Dry Extract of Passiflora incarnata L. leaves as a Cardiac and Hepatic Oxidative Stress Protector in LDLr-/- Mice Fed High-Fat Diet BABT
Sarto,Danielle Aparecida Quintino Silva; Siqueira,Ana Helena D’Arcadia de; Magalhaes,Francisco Monteiro de Almeida; Caproni,Karine de Paula; Martins,Ângela Maria; Santos,Gérsika Bitencourt; Silva,Délcio Bueno da; Boas,Brígida Monteiro Vilas; Garcia,José Antônio Dias.
ABSTRACT The control of dyslipidemia by using herbal products is an important subject for studies. In this study, we evaluated the effects of dry Passiflora incarnata L. extract over dyslipidemia, left ventricular hypertrophy, and hepatic oxidative stress of LDL receptor knockout mice (LDLr-/-). Forty 4-month old male LDLr-/- mice were distributed into four groups: Group standard diet; Group standard diet and 200 mg/kg of body weight of Passiflora incarnata L. leaf dry extract; Group high-fat diet; Group high-fat diet and 200 mg/kg of body weight of Passiflora incarnata L. leaf dry extract. After 30 days, Passiflora incarnata L. dry extract reduced the effects of the high-fat diet, with a decrease of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and increase of...

The association of ACE gene D/I polymorphism with cardiovascular risk factors in a population from Rio de Janeiro BJMBR
Cardoso,R.L.; Nogueira,A.R.; Salis,L.H.A.; Ürményi,T.P.; Silva,R.; Moura-Neto,R.S.; Pereira,B.B.; Rondinelli,E.; de Souza e Silva,N.A..
Our aim was to determine the frequencies of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene alleles D and I and any associations to cardiovascular risk factors in a population sample from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eighty-four adults were selected consecutively during a 6-month period from a cohort subgroup of a previous large cross-sectional survey in Rio de Janeiro. Anthropometric data and blood pressure measurements, echocardiogram, albuminuria, glycemia, lipid profile, and ACE genotype and serum enzyme activity were determined. The frequency of the ACE*D and I alleles in the population under study, determined by PCR, was 0.59 and 0.41, respectively, and the frequencies of the DD, DI, and II genotypes were 0.33, 0.51, and 0.16, respectively. No association...

The role of secondary hyperparathyroidism in left ventricular hypertrophy of patients under chronic hemodialysis BJMBR
Randon,R.B.; Rohde,L.E.; Comerlato,L.; Ribeiro,J.P.; Manfro,R.C..
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients frequently develop structural cardiac abnormalities, particularly left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). The mechanisms involved in these processes are not completely understood. In the present study, we evaluated a possible association between parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and left ventricular mass (LVM) in patients with ESRD. Stable uremic patients on intermittent hemodialysis treatment were evaluated by standard two-dimensional echocardiography and their sera were analyzed for intact PTH. Forty-one patients (mean age 45 years, range 18 to 61 years), 61% males, who had been on hemodialysis for 3 to 186 months, were evaluated. Patients were stratified into 3 groups according to serum PTH: low levels (<100 pg/ml;...

Relationship between microalbuminuria and cardiac structural changes in mild hypertensive patients BJMBR
Plavnik,F.L.; Silva,M.A.M.R.T.; Kohlmann,N.E.B.; Kohlmann Jr.,O.; Ribeiro,A.B.; Zanella,M.T..
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between urinary albumin excretion (UAE), cardiac structural changes upon echocardiography and 24-h ambulatory blood pressure (ABPM) levels. Twenty mild hypertensive patients (mean age 56.8 ± 9.6 years) were evaluated. After 2 weeks of a washout period of all antihypertensive drugs, all patients underwent an echocardiographic evaluation, a 24-h ABPM and an overnight urine collection. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure during 24-h ABPM was 145 ± 14/91 ± 10 mmHg (daytime) and 130 ± 14/76 ± 8 mmHg (nighttime), respectively. Seven (35%) patients presented UAE > or = 15 µg/min, and for the whole group, the geometric mean value for UAE was 10.2 x/÷ 3.86 µg/min. Cardiac measurements showed mean values...

Ischemia and fibrosis: the risk mechanisms of hypertensive heart disease BJMBR
Frohlich,E.D..
Mechanisms underlying risk associated with hypertensive heart disease (HHD) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) are discussed in this report and provide a rationale for understanding this very common and important cause of death from hypertension and its complications. Emphasized are impaired coronary hemodynamics, endothelial dysfunction, and ventricular fibrosis from increased collagen deposition intramurally and perivascularly. Each is exacerbated by aging and, perhaps, also by increased dietary salt intake. These functional and structural changes promote further endothelial dysfunction, altered coronary hemodynamics, and diastolic as well as systolic ventricular contractile function in HHD. The clinical endpoints of HHD include angina pectoris (with...

MicroRNA profiling identifies miR-7-5p and miR-26b-5p as differentially expressed in hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy BJMBR
Kaneto,C.M.; Nascimento,J.S.; Moreira,M.C.R.; Ludovico,N.D.; Santana,A.P.; Silva,R.A.A.; Silva-Jardim,I.; Santos,J.L.; Sousa,S.M.B.; Lima,P.S.P..
Recent evidence suggests that cell-derived circulating miRNAs may serve as biomarkers of cardiovascular diseases. However, a few studies have investigated the potential of circulating miRNAs as biomarkers for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). In this study, we aimed to characterize the miRNA profiles that could distinguish hypertensive patients with LHV, hypertensive patients without LVH and control subjects, and identify potential miRNAs as biomarkers of LVH. LVH was defined by left ventricular mass indexed to body surface area >125 g/m2 in men and >110 g/m2 in women and patients were classified as hypertensive when presenting a systolic blood pressure of 140 mmHg or more, or a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg or more. We employed miRNA PCR...
