Residual feed intake and hematological and metabolic blood profiles of lle de France lambs R. Bras. Zootec.
Paula,Edson Ferraz Evaristo de; Souza,Damaris Ferreira de; Monteiro,Alda Lúcia Gomes; Santana,Miguel Henrique de Almeida; Gilaverte,Susana; Rossi Junior,Paulo; Locatelli Dittrich,Rosangela.
The objectives of this study were to estimate the phenotypic correlations of residual feed intake (RFI) and gross feed efficiency (GFE) with hematological and metabolic blood profiles of lambs and to determine the differences for these traits in animals of different RFI classes. Twenty Ile de France male lambs, 115±8 days of age and 31.3±4.1 kg of body weight (means ± SD), were individually housed and their dry matter intake was measured over 65 days. They were weighed every 13 days to determine the average daily weight gain and two blood samples were collected at the last two weighings (at 07h30) for analysis of blood variables. The animals were divided into two classes: negative RFI (most efficient: <0.5 SD below the mean; n = 6) and positive RFI...

Residual feed intake and its effect on carcass and meat characteristics of feedlot Zebu cattle. Repositório Alice
RIBEIRO, J. do S.; GONÇALVES, T. de M.; LADEIRA, M. M.; CAMPOS, F. R.; TULLIO, R. R.; MACHADO NETO, O. R.; OLIVEIRA, D. M. de; BASSI, M. S..
the objective of this study was to evaluate the residual feed intake (RFI) and its relation with performance, carcass and meat characteristics of Zebu animals. A total of 40 Zebu steers with initial age of 18 months and initial live weight of 350 kg were confined in feedlot for 112 days. The average daily gain (ADG) and dry matter intake (DMI) were obtained every 14 days. Residual feed intake was determined by the difference between observed and predicted DMI, based on the metabolic weight and the ADG. Animals were classified into the RFI groups: high (>0.5 standard deviation of the mean - least efficient), medium (±0.5 standard deviation of the mean) and low (<0.5 standard deviation of the mean - most efficient). Daily cost with feeding and per...

Residual feed intake in beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Arthur,J P.F.; Herd,R.M..
Providing feed is a major input cost in beef production, hence improvements in the efficiency of feed utilisation will reduce the cost of production. Residual feed intake (RFI) is a measure of feed efficiency, and is defined as the difference between an animal's actual feed intake and its expected feed intake based on its size and growth. It is independent of the level of production, and the lower the value the more efficient the animal is. This paper examines the current state of knowledge on RFI. Available information indicates that postweaning RFI is moderately heritable, and that selection for low RFI will result in progeny that consume less feed for the same level of production as progeny of high RFI cattle. Under ad libitum feeding, RFI is...

Sugarcane silage treated with calcium hydroxide in feedlot cattle diet: animal performance and meat quality. Repositório Alice
PEDROSO, A. de F.; NASSU, R. T.; TULLIO, R. R.; BERNDT, A.; BARIONI JUNIOR, W.; ESTEVES, S. N.; PEDROSO, A. M..
This study aimed to evaluate sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L) silage treated with calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2 - (slacked lime) as the only roughage source in a feedlot ration, regarding animal performance and meat quality. Forty five Canchim steers (22 months old, 345 kg body weight - BW) were assigned, in a complete randomized block design, to three treatments (total mixed rations - TMRs - with 35% roughage): T1- TMR with fresh sugarcane; T2 - TMR with sugarcane silage treated with calcium hydroxide (10 g Ca(OH)2/kg of fresh forage); T3 - TMR with corn silage. Dry matter intake (DMI), digestible DM intake (DDMI), crude protein intake (CPI), feed efficiency (FE), average daily gain (ADG) and dressing percentage (DP) were evaluated. Meat was analyzed for...
