The protective effects of Baypamun®HK in mice experimentally infected with Toxoplasma gondii Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Cunha,Eva Laurice Pereira; Silva,Rodrigo Costa da; Da Silva,Aristeu Vieira; Langoni,Hélio.
The present work aimed to verify the effects of Baypamun®HK on the survival of albinic mice, experimentally infected with Toxoplasma gondii RH strain, treated or not with sulfadiazine-pirimetamine, as well as on the formation and the number of brain cysts. Four groups of 20 mices were inoculated with 10(5) tachizoites, subcutaneously, and undergone to different treatments. Serum tests were carried out by indirect immunofluorescence and samples of brain, liver and lung were collected from animals who died for cytological and brain cysts examinations. After 60 days, all survivors were sacrificed. Isolated Baypamun®HK didn't present a protective action against the infection by T. gondii, but its association sulfadiazine-pirimetamine, a specific treatment...

Impact of respiratory infections by influenza viruses A and B in pediatrics patients from Federal University of Paraná, Brazil BJID
Coelho,M.C.; Tsuchiya,L.R.R.V.; Nogueira,M.B.; Pereira,L.A.; Takahashi,G.A.; Cruz,C.R.; Raboni,S.M..
The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of influenza virus on pediatric hospitalized patients. We retrospectively reviewed records of children with laboratory diagnoses, by cell culture and/or indirect immunofluorescence assay, of influenza virus seen in a period of 6 years. A total of 1,033 samples were analyzed, 45 (4.3%) of them being reactive to influenza virus. Thirty-one samples were positive to influenza A virus and 14 to influenza B. The frequency of hospitalization in intensive care and medical emergency was found to be high. Three (8.6%) patients died, two of them due to respiratory failure. Low frequency of influenza virus infection was observed in the study. The data suggest the need of more efficient epidemiological...

Bartonella native valve endocarditis: the first brazilian case alive and well BJID
Lamas,C.; Favacho,A.; Ramos,R.G.; Santos,M.S.; Ferravoli,G.I.; Weksler,C.; Rozental,T.; Bóia,M.N.; Lemos,E.R.S..
Bartonella is an important cause of blood culture-negative endocarditis in recent studies. Seroprevalence studies in the States of Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro have shown Bartonella IgG positivity around 14% in healthy adults and 40% in HIV seropositive adults, respectively. A case report of a 46-year-old white male with moderate aortic regurgitation (AR) due to rheumatic heart disease (RHD), admitted due to worsening heart failure, is presented. Clinical features were apyrexia, anemia, polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia, hematuria and splenomegaly. He was submitted to surgery due to worsening AR. Histopathology of the excised valve showed active bacterial endocarditis and underlying RHD. Routine blood cultures were negative. Indirect immunofluorescence...

Characterization of rickettsia rickettsii in a case of Fatal Brazilian spotted fever in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJID
Lamas,Cristiane; Favacho,Alexsandra; Rozental,Tatiana; Bóia,Márcio N.; Kirsten,Andrei H.; Guterres,Alexandro; Barreira,Jairo; Lemos,Elba Regina S. de.
A lethal case of Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is presented. Clinical features were initially of gastrointestinal involvement and evolved with progression to septic shock, meningoencephalitis and death on the 6th day of illness. Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for spotted fever group rickettsia (SFGR) was non-reactive. Diagnosis was confirmed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the nucleotide sequencing of a fragment of the ompA gene showed 100% homology to Rickettsia rickettsii. BSF has not been reported in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the last three decades, and the present description should alert the clinicians to its presence in urban Rio de Janeiro, and to the differential diagnosis with dengue fever, gastroenteritis, leptospirosis...

Anti-Leishmania titers and positive skin tests in patients cured of kala-azar BJMBR
Viana,G.M.C.; Nascimento,M.D.S.B.; Diniz Neto,J.A.; Rabelo,E.M.F.; Binda Júnior,J.R.; Santos Júnior,O.M.; Santos,A.C.; Galvão,C.S.; Guimarães,R.S..
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), also known as kala-azar, is an important public health problem. If not treated, virtually all clinically symptomatic patients die within months. The diagnosis is based on the Montenegro skin test (MST) and anti-Leishmania titers. Nevertheless, the time required for cured individuals living in a leishmaniasis-endemic area to present a positive skin test and negative anti-Leishmania serology is known. To determine the cellular and humoral immune response profile in relation to different times post-VL cure, a cross-sectional study was conducted on subjects from a kala-azar endemic area in Paço do Lumiar, MA, Brazil, on the basis of 1995-2005 notifications reported by the National Health Foundation/Regional Coordination of...

Detection of adrenocortical autoantibodies in Addison's disease with a peroxidase-labelled protein A technique BJMBR
Silva,R.C.; Faiçal,S.; Laureti,S.; Falorni,A.; Dib,S.A.; Kater,C.E..
Adrenocortical autoantibodies (ACA), present in 60-80% of patients with idiopathic Addison's disease, are conventionally detected by indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on frozen sections of adrenal glands. The large-scale use of IIF is limited in part by the need for a fluorescence microscope and the fact that histological sections cannot be stored for long periods of time. To circumvent these restrictions we developed a novel peroxidase-labelled protein A (PLPA) technique for the detection of ACA in patients with Addison's disease and compared the results with those obtained with the classical IIF assay. We studied serum samples from 90 healthy control subjects and 22 patients with Addison's disease, who had been clinically classified into two groups:...
