalic mass with low contrast enhancement, bone lysis, and hypodensity (-940 Hounsfield units) of the lateral and third ventricles, indicating intraventricular pneumocephalus. During surgery, a fragment of the...

Isolation of extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli from diarrheic dogs and their antimicrobial resistance profile BJM
Paula,Cleber Jacob Silva de; Marin,José Moacir.
From January to December 2006, 92 Escherichia coli isolates from 25 diarrheic dogs were analyzed by screening for the presence of adhesin-encoding genes (pap, sfa, afa), hemolysin and aerobactin genes. Virulence gene frequencies detected in those isolates were: 12% pap, 1% sfa, 10% hemolysin and 6.5% aerobactin. Ten isolates were characterized as extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) strains; all showed a multidrug resistance phenotype that may represent a reason for concern due the risk of dissemination of antimicrobial resistant genes to the microbiota of human beings.
