Hematological profile of beef cattle with divergent residual feed intake, following feed deprivation PAB
Gomes,Rodrigo da Costa; Siqueira,Renata Farinelli de; Ballou,Michael Alan; Stella,Tiago Roberto; Leme,Paulo Roberto.
The objective of this work was to characterize the hematological profiles of steers and bulls, according to residual feed intake (RFI), after feed deprivation. Twenty‑month‑old Nellore steers and bulls were fed feedlot diets for 70 and 56 days, respectively. RFI was calculated as the difference between actual feed intake and expected feed intake. More and less efficient steers and bulls, according to RFI, were subjected to 24 hours of food deprivation. Blood was sampled prior to and following the withdrawal period. Hematological analyses included total and differential white blood cell count, red blood cell count and morphology, and plasma glucose concentration. Variation in RFI did not influence plasma glucose concentration or blood cell profiles. Glucose...

Improving feed efficiency in fish using selective breeding: a review ArchiMer
De Verdal, Hugues; Komen, Hans; Quillet, Edwige; Chatain, Beatrice; Allal, Francois; Benzie, John A. H.; Vandeputte, Marc.
Improving feed efficiency (FE) is key to reducing production costs in aquaculture and to achieving sustainability for the aquaculture industry. Feed costs account for 30–70% of total production costs in aquaculture; much work has been done on nutritional and husbandry approaches to improve FE but only a limited amount of research has been devoted to using genetics, despite its potential. This paper reviews past work to improve FE in fish using selective breeding and assess future directions. Direct selection on FE traits requires methods to measure individual feed consumption and estimate FE efficiently and accurately. This is particularly difficult to do in fish because of the environment in which they live. Many of the published studies on FE were found...

In search for indirect criteria to improve feed utilization efficiency in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Part II: Heritability of weight loss during feed deprivation and weight gain during re-feeding periods ArchiMer
Grima, Laure; Chatain, Beatrice; Ruelle, Francois; Vergnet, Alain; Launay, Amandine; Mambrini, Muriel; Vandeputte, Marc.
Selective breeding to improve residual feed intake (RFI) in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is a major goal that would optimize economic gain while minimizing the environmental impact of production. Due to the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake, no selective breeding program has yet been started. In a previous study, we identified a criterion phenotypically related to RFI variations: the loss of weight during feed deprivation, FD. Moreover, an additional composite criterion (CC) integrating both FD and weight gain during subsequent re-feeding (RF) was closely related to RFI, even though the relationship was only close to significance (P=0.06). The aim of the present study was to estimate the heritability of these two traits, in order...

In search for indirect criteria to improve residual feed intake in sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) Part I: Phenotypic relationship between residual feed intake and body weight variations during feed deprivation and re-feeding periods ArchiMer
Grima, Laure; Vandeputte, Marc; Ruelle, Francois; Vergnet, Alain; Mambrini, Muriel; Chatain, Beatrice.
No commercial breeding programs have yet started to improve feed utilization efficiency in fish, mainly because of the difficulty in accurately measuring individual feed intake in fish reared in groups. Our general goal is to propose indirect criteria to be used for breeding of commercial lines. In a previous study undertaken with rainbow trout clones, a genetic correlation was detected between residual feed intake (RFI), and body weight variation during successive periods of feed deprivation (FD) and re-feeding (RF). To assess the pertinence of such indirect criteria for future breeding programs, we set up a large experiment using sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax), a recently domesticated species with broad genetic diversity. The objectives of the present...

International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 30. Bio-economic evaluation of the nutritional value for carp (<i>Cyprinus carpio</i> L.) larvae of nine <i>Artemia</i> strains OMA
Vanhaecke, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The nutritional value of fresh hatched nauplii from nine geographical strains of brine shrimp, <i>Artemia</i> , was determined for larvae of the carp (<i>Cyprinus carpio</i>). After 2 weeks of culture, the survival of carp larvae was over 90% and no significant differences in survival among treatments were detected. The growth rate of the larvae, however, was a function of the <i>Artemia</i> strain used. The highest weight gains were recorded with parthenogenetic <i>Artemia</i> , to the lowest with Chaplin Lake brine shrimp and intermediate results with the other bisexual strains. With the exception of the Chaplin lake strain, the growth results were positively correlated with the size and weight of the...

Mineral requirement of Penaeids ArchiMer
Piedad-pascual, F.
Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Dietary sources for growth may be necessary due to losses during moltings.

No efficiency of the lateral system on nocturnal feeding in the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) ArchiMer
Faucher, Karine; Dutto, Gilbert; Coves, Denis; Aubert, Anne; Lagardere, Jean-paul.
In order to evaluate the effect and consequence of lateral system inactivation on fish nocturnal feeding, the differential growth of groups of European sea bass maintained in different rearing conditions were compared. Whereas some fish with intact lateral system (placebo fish) were placed under a photoperiod of 12-L: 12-D, other placebo fish were kept in the dark. In the same way, fish deprived of lateral system by section of their lateral system nerves and antibiotic treatment were placed under a photoperiod of 12-L: 12-D and the others in the dark. For each of these four rearing conditions, two sets of experiment were realized. Percent mortality, feed rhythm, averaged daily feed demand, specific growth rate and feed efficiency were compared among these...

Protein metabolism, feed energy partitioning, behavior patterns and plasma cortisol in Nellore steers with high and low residual feed intake R. Bras. Zootec.
Gomes,Rodrigo da Costa; Sainz,Roberto Daniel; Leme,Paulo Roberto.
The objective was to evaluate protein turnover, nitrogen balance, feed energy partitioning, behavior patterns and plasma cortisol in Nellore (B. indicus) cattle with high and low residual feed intake (RFI = actual minus expected dry matter intake). Seventy-two Nellore steers (16 to 21 months-old, 334±19 kg initial body weight) were fed a feedlot diet for 70 days ad libitum. Daily dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) were recorded individually and RFI was calculated. The 12 steers of lowest (Low-RFI, most efficient) RFI and the 12 ones of highest RFI (High-RFI, least efficient) were evaluated with respect to their behavior patterns and plasma cortisol concentration. Urine was collected for determination of daily 3-methylhistidine excretion...

Abstract The objectives of this study were: 1) to classify animals into groups of high and low feed efficiency using two feed efficiency indexes (Residual feed intake (RFI) and residual feed intake and body weight gain (RIG)), and 2) to evaluate if pre-weaning heifer calves divergent for feed efficiency indexes exhibit differences in performance, body measurements, digestibility, energy partitioning, and nitrogen partitioning. A total of 32 Gyr heifer calves were enrolled in a 63-d trial and classified into two feed efficiency (FE) groups based on RFI and RIG (mean ± 0.5 SD). The groups were classified as high efficiency (HE) RFI (HE RFI, n = 9; HE RIG, n = 10), and low efficiency (LE) RFI (LE RFI, n = 10; LE RIG, n = 11). The remaining animals were...

Relationship between residual feed intake and enteric methane emission in Nellore cattle. Repositório Alice
MERCADANTE, M. E. Z.; CALIMAN, A. P. de M.; CANESIN, R. C.; BONILHA, S. F. M.; BERNDT, A.; FRIGHETTO, R. T. S.; MAGNANI, E.; BRANCO, R. H..
Residual feed intake (RFI) is an attractive measure of feed efficiency, as it does not depend on body size, growth rate, or body composition measures (Durunna et al., 2012). High-efficiency animals exhibit low RFI and consume less feed than expected for maintenance and production, whereas low-efficiency animals have high RFI and observed feed intake higher than the predicted feed intake. The possibility of improving production efficiency by exploiting the genetic variation in RFI and possible variation in traits related to emission of greenhouse gases is of great economic importance for beef cattle production. Studies have shown that selection of animals for low RFI (high feed efficiency) reduces methane emissions in cattle (Nkrumah et al., 2006; Hegarty...

Relationship between residual feed intake and enteric methane emission in Nellore cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Mercadante,Maria Eugênia Zerlotti; Caliman,Ana Paula de Melo; Canesin,Roberta Carrilho; Bonilha,Sarah Figueiredo Martins; Berndt,Alexandre; Frighetto,Rosa Toyoko Shiraishi; Magnani,Elaine; Branco,Renata Helena.
Feed intake and average daily gain (ADG) in Nellore cattle were determined to calculate residual feed intake in two performance tests: first during the growth phase (RFIgrowth) and then during a measurement of the methane emission phase (RFImet). During the RFIgrowth test, 62 males and 56 females were classified as low-, medium-, and high-RFI. Enteric methane emission was measured in 46 animals; 23 males used for RFImet measurement plus 23 females (22 low-RFIgrowth and 24 high-RFIgrowth). Diet consisted of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu hay (445 g/kg DM) and concentrate (555 g/kg DM). During the RFIgrowth and RFImet phases, DMI was lower in the animals with low RFI, with no difference in ADG. Residual feed intake was -0.359 and 0.367 kg DM/d for low- and...
