This study was the first to be undertaken since 1901, since when natural and industrial changes had occurred to affect the habitat. Observations are reported here for the banks of the north and south shores, using certain points as reference. Features of the 2 shores are described, and an inventory given of the fauna of the banks. Hydrozoan Cnidaria, Bryozoans, Annelids, Molluscs, Crustacea and fish are listed with notes, and particular attention is given to the crabs found (Rhithropanopeus harrisii tridentatus). The monthly distribution of crab sizes and sexes is given, and the species of animals found in association with crabs is shown to vary according to the site studied. The percentage of female crabs found to be fertile each month was investigated,... |

Benthic habitats can be loosely divided into low and high relief based upon gross bottom topography. While fish community studies in high relief environments such as coral reefs have been extensively studied using in situ visual analysis, most studies of low relief environments have utilized trawl-based methodologies. Such studies while valuable, are unable to detect small-scale variations in habitat availability and faunal responses to that variation. This paper presents the availability of other techniques, ranging from visual surveys to sonar and bathymetric analysis, which allow research era to address questions of habitat utilization in low relief environments. |

The physical structure of coral reefs, like that of rainforests and other spatially-complex ecosystems, modulates light, fluid flow, and other physical variables to create a spatially and temporally complex mosaic of microhabitats. Accurate and affordable methods for quantifying this spatio-temporal variation are required to address many basic and applied research questions related to the ecology and management of reefs. Recent advances in semiconductor electronics technology have made it easier and much less expensive to build small and reliable datalogging instruments, which can be deployed in arrays to record spatio-temporal patterns of ecologically-important variables. Suitable instruments are already commercially available for $100 (US) or less per... |

Beam trawl, camera sled and submersible data from 2 000-3 300 m off central California produced similar fish faunal composition, but different density estimates. All species caught in trawls were observed in camera-sled and submersible observations. However, some rare species that were observed were not caught in trawls. The fish fauna was dominated by the families Macrouridae, Zoarcidae, Moridae, and Rajidae. Fishes both trawled and observed were the macrourids Coryphaenoides armatus, C. filifer and C. leptolepis; the zoarcids Bothrocara spp., Pachycara lepinium and Lycenchelys spp.; the morid Antimora microlepis; the rajid Bathyraja trachura, the ophidiid Spectrunculus grandis, and the liparidid Careproctus ovigerum. One unidentified liparidid... |

A standard, universally useful classification scheme for deepwater habitats needs to be established so that descriptions of these habitats can be accurately and efficiently applied among scientific disciplines. In recent years many marine benthic habitats in deep water have been described using geophysical and biological data. These descriptions can vary from one investigator to another, which makes it difficult to compare habitats and associated biological assemblages among geographic regions. Using geophysical data collected with a variety of remote sensor systems and in situ biological and geologic observations, we have constructed a classification scheme that can be used in describing marine benthic habitats in deep water. |

The ZoNeCo programme, devoted to the evaluation of living and non-living marine resources within the Economic Zone of New Caledonia, illustrates clearly the Marine Benthic Habitats concept. It exhibits the study of the physical environment and disciplines such as geology and physical oceanography. The results acquired in these fields are used as bases to study the presence and the distribution of living species within a given habitat. The knowledge of all the parameters relative to each discipline is a useful guide for the evaluation and the sustainable management of living and nonliving resources. |

The application of marine geophysics and GIS techniques to the characterization of benthic habitats has increased the ability of fisheries managers to assess distribution and habitat types beyond common practices. We report upon a 150 kHz sidescan sonar survey offshore of Kruzof Island, Alaska undertaken to characterize rockfish (Sebastes) habitat. Using GIS, MapGrafix and Map*Factory we determined the percentage of seafloor cover that exists in our survey area. Bathymetry in the study area was determined with sidescan interferometry. All XYZ data were gridded using Surfer and plotted in shaded relief, bathymetric contour, and 3-dimensional formats. Contoured bathymetry was used as an overlay in MapGrafix. Small sub-areas were extracted from the... |

Observations and recordings of Picumnus nebulosus Sundevall, 1866 were carried out at Santa Rita farm (21º15'S, 50º00'), municipality of Palmeira, state of Paraná, southern Brazil, from 1984 to 1991. The song of this species (0.25 s to 0.64 s total time) is composed by a series of four to six high pitched (6.3 to 7.8 kHz) and short (0.03 to 0.05 s) notes (n=23). The fight call is a series of very short notes emitted between 2 to 8 kHz during 0.23 s to 0.32 s (n=34). The drum, a sequence of pulses, is emitted during 3.5 to 7.2 s (n=42); the four sequences in the begining are composed by four pulses and the rest by three pulses. P. nebulosus was more abundant in forest patches than in continuous forest. It was usually watched foraging in branches 1 to 4 mm... |
