Density and diversity of filamentous fungi in the water and sediment of Araçá bay in São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Doi,Sonia Assami; Pinto,Aline Bartelochi; Canali,Maria Carolina; Polezel,Daiane Raquel; Chinellato,Roberta Alves Merguizo; Oliveira,Ana Julia Fernandes Cardoso de.
Abstract Araçá Bay, located in the city of São Sebastião, São Paulo, Brazil, is a protected area of substantial complexity. It represents the last remaining mangrove swamp preserve between the cities of Bertioga and Ubatuba on the northern coast of São Paulo State. This mangrove swamp has specific physical and chemical properties, and it shelters a wide variety of life, including fungi. These microorganisms are present in a variety of species with different morphophysiological features, and they have the ability to produce enzymes of biotechnological importance. The goal of this study was to quantify, isolate, and identify filamentous fungi in water and sediment samples from the Araçá Bay mangrove swamp in São Sebastião. Two samplings were performed in the...

Fungi Present on Pinus taeda Needles in Early Stages of Decomposition in the Field PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Ghizelini, Angela Michelato; Auer, Celso Garcia; Pimentel, Ida Chapaval.
Knowing of the dependence between local area productivity, nutrient cycling and litter decomposition process, the knowledge of the mycobiota responsible for decomposition is the right way to obtain answers about forest’s productivity and nutrient’s demand. This study determined the fungal diversity during litter decomposition of needle of Pinus taeda in an experimental plantation with four years old, located at Três Barras, SC, Brazil. Senescent needles were collected from trees in november/2003 and putted in selective bags for microorganisms, which were left over the forest litter. The first sample was taken to the laboratory and the remaining ones were kept in situ so that the needles continue their natural decomposition process and were collected every...

Hyphomycetes from soil of an area affected by copper mining activities in the State of Bahia, Brazil BJM
Costa,Isabella P.M. Wanderley; Cavalcanti,Maria Auxiliadora Q.; Fernandes,Maria José S.; Lima,Débora M.M..
With the aim of observing the impact produced by copper-mining activities on soil fungi, samples were collected from an area at the Caraíba Mining, in the State of Bahia, Brazil. This area was divided in six sub-areas: one had native vegetation and was used as control, while the others varied according to degrees of impact. The samples, collected during the dry and the rainy seasons, were submitted to serial dilutions and placed on Petri dishes with Sabouraud medium plus antibiotic. Sixty five species and 16 genera of Hyphomycetes were identified: Acremonium, Acrophialophora, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Chrysosporium, Curvularia, Fusarium, Humicola, Malbranchea, Myrothecium, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Scolecobasidium, Staphylotrichum, Stilbella and...

Myxomycetes occurring on Cecropia adenopus (Cecropiaceae) in fragments of Atlantic Rainforest Acta Botanica
Bezerra,Andrea Carla Caldas; Costa,Antonia Aurelice Aurélio; Cavalcanti,Laise de Holanda.
Cecropia adenopus (Ambay pumpwood) is a frequent native species on the edges of woods and clearings and is considered a pioneer species in re-colonized areas. Despite its distribution from Mexico to Argentina, this substrate has never been examined in detail regarding the presence of Myxomycetes. In the present study, the myxobiota associated with leaf debris of C. adenopus was investigated in two Atlantic Rainforest conservation units located in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. Five specimens and one plasmodium were obtained directly from the field and 87 were developed in 43.7% of 200 moist-chamber cultures set up separately with blades and petioles. Fifteen species were identified and illustrated. The two predominant groups were...

Bianchi,Ronaldo Michel; Cecco,Bianca Santana de; Schwertz,Claiton Ismael; Panziera,Welden; Andrade,Caroline Pinto de; Spanamberg,Andreia; Ravazzolo,Ana Paula; Ferreiro,Laerte; Driemeier,David.
ABSTRACT: This report describes the clinical, pathological, and molecular aspects of a pneumonia by Cryptococcus neoformans in a goat in the Southern region of Brazil. A goat with a history of prolonged transportation presented dyspnea, nasal discharge and cough, and was subjected to necropsy, histopathology, and mycological evaluation. Grossly, cranio-ventral pulmonary consolidation was observed, characterized by firm and grayish areas interspersed with dark red foci. Histopathology of the lungs showed areas of parenchymal necrosis, containing blastoconidia with a slightly basophilic central cell, surrounded by an unstained capsule. It was associated with moderate granulomatous inflammatory infiltrate and peripheral fibrosis. The capsule and fungus cell...
