Finishing store lambs from organic hill and upland farms OF0119 Organic Eprints
Elliot, Mr J; Keatinge, Mr R; Powell, Mr L; Unwin, Mr R.
1. The aim of this study was to assess the economics and constraints associated with home finishing lambs on a range of organic hill and upland farms in England and Wales, and to evaluate the potential for further finishing on registered farms in the lowlands. 2. The current state of the organic sheep sector is briefly reviewed. This identifies problems of scale, limited premia and uneveness of supply as limiting factors to more rapid development of the market and associated production systems. 3. To quanitfy the effect of organic management on financial performance, hill and upland farms were classified under four typical systems, depending on the degree of intensification. 4. Without a sizeable area of improved ground, to which fertiliser...

Organic beef and sheep production in the uplands OF0111 Organic Eprints
Keatinge, Mr Ray.
The overall objective of the organic project at ADAS Redesdale is to evaluate the physical and financial implicattions of converting a hill and upland unit to an organic farming system. Conversion of 400 hectares, 600 breeding ewes (in 3 flocks) and 5 suckler cows was completed in 1993. The current evaluation (1995-1998) took place under full organic production. The assessmet is based on comparing organic and conventioanl farming systems, supported by data collected from commercial organic farms linked to the main project, and a number of replicated experiments. Grassland management on the Unit integrates three distinct types of grazing; inbye fields (3%), improved hill (17%) and unimproved native hill (80%) for sheep and cattle production. Native...

Organic Agriculture in Denmark - Economic Implications of a Widespread Change Organic Eprints
Wynen, Els.
To assess the effects of a hypothetical widespread adoption of organic practices in Denmark, a four-region, partial equilibrium model of the Danish agricultural sector, the Danish Organic Agriculture Project (DOAP), was constructed for the Danish Institute of Agricultural and Fisheries Economics (SJFI). DOAP contains 3 farm sectors, crops, dairy and pigs, and permits farmers to have up to 16 cropping activities. Detailed costs of production are modelled in each sector and region. DOAP contains two production structures, one conventional and one organic, currently representing less than 2 per cent of Danish farms. By exogenously specifying the number of farms using each method of production, the impact of a switch to organic methods on national outputs and...

Ekoproduktionens utvecklingsalternativ bör begrundas Organic Eprints
Vehkasalo, Ville.

Regulatory and policy instruments to protect European waters from agricultural activities: status of their implementation Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko.
This is report of a study involving nine European countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Hungary, Netherlands, Romania and Slovenia), as well as several regional (international) programmes, such as EU, Baltic Sea, Danube River Basin and the Black Sea programmes. The information needed to analyse the existing national and international policies and their implementation was obtained through a survey using a specially developed questionnaire. The answers were provided by a number of high governmental officials from the ministries of agriculture, environment and/or water management of the reviewed countries and the respected international organisations. The survey was complemented with information collected through a literature...

Economics of organic fruit production (OF0151) Organic Eprints
Firth, Chris; Lennartsson, Margi.
This is the final report of Defra project OF0151 Despite a very strong consumer demand for organic fruit, it is the least developed sector of the UK organic industry. The main constraint to growth in supply is the lack of organic fruit growers, especially those on a large enough scale to supply the wholesale, multiple and processing markets. The UK Organic Fruit Focus Group was set up in 1997 as a producer initiative to develop the market and production of UK organic fruit. At the first meeting of the group it was concluded that a) the absence of written technical information on how to grow organic fruit b) the lack of experienced advisors c) the lack of fruit and d) a lack of information on the economics of organic fruit were major barriers to grower...

Zukunftsmodell Schweiz - eine Landwirtschaft ohne Gentechnik? Organic Eprints
Brunner, Thomas; Nowack, Karin; Tamm, Lucius; Tappeser, Beatrix; Eckelkamp, Claudia; Weber, Barbara; Köchlin, Florianne; Vogel, Benno.
Denn Gentech-food ist out, in ganz Europa.

Waibel, Hermann; Zander, Katrin (Hrsg.).

Organic farming in the uplands – appraisal of a development programme Organic Eprints
Frost, David.
There is a widespread assumption that conversion of livestock production systems in the uplands can be achieved with minimal change to existing hill farming practices and yet still deliver environmental and financial benefits. This assumption needs to be examined because conversion of upland farm enterprises poses particular issues for organic farming, Frost (1999). The certifying bodies acknowledge that some of these issues are not adequately covered by the current standards for organic agriculture. The development of a hill farming organic system at Pwllpeiran was established to provide evidence for such an appraisal, Powell (1999). Appraisal of the project indicates that organic beef and sheep production can be a viable option in the uplands. Long...

Policy instruments on water protection of the selected European countries in relation to organic agriculture Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko.
Introduction Most agricultural operations, such as soil tillage, manuring, grazing, and irrigation, pose a serious threat to water quality. Agriculture is a heavy water user and a serious water polluter (nutrients, pesticides, salts, pathogens, heavy metals, oxygen-depleting and radioactive substances, etc.). In addition, agriculture threatens water habitats. The UN “Convention for the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes” ratified at Helsinki in 1992 obliges the signatory countries to further prevent, control and reduce water pollution from point and non-point sources. The implementation of the Convention is co-ordinated by the UN Economic Commission for Europe. In October 1999, this organisation commissioned a study...

Organic Farming in Europe by 2010: Scenarios for the future Organic Eprints
Zanoli, R.; Gambelli, D.; Vairo, D..
How will organic farming in Europe evolve by the year 2010? The answer provides a basis for the development of different policy options and for anticipating the future relative competitiveness of organic and conventional farming. The authors tackle the question using an innovative approach based on scenario analysis, offering the reader a range of scenarios that encompass the main possible evolutions of the organic farming sector. This book constitutes an innovative and reliable decision-supporting tool for policy makers, farmers and the private sector. Researchers and students operating in the field of agricultural economics will also benefit from the methodological approach adopted for the scenario analysis.

Organic farm incomes in England and Wales 1995/96 - 1997/98 Organic Eprints
Fowler, Susan; Lampkin, Nicolas; Midmore, Peter.
This report is associated with the less detailed final report of Defra project OF0190, on the same theme, archived at http://orgprints.org/6606 This report presents results from research work carried out for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) on the financial performance of organic farms over the years 1995/96 to 1997/98. The aim of the research was to assess the financial performance of organic farms differentiated by farm type, in order to inform MAFF policy-making with respect to organic farming, and to provide a basis for assessments by farmers, advisers and other interested parties of the farm-level implications of conversion to, and continued organic farming. The specific objectives were the provision of information on different...

Environmental impact and macro-economic feasibility of organic agriculture in the Danube River Basin Organic Eprints
Znaor, Darko; Kieft, Henk.
Several studies from the mid-nineties pointed to agriculture as the single biggest nutrient polluter of the surface water in the Danube River Basin (Haskoning, 1994). Following these findings, the EU Phare programme awarded in 1995 a four-year education and research project aimed at introducing and assessing feasibility of organic agriculture in three Danube River countries: Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania. So far it is the biggest and most elaborate project on organic agriculture ever implemented in these three countries. The project consisted of a spectrum of training, on-farm demonstration and research/study activities, and prepared strategy papers for policy redesigning. The studies and research performed assessed the impact of organic agriculture on (i)...
