Abstract The Conservation Units (CU) were created to protect natural environments from growing degradation and to impede the expansion of urbanization and agricultural crops. The Serra da Canastra National Park, established to protect the headwaters of the São Francisco River and other places of scenic and ecological interest, is extensively visited due to its many tourist attractions, such as waterfalls, fauna and flora. An analysis of the park?s geography is needed to assess the risk involved in and its suitability for public use due to its territorial extension and environmental complexities. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the background of issues of interest to CU management. Additionally, we used high-resolution RapidEye imagery, altimetry and...

Relative reduction in annual soil loss in micro watersheds due to the relief and forest cover REA
Mingoti,Rafael; Vettorazzi,Carlos A.
With the intense debate, in Brazil, between landowners and public agencies about the amount of area with forest cover needed in different regions, there is an increase of the need for provision of technical data used as a basis for decision making. One of the criteria to evaluate the effect of forest cover in protecting water resources is the soil loss, which leads to several consequences on the environment, including the silting of the rivers. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the reduction in the soil loss in micro watersheds with different reliefs, size and location of forest cover, in the Corumbataí River watershed, in the state of São Paulo, using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) in a GIS environment. For this study, 18...

RISK MANAGEMENT POTENTIAL OF PRECISION FARMING TECHNOLOGIES AgEcon
Lowenberg-DeBoer, James.
Initial ideas on risk management uses of precision agricultural technology focused on site-specific treatment of problem areas to reduce the probability of low yields and returns. Recent discussions deal with sensor and remote-sensing information to improve marketing and "as applied maps" as trace-back mechanisms to manage liability. A theoretical model is presented that suggests that there are plausible circumstances under which precision farming can reduce temporal yield variability. Empirical evidence from an on-farm trial of site-specific P&K management in the Eastern Cornbelt supports the hypothesis that precision farming can have risk-reducing benefits.

Situação do saneamento básico nas áreas de concentração da agricultura familiar no Brasil. Repositório Alice
LANDAU, E. C.; MOURA, L.; GUIMARAES, D. P.; HIRSCH, A..
This study aimed to analyze the conditions of basic sanitation (water supply, sanitary sewage, solid waste collection) in the areas of concentration of family agriculture in Brazil. The areas with the highest concentration of family agriculture that present a high percentage of rural households with inadequate basic sanitation are subject to greater risks of diseases related to inadequate environmental sanitation, requiring the allocation of resources and efforts to improve basic sanitation conditions and of the living conditions of the rural population. The geographical distribution of basic sanitation services does not occur homogeneously. The situation is worse in the northeastern region of the country, where inadequate sanitary sewage is predominant...

Soil erosion by water estimated for 99 Uruguayan basins Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Carrasco-Letelier,Leonidas; Beretta-Blanco,Andrés.
Abstract Soil erosion can be accelerated by agricultural intensification, and the soil loss can alter the quality of water bodies. Sustainable agricultural production therefore requires the management of erosion and potential water pollution. In Uruguay, where there is heavy use of soil for agriculture, there is a need to continually develop and update erosion management policies. In this framework, we estimated the erosion in 99 drainage basins by analyzing and managing the information required (K, L, S, C and R-factors) in the universal soil loss equation (USLE) and the revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) in a geographical information system (GIS). The studied drainage basins encompass 73% of the area of Uruguay. The results include the...

Soil erosion vulnerability in the verde river basin, southern minas gerais Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Oliveira,Vinícius Augusto de; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Durães,Matheus Fonseca; Silva,Antônio Marciano da.
Soil erosion is one of the most significant environmental degradation processes. Mapping and assessment of soil erosion vulnerability is an important tool for planning and management of the natural resources. The objective of the present study was to apply the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) using GIS tools to the Verde River Basin (VRB), southern Minas Gerais, in order to assess soil erosion vulnerability. A annual rainfall erosivity map was derived from the geographical model adjusted for Southeastern Brazil, calculating an annual value for each pixel. The maps of soil erodibility (K), topographic factor (LS), and use and management of soils (C) were developed from soils and their uses map and the digital elevation model (DEM) developed for...

Spatial Distribution of Euschistus heros (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum Linnaeus) Anais da ABC (AABC)
WEBER,ANDERSON C.; DEGRANDE,PAULO E.; SOUZA,ELLEN P. DE; AZAMBUJA,ROSALIA; FERNANDES,MARCOS G..
Abstract Recently, the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (Pentatomidae: Hemiptera), has been detected in cotton in the Brazilian Cerrado. Several reliable surveys have been conducted on the spatial distribution of stink bugs in soybean; however, few studies have examined the behavior of this insect in cotton in Brazil. Thus, this study examined the spatial distribution of E. heros in cotton using aggregation indices based on the variance-to-mean ratio, Morisita index, exponent k, Poisson and negative binomial distributions. Inverse Distance Weighting interpolation maps were also used to represent insect density. The study was conducted in a 1.1 hectare experimental cotton field in which 64 equally-sized plots were sampled on a weekly basis. Our...

Spatial distribution of water erosion risk in a watershed with eucalyptus and Atlantic Forest Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Curi,Nilton; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Beskow,Samuel; Martins,Sérgio Gualberto.
The process of water erosion occurs in watersheds throughout the world and it is strongly affected by anthropogenic influences. Thus, the knowledge of these processes is extremely necessary for planning of conservation efforts. This study was performed in an experimental forested watershed in order to predict the average potential annual soil loss by water erosion using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) and a Geographic Information System (GIS), and then compared with soil loss tolerance. All the USLE factors were generated in a distributed approach employing a GIS tool. The layers were multiplied in the GIS framework in order to predict soil erosion rates. Results showed that the average soil loss was 6.2 Mg ha-1 yr-1. Relative to soil loss...

Spatial Dynamics of Sea Turtle Abundance and Shrimping Intensity in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico Ecology and Society
McDaniel, Carrie J; Duke University Marine Laboratory; cjmcdaniel@hotmail.com; Crowder, Larry B; Duke University Marine Laboratory; lcrowder@duke.edu; Priddy, Jeffery A; Duke University Marine Laboratory; jpriddy@duke.edu.
In order to examine the scientific feasibility of area closures for sea turtle protection, we determined the spatial dynamics of sea turtles for the U.S. Gulf of Mexico by analyzing National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) aerial survey data in September, October, and November of 1992, 1993, and 1994. Turtle sightings were grouped into depth zones and NMFS fishery statistical zones, and strip transect methods were used to estimate the relative abundance of sea turtles in each subzone. Average shrimping intensity was calculated for each subzone for all months of 1992, 1993, and 1994, as well as for the months and locations of the aerial survey. The spatial overlap of sea turtle abundance and shrimping intensity suggested regions where interactions are...

Spatial patterns and GIS habitat modelling of Solea solea, Pleuronectes flesus and Limanda limanda fish larvae in the eastern English Channel during the spring ArchiMer

The spring distribution of larval fish stages of flatfishes in the Dover Strait (eastern English Channel) was studied in 1995 and 1999. Fish larvae were identified and sorted according to developmental stages in order to study their ontogenic distribution. The French coastal waters are characterised by an unstable tide-dependent front, which influences larval dispersion. In spring, the French coastal waters have a high phytoplanktonic production. They have higher temperatures, lower salinities and differences in current intensity compared with the central English Channel waters. Generalised Additive Models (GAM) combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were used to model the potential habitats of life stages considering data from three major...

Spatio-temporal patterns in demersal elasmobranchs from trawl surveys in the eastern English Channel (1988-2008) ArchiMer
Martin, Corinne; Vaz, Sandrine; Ellis, J. R.; Coppin, Franck; Le Roy, Didier; Carpentier, Andre.
Elasmobranchs have life-history characteristics that make them more vulnerable to fishing than many teleost fish. As commercial landings data are usually not sufficient for the monitoring and assessment of elasmobranchs, fisheries-independent data, geostatistics and Geographic Information Systems were used to investigate the spatio-temporal patterns of sharks (6 species), skates (9 species) and stingray in the eastern English Channel. Temporal trends in relative abundance and distributions of total-length frequencies were investigated using data collected over 21 yr from an annual survey using a Grande Ouverture Verticale (GOV) trawl. Temporal trends in relative abundance were examined qualitatively in relation to the reported conservation status for the...
