The environmental effect and fate of several agricultural and industrial source toxicants were evaluated in controlled laboratory microcosm systems in the presence of the aminopolysaccharide polymer, chitin. Toxicants examined included methyl parathion, phenol, pentachlorophenol, 2,4 dichlorophenol, 1,2 dichloroethane and Kepone. Microcosm operating parameters, including pH/Eh, salinity, temperature, flow rate and sediment/water interface conditions, were based on comparable in situ measurements. Fate analysis predictions were based on mineralization of the parent toxicant compound as measured by chromatographic analysis or super(14)CO sub(2) expiration. Chitin, amended to continuous flow microcosms, promoted either cometabolic or cooxidative... |

When considering zooplankton feeding as one of the pathways involved in the transfer of substances in marine ecosystems, it is important to study the composition and size distribution of the seston: firstly, the elements in which one is interested may be associated with different types and sizes of particles; secondly, particle size and composition are important factors in relation t o the feeding process of the zooplankton itself. High speed cinematographic studies have recently revealed that copepods use two different mechanisms for feeding. Small particles (< 12 pm) are collected by continuous low amplitude movements of the second maxillae and combing of the appendages. Larger particles are detected and collected individually by means of a specific... |

Growth of molluscs raised in coastal zones, where the water exchange rate is low, appears to be limited, once a certain biomass level is attained, by the availability of food, making it necessary to determine as accurately as possible the trophic capacity of an ecosystem. This paper analyses the various sources of food for molluscs. It would appear that dissolved organic substances play a major role, providing up to half the energy necessary for their metabolism. Particulate material is filtered by molluscs in proportion to their size, with optimum filtration rates varying with species. The negative effect on meat production of high mineraI seston rates is demonstrated, and an analysis provided of the respective role of each component of organic matter.... |
