In Thau Iagoon (Mediterranean Sea), shellfish are cultured in suspension. Molluscs are reared on ropes that are suspended on frames. Principal species concerned by breeding are Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus galloprovincialis and, in a less extent, Ostrea edulis. A new sampling method was developped to assess the total stock of cultured shellfish and was tested in July 1998 and April 1999. The total stock was found to be 19500 tons (± 1120 SE) in 1998 and 14100 tons (± 830 SE) in 1999, thus exhibiting temporal variations. Temporal differences in the total stock are mainly attributable to the breeding cycle but also to sorne exceptionnal events which occurred in Thau lageon in 1997 and 1998 (water anoxia, bacteriological crisis, bloom of toxic algae). In the... |

A bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium tamarense was observed for the first time in Thau iagoon between November and December 1998. Maximum cell concentrations detected in shellfish farming areas (85 000 Cells/1) were high enough to make mussels and clams unsuitable for human consumption (max. 850 ug. STX eq.100 g'1) while toxic levels in oysters did not exceed, or even reach, the international public health threshold established for PSP toxins. This event, new to French Mediterranean waters, was investigated by both local and national veterinary services and by the Ifremer teams involved in the National Monitoring Network for Phytoplankton and Phycotoxines (Réphy). The chronological and operational description of the event was compared with data... |

Thau is a mediterranean lagoon with a large productive stock of molluscs (oysters, mussels) cultivated on suspended tines and colonised by epibionta (ascidia and others invertebrates, algae, etc ... ). This study was developed as part of the PNOC-OXYTHAU.programme. Its aim was to analyze the effects of oyster farrning on water-mass surrounding structures loaded with suspended molluscs and proximal watermass separating these structures. This study concems particulate suspended matter and deposits of particulate organic matter on the bottom after sedimnentation. Biochemical measurements were carried out for nitrogen, carbon, proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. ln order to estimate sedimentaton, bottom sediment traps were used |

Microbes regularly contaminate Thau lagoon shellfish. Between 1997 and 2007, 18% of the analyses carried out in dry weather recorded more than 230 Escherichia coli / 100 g of bivalves (Ifremer French microbial monitoring network), leading the administration to restrict the shellfish harvest area, including suspension of production. This study aims to determine, the contribution of seabirds, which roost at night on the Thau lagoon shellfish growing frames, to shellfish faecal pollution in dry weather. Data were collected in 2008 from both the drainage area (pollution input) and the lagoon (water quality and microbial monitoring, seabird counts) in dry weather. The data showed that, with no watershed input or lagoon resurgence, microbial contaminants were... |
