The Carpal Joint of the Donkey (Equus asinus): Morphological Investigation International Journal of Morphology
Alsafy,Mohamed A. M; El-Gendy,Samir A.A; Abou-Ahmed,Howaida M.
The current study has been achieved to be an essential resource for all veterinary practitioners that deal with the anatomy of the carpal joint of the donkey. Ten adult donkeys of both sexes were used in the current study. The topographical approach to the carpal joint was investigated in this study. Radiography and computed tomography (CT) of the carpus delineated the articulations of the carpal joint: radiocarpal, intercarpal, and carpometacarpal. The carpal ligaments were well delineated and the carpal canal was demonstrated with its content such as superficial digital flexor tendon (SDFT) and deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT). The contrast radiography visualized that the radiocarpal joint outpouched proximal to the accessory carpal bone by large...

Experimental Trypanosoma evansi infection in donkeys: hematological, biochemical and histopathological changes Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Cadioli,F.A.; Marques,L.C.; Machado,R.Z.; Alessi,A.C.; Aquino,L.P.C.T.; Barnabé,P A..
Five adult donkeys were experimentally infected with Brazilian strain of Trypanosoma evansi originally isolated from a naturally infected dog to study the hematological biochemical and histopathological alterations during the evolution of the disease. The course of the experimental infection was followed up to 145 days. Hematological analyses of the infected donkeys revealed a marked decline in hemoglobin, packed-cell volume, and erythrocyte count. Anemia was observed after successive peaks of parasitemia. Biochemical analyses showed increased levels of icterus index, serum globulins and decreased serum albumin and glucose values. All infected donkeys revealed enlargement of spleen and its white pulp, enlargement of mediastinal lymph nodes and lungs...

Physical characteristics and fertility of fractionated donkey semen cooled at 5°C Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Carvalho,L.E.; Silva Filho,J.M.; Palhares,M.S.; Sales,A.L.R.; Gonczarowska,A.T.; Oliveira,H.N.; Resende,M.C.; Neves,M.G.; Madison,R.J..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different extenders (Skimmed Milk Glucose - SMG or Lactose - Egg Yolk - LEY) on physical characteristics and fertility of fractionated donkey semen cooled at 5°C. For this, four Pêga donkeys were used as semen donors. The sperm rich fraction of the ejaculate was diluted preparing insemination doses containing 400 x 106 motile spermatozoa in a volume of 22 mL, cooled to 5°C and stored up to 48 hours in a container proposed by Palhares (1997). Sperm motility and vigor were assessed in fresh semen, after first semen dilution, before insemination, at 24 and 48 hours after storage. For the fertility evaluation, 44 mares were inseminated with semen stored for a period between 12 and 24 hours. The...

EQUINE '98, PART IV: REFERENCE OF HEALTH MANAGEMENT FOR HORSES AND HIGHLIGHTED DISEASES, 1998 AgEcon
Garber, Lindsey.
The National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) is sponsored by the USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services (VS). The NAHMS Equine '98 Study was designed to provide information about the nation's equine population for education and research purposes. This report is based on the second phase of Equine '98 data collection done by Federal and State Veterinary Medical Officers (VMO's) and Animal Health Technicians (AHT's) in 28 states. From June 15 through September 11, 1998, horse management and health data were collected on-farm from 1,136 participating operations that had three or more horses present on January 1, 1998. This target population was estimated to represent 51.6 percent of operations with horses in the 28 states and 83.9 percent of horses in the 28...

Gender and live weight on carcass and meat characteristics of donkeys Ciência Rural
Hernández-Briano,Pedro; Ramírez-Lozano,Roque Gonzalo; Carrillo-Muro,Octavio; López-Carlos,Marco Antonio; Méndez-Llorente,Fabiola; Aguilera-Soto,Jairo Iván.
ABSTRACT: One hundred eighty-nine Catalan crossbreed donkeys (Equus africanus asinus) were used to evaluate the effect of gender (gelding, n=106; or female, n=83) and live weight at slaughter (LW) (<100kg, n=25; 101 to 125kg, n=42; 126 to 150kg, n=85; and 151>kg, n=37) on carcass characteristics, non-carcass components and meat and fat color. Geldings had greater (P<0.05) carcass weight, carcass dressing and *L value of subcutaneous fat than females; but females had greater (P<0.05) cooling loss, a* value of semitendinosus muscle and b* value of subcutaneous fat. Donkeys with more than 126kg of LW showed greater (P<0.05) carcass weight and dressing and lower (P<0.05) cooling loss compared to lighter donkeys. The a* value of semitendinosus...

Effect of split ejaculation and seminal extenders on longevity of donkey semen preserved at 5° C Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Mello,S.L.V.; Henry,M.; Souza,M.C.; Oliveira,S.M.P..
The aim of this study was to evaluate the longevity of donkey sperm comparing the rich seminal fraction and the whole semen in two extenders, Kenney and modified Baken extenders. Semen of five donkeys were collected through an open-end artificial vagina once a week for five consecutive weeks. The two first jets (rich fraction) of semen were collected separately from the rest of the ejaculate. Whole semen samples were obtained mixing proportionally part of the rich with part of the poor seminal fractions. Seminal samples were immediately diluted 1:1 in each extender and maintained at room temperature during sperm concentration analysis. Samples were further diluted to rich 50×10(6) sperm per ml, cooled in a refrigerator at the initial rate of -0.6° C/min...

Neuroaxonal Dystrophy in a mule: first case reported Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Toledo,L.F.A.; Jerdy,H.L.; Silva,P.C.A.R.; Carvalho,E.C.Q.; Lessa,D.A.B..
ABSTRACT A 12-month-old mule (sterile hybrid equine species) presented unspecific neurological changes (symmetric ataxia, dysmetria, conscious proprioceptive deficit and weakness). Due to poor prognosis and to the fact that a sibling from the previous generation exhibited similar clinical signs that were not definitively diagnosed, the animal was euthanized. Diagnosis of neuroaxonal dystrophy was confirmed by anatomohistopathological analysis. This is the first clinical case of neuronal dystrophy in a mule reported in the world. The clinical and histopathological characteristics of this disease were very similar to those reported for several equine breeds. Therefore, the disease should also be considered in the diagnosis of neurological conditions in mules...

A Morphometric Study on the Skull of Donkey (Equus asinus) International Journal of Morphology
Zhu,Lei; Shi,XiaoDong; Wang,JunJie; Chen,JianGang.
The present study was carried out on a number of 16 skulls of adult male domestic donkeys. Craniometric measurements for 40 different parts of the skulls were made. All investigated features were expressed as Mean±SD. Cephalic indices and ratios were calculated by using the investigated features. The craniometric measurements and cephalic indices had been compared with those of local horses and ponies. A skull length of 443.07±53.57 mm and a maximum zygomatic width of 169.09±17.64 mm were obtained. The size of donkey skull was between those of local horses and ponies. A skull index of 38.23±0.85, a cranial index of 45.01±2.83 and a facial index of 67.80±3.79 were obtained. Cranial index and skull index were found to be close in value to that of local...
