Evidence for the true type-locality of Rhamdia quelen (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae), and the geographical origin and invalid neotype designation of four of its synonyms Neotropical Ichthyology
Koerber,Stefan; Reis,Roberto E..
ABSTRACT Historical information on the probable type-locality of Pimelodus quelen and of its four junior synonyms that share the same neotype, Pimelodus namdia, Pimelodus sebae, Heterobranchus sextentaculatus, and Silurus rivularis, is presented and discussed. The neotype designation for those four species is deemed invalid for not complying with the provisions of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, making it technically possible to revalidate any of the four taxa from the synonymy of Rhamdia quelen without having to address the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature. The type-locality of both Curimata gilbert and Callichthys asper are also restricted to rio Macacu at the village of Japuíba, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Has one of Captain Cook’s possums landed in Leiden? The possible holotype of Pseudocheirus peregrinus (Boddaert, 1785) Naturalis
Smeenk, C..
The identity of an old female specimen of Pseudocheirus peregrinus (Boddaert, 1785) in the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, is discussed and the early descriptions and nomenclatural history of the species are reviewed. The assumption by Temminck (1824) and Jentink (1888) that the animal originated from one of Cook’s expeditions is extensively considered, since in that case it would be the holotype of Didelphis peregrinus Boddaert, 1785 and of some objective synonyms. The documentation of the specimen is insufficient to draw a definitive conclusion. However, the damage to the facial skin of the animal collected at Endeavour River in 1770 mentioned by Pennant (1781) would agree with the state of the Leiden specimen, which must have been badly...

Identity of Hitherto doubtful specific names in European Nepticulidae (Lepidoptera) Naturalis
Nieukerken, E.J. van; Johansson, R..
The identity of hitherto doubtful specific names in Nepticulidae has been established on the basis of type material where possible, or after a critical reexamination of the original descriptions. In addition a few previously synonymized names have been reevaluated. The identity of 17 names could be firmly established: 15 are synonymized with senior, well known names, two are senior synonyms to previously used names: Stigmella sakhalinella Puplesis (= S. discidia Schoorl & Wilkinson syn. nov.) and Trifurcula subnitidella (Duponchel) comb. nov. (= Trifurcula griseella Wolff syn. nov.). Two names are tentatively synonymized. Three names are excluded from Nepticulidae: Tinea commatella Schrank, 1802 (probably a trichopteron), Tinea minimella Costa...

Land tortoise types in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie with comments on nomenclature and systematic (Reptilia: Testudines: Testudinidae) Naturalis
Hoogmoed, M.S.; Crumly, C.R..
The holotype of Testudo vosmaeri Fitzinger, 1826 [= Geochelone vosmaeri] is RMNH 6001. The holotype of Testudo forstenii Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= lndotestudo forstenii] is RMNH 3811. I. forstenii is considered a senior synonym of T. travancorica Boulenger, 1907 because plastral colour pattern, gular measurements, and general shell morphology do not distinguish Indian populations from Indonesian populations. The lectotype of Testudo emys Schlegel & Müller, 1840 [= Manouria emys] is RMNH 3808. lndotestudo and Manouria are recognized as separate genera and briefly diagnosed. In order to avoid nomenclatural confusion and conserve current usuage, the pre-Linnaean figure in Piso (1658: 105) is selected as the lectotype for Testudo geometrica Linnaeus,...

Morphological variation and taxonomic revision of five south-eastern subspecies of Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca (L.) (Aves: Sylviidae) Naturalis
Loskot, V.M..
Individual, sex, age, seasonal and geographic variation of size and plumage coloration of Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca (Linnaeus, 1758) was studied on more than 1100 bird skins from all parts of its breeding range. The results of analysis of birds from the south-eastern part of the breeding range of the species support the validity of five light-coloured subspecies: halimodendri Sushkin, 1904, telengitica Sushkin, 1925, snigirewskii Stachanow, 1929, minula Hume, 1873, and margelanica Stolzmann, 1897. Their diagnoses and ranges are refined and supplemented. Numerous phenotypically intermediate birds from intergradation zones between the subspecies show that these five together with the two northern darkcoloured forms S. c. curruca and S. c. blythi...

Nematois australis Heydenreich, 1851 (currently Adela australis; Insecta; Lepiodoptera): proposed presedence over Tinea aldrovandella Villers 1789 Naturalis
Kozlov, M.V.; Nieukerken, E.J. van.
The purpose of this application, under articles 23.9.3 and 81.2.3 of the Code, is to conserve the widely used specific name Adela australis (Heydenreich, 1851) for a common south European fairy moth (family Adelidae) by giving it precedence over the questionable senior synonym Tinea aldrovandella Villers 1789. T. aldrovandella was not used after publication until 1980 when it was mentioned as a possible synonym of A. australis. Since 1980, some, but not all authors have accepted this synonymy.

Nomenclator Actinologicus seu Indices Ptychodactiariarum, Corallimorphariarum et Actiniarianum comprising indexes of the taxa, synonyms, authors and geographical distributions of the sea anemones of the world included in Professor Oskar Carlgren's 1949 survey Naturalis
Williams, R.B..
In 1949, the late Professor Oskar Carlgren of Lund, Sweden, published a bibliographical survey of the sea anemones of the world, comprising 42 families, 201 genera and 848 species. The survey is an essential starting point for any taxonomic or zoogeographical work on sea anemones. However, the enormous wealth of information that it contains is difficult to extract, because of the lack of adequate indexation. Indexes have therefore been prepared to increase the usefulness of the survey. They are: I, Nomenclatural; II, Authors; III, Geographical. Two appendixes give details of new nominal taxa and nomina nuda published in the survey. No attempt has been made to correct or revise the results of Carlgren's survey: the objective is solely to facilitate the...
