I nitratfølsomme vandindvindingsområder med landbrugsproduktion tilrådes af forsigtighedshensyn en grænseværdi på 50 mg nitrat pr. liter i nedsivningsvandet. Til trods for et lavere udvaskningspotentiale i økologisk end i konventionelt jordbrug, så har økologisk jordbrug ikke altid nitratkoncentrationer under grænseværdien – det gælder især på kvægbrugene. Årsagen er, at intensive afgræsningssystemer forøger tabsrisikoen pga. at drøvtyggere udskiller 75-95% af deres N-indtag i gødningen, og hovedparten af dette bliver afsat i marken under afgræsning. På den måde sker der en betydelig opbygning af N i afgræsningsmarker, og ved ompløjning frigives derfor hyppigt N i et omfang, som den efterfølgende afgrøde ikke er i stand til at udnytte med nitratudvaskning...

The soil management systems cause changes to the aggregation and the stock of soil organic matter (SOM). The aim was to evaluate the influence of the winter cover crops and the tillage systems in aggregation and carbon (C) stock in soil and SOM fractions. The experiment started in 1986 at the Agronomic Institute of Paraná, in Pato Branco, in an Oxisol. The treatments are a combination of winter cover crops: black oat, rye, hairy vetch, common vetch, oilseed radish, blue lupine, wheat and fallow, and tillage systems: no tillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT), in split plot design with three replications. Agronomic options for the management of phosphorus in Australian rain-fed organic broadacre farming systems Organic Eprints

The paper is an overview of strategies for agronomic management of P in organic broad-acre farming systems within the Australian rain-fed cereal/livestock belt. It concludes that to raise and maintain adequate plant-available P in these systems the importation of organic manures or composts from off-farm will be required, although the immediate issue may be access to economically viable sources. Improving the P-use efficiency of the system by incorporating species into rotation or intercropping systems that are able to access P from less soluble sources has been a successful strategy elsewhere in the world and deserves further research effort in Australia. Agronomic performance of annual self-reseeding legumes and their self-establishment potential in the Apulia region of Italy. Organic Eprints

The agronomic performance, biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) ability and self-establishment potential of seven species of annual self-reseeding legumes were investigated in Apulia region, Italy. For the first cropping cycle (2005-2006) preliminary results showed that Trifolium spp. performed better than Medicago spp. Among the seven species, five were more suitable to the site’s conditions. T. angustifolium and M. polymorpha gave the best results. T. angustifolium fixed 131.7 kg ha-1 year of nitrogen (15N isotope dilution method), produced 1976 kg ha-1 of seeds and 8.7 t ha-1 of dry matter (DM). Ull er et næringsrikt materiale og lavverdiull (skitten, filtet og noen fraksjoner av pigmentert ull)kan ha verdi som en næringsstoffressurs i landbruket. Rapporten omhandler en kartlegging av slik ull gjennom en spørreundersøkelse blant sauebønder i Fosenregionen. Flere gårdbrukere svarte at de kaster eller brenner ullen og noen sa de ønsker seg kunnskap om alternative måter å bruke ullen på. I prosjektet ble ull undersøkt som bestanddel i talle med halm til sau. Tallen ble siden lagt opp i komposter. Etter å ha vært først i talle og deretter i kompost, var ullen på god vei til å brytes ned. Hvorvidt komposten hadde tilfredsstillende spredeegenskaper ble ikke undersøkt i dette forsøket. Increasing number of stockless organic farms give reason to search for new forms of clover-grass (CG) utilization in order to maintain or increase soil fertility and productivity. A quantitative study was carried out among 93 organic farms to identify different forms of CG utilization and their assets and drawbacks on organic farms. Different ways of CG transfer such as direct transfer (cut & carry) and indirect transfer stockless farms. In addition, seven farms were interviewed about their experiences with CG transfer practices. The farmers rate CG transfer mainly positive, since it may partially compensate the negative effects on soil fertility through the missing manure on stockless organic farms. Amino acids in dew - origin and seasonal variation Organic Eprints

At two sites in the Armenhof district, 10 km east of Fulda, Germany, dew samples were collected from June 1996 to June 1997 and investigated for free and protein bound amino acids. On account of the high pollen content, at the beginning of June 1996 and in May 1997 total amino acid concentrations were 53 – 390 µmol/l, in one sample 922 µmol/l. At other times the concentration in dew was 8 to 164 µmol/l. On 4 and 5 June 96 the diluted free amino acid fraction (DFAA) of the total hydrolyzed amino acids (THAA) at both sites amounted to 35 – 44% and was predominantly arginine, proline and glutamine/glutamate. Globally, soil carbon sequestration is expected to hold a major potential to mitigate agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. However, the majority of life cycle assessments (LCA) of agricultural products have not included possible changes in soil carbon sequestration. In the present study, a method to estimate carbon sequestration to be included in LCA is suggested and applied to two examples where the inclusion of carbon sequestration is especially relevant: 1) Bioenergy: removal of straw from a Danish soil for energy purposes and 2) Organic versus conventional farming: comparative study of soybean production in China. Anaerobic co-digestion of grass and forbs – Influence of cattle manure or grass based inoculum Organic Eprints

Anaerobic co-digestion of agricultural by-products or wastes with complementarity characteristics is commonly used to enhance methane yield. This study firstly explores the possibility of co-digesting grass and forb species (white clover, chicory and plantain) differing in nutrient composition in enhancing methane yield. This was examined with two inocula (a cattle manure-based inoculum and a grass-based inoculum) in a batch assay. Results showed that co-digesting grass and forbs synergistically enhanced methane yield potential on average by 31 L kg−1 volatile solids (+11%) and reduced lag phase time by 0.8 day in the grass-based inoculum, but not in the cattle manure-based inoculum. Anaerobic mono-digestion of lucerne, grass and forbs - Influence of species and cutting frequency Organic Eprints

In the present study, biogas potentials of multispecies swards including grass, lucerne, caraway, ribwort plantain and chicory from two- and four-cut regimes (Mix-2 and Mix-4) for mono-digestion applying batch and continuous modes under lab-scale conditions were investigated. The gas yields in terms of volatile solids (VS)loaded from Mix-2 and Mix-4 were compared with pure stand lucerne from the four cuts regime (Lu-4). The batch test results indicate that methane yield on a VS basis was highest from Mix-4 (295 L kg−1), followed by Mix-2 (281 L kg−1) and Lu-4 (255 L kg−1). Humus balance methods produces organic matter balance sheets calculated from factors describing the cultivation effects of humus increasing and humus depleting crops, and organic manure application. Related results were tested for accuracy by comparison with findings from long-term field trials conducted in different climatic regions and soil types throughout Germany.
