Wetlands in most parts of the world are under threat of over-exploitation partly because their socio-economic value is not well known. Yala Wetland, the largest freshwater wetland in Kenya, with a large part of it bordering Lake Victoria’s shoreline, faces even greater threats of extinction. This wetland measures about 17,500 ha and is host to a number of indigenous fish species, animals and plants which are exploited by the local communities for subsistence and commercial purposes. There has been pressure to reclaim portions of this wetland for agricultural activity. So far, 2,300 ha has, indeed, been drained for commercial agriculture. Furthermore, it is difficult to control effort in the exploitation of the remaining wetland resources since the... |

Examination of published information on temperature, oxygen and other enviromental prefrences of tuna like fishes suggests that the Nigerian EEz should have commercial quantities of fishes. ICCAT historical catch and effort data analysed are confirmatory. given the prevailing low level of maintenance conciousness, initial investmnt and skills required, purse-seine may not be decidedly superior to pole ond line as capture technique. Prefered size of vessel type and gear specific scenarios are described. It appears that fuel costs can attract some of the multinational fleets to Nigeria and that transhipment facilities and a local canery are advantageous. |

The potential of the fishery resources of Nigeria (marine, brackish and freshwater) is assessed by means of primary and secondary data. The status of fish culture and its rapid development possibilities are discussed. Catch disposal and wastage therefore are critically examined. The inshore artisanal fisheries which have access to 128,000-170,000 mt of demersal pelagic and shellfish resources annually appear to be almost fully exploited. There is hope however for increased capture gear efficiency. On the other hand, the demersal stocks of the inshore industrial fishery, with a potential of 20,000 m.t. are still under-utilised. If poaching is eliminated, 3,500-4,000 mt of shrimp P. notialis can be harvested along with 7,000 mt of good sized fish as by... |

ABSTRACT Two Coryphaena hippurus morphotypes (dourado and palombeta) are found along the Brazilian coast and are considered by Rio de Janeiro’s fisherman and fishmongers as two different species. Furthermore, these morphotypes are commercialized under different values and suffer different fishing pressure. Therefore, a definition of their taxonomic status is an important economic and biological matter. In order to investigate this problem, allozyme electrophoresis method was undertaken for seventeen loci on 117 individuals of C. hippurus sampled at Cabo Frio/RJ (Brazil). The data indicate homogeneity between the morphotypes gene pools. Nevertheless, differences were found for genetic variation among dourado and palombeta, especially due to alcohol... |

Of the planet’s 600,000 km2 of coral reefs (Jameson et al., 1995), roughly 70-80% are located in developing countries. Many of these reefs are owned or controlled by indigenous fishing communities rather than national or state governments. These rural fishing communities are a primary force of destruction to coral reefs on a global scale (Wilkinson, 1998), therefore their involvement in the management and conservation of coral reefs will be an essential part of reversing coral reef decline.... |

The main types of wetlands in Tanzania are described as an introduction to a coverage of the fisheries of the large lakes, the minor waters, the rivers and the intertidal ecosystems.Fisheries potential is estimated and details of catches for each wetland type are given.Fishing techniques and the future of the fisheries are discussed and recommendations madefor future wetlands fishery conservation. |

Nineteen lightday rectangular transects were made 16 in the area of the Gulf of Guayaquil (Ecuador), and 3 in an oceanic area at the west of the Gulf of Guayaquil, this was the second part of research cruise, oriented to the evaluation of the small pelagic fish stocks, it was made between september 14th and 27th, 1995. The SIMRAD EK-500 acoustic system was used, installed on board of the National Research Institute (INP) R/V Tohallí. At the same time, people from the INP's Fisheries Observer Program were on four private enterprises vessels, while they were fishing in the same Gulf's area. They also made the biological sample of the commercial catch, for future relation with the results from the acoustic evaluation. The V/R Tohallí principal catch was jack... |

The main objectives of the present study were to describe the historical development of finfish fisheries in the Archipelago Sabana-Camagüey and adjacent northeast region (Cuba), and to assess the current status of fisheries resources. Species and size composition of trawl, trap, and gillnet catches were surveyed, fisheries statistics from fishing enterprises of the area were analysed, and experienced fishermen were interviewed. The historical evolution of catches and changes in fishing effort since 1962 is described. After a growth phase in catches resulting from increasing fishing effort, the fisheries reached a level of overexploitation by the second half of the 70s. The reduction of fishing effort and the establishment of some regulations has... |
