The genetic diversity of three microsatellites (ILSTS027, MBO22, BM4325) mapped on the bovine chromosome 15 and linked to the follicle-stimulating hormone beta gene (FSHß) was investigated in cows of a Brangus Ibagé herd and the efficiency of these markers for individual identification and parentage control was estimated. Possible associations between each molecular marker and cow reproductive performance were also analyzed. Six alleles were detected in BM4325 and ILSTS027 and 12 in MB022, the most frequent being BM4325*101, BM4325*103, ILSTS027*169 and MB022*229. Polymorphic information content ranged from 0.58 to 0.88 while expected heterozygosity ranged from 65% to 89%, with an average mean value of 77%. Although only three markers were studied, the... |

Animal products traceability has acquired considerable importance as a security measure in EEC member countries since the food crisis of the mid-nineties. This has led to reinforcing the capacity to manage cattle product quality, with traceability emerging as the main tool to prevent risks to product security and quality as demanded by consumers in developed countries. The practical application of a traceability system for beef, based on molecular markers requires the election of a panel of microsatellites, as well as the optimization of methods of sampling and DNA analysis. In this work, a traceability system for beef based on a panel of 10 microsatellites markers was implemented. Different biological samples were evaluated, such as hair, blood, tissue... |

Bryde's whales, Balaenoptera edeni Anderson, 1879, were observed on 17 occasions (N = 21 surveys) in the coastal waters off Rio de Janeiro in southeastern Brazil during austral summer through autumn 2014. Five whales were individually identified using photo-identification techniques. The mean interval between resightings for all individuals was 12.8 days, with a minimum of one day and a maximum of 48 days. The comparison between the catalogs of Bryde's whales off Rio de Janeiro and the Cabo Frio region revealed matches for three individuals. The resightings show movements of up to 149.6 km along the coastal waters off the state of Rio de Janeiro. Most of the observations consisted of solitary individuals (82.3% of sightings). Feeding was the predominant... |
