Grazing with heifers and sows alone or mixed: herbage quality, sward structure and animal weight gain Organic Eprints
Sehested, Jakob; Søegaard, Karen; Danielsen, Viggo; Roepstorff, Allan; Monrad, Jesper.
The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of mixed grazing (MI) by sows and heifers with alternate grazing (AL) or grazing heifers (HN) and sows (SN) alone on animal weight gain, sward structure, herbage quality and composition, and selection during grazing. Mixed or alternate grazing consistently improved the weight gain in both heifers and sows, compared with grazing one species alone, but the positive effect was statistically significant only for heifers. The herbage quality of the MI and AL systems was better compared with the SN system, but not clearly better compared with the HN system. The total animal weight gain (heifers+sows) and estimated herbage intake per hectare were also higher in the MI and AL systems compared with SN and HN...

Green biomass – protein production through bio-refining. Organic Eprints
Gylling, M.; Lübeck, Mette; Fog, Erik.
The aim of this report is to summarize our present knowledge on the bio-technical as well as economic issues in relation to value creation of green biomass in Denmark. This includes many types of knowledge from the different types of actors included in activities going on at present in this field. To start the work, a kick-off workshop was held in Copenhagen in January 2016, where a range of stakeholders from many fields enthusiastically expressed their views and ideas as regards what to include and take into account in the report. We have tried to include these as far as possible. Thus a number of persons have contributed directly in the writing process whereas as others have contributed with particular overall insight.

Growth and chemical composition of chicory and performance of lambs grazing chicory relative to grass–clover mixtures Organic Eprints
Kidane, Alemayehu; Sørheim, Kristin; Eik, Lars Olav; Steinshamn, Håvard.
We report results from trials on chicory growth (experiment 1) and lamb growth on chicory (experiment 2). In experiment 1, we assessed yield and chemical composition on swards established under organic conditions as perennial ryegrass/red clover, perennial ryegrass/chicory, chicory/red clover (CHRC), pure perennial ryegrass (RG-alone) and pure chicory (CHalone) over two years. Chicory/red clover and CH-alone showed improved crude protein, Ca, Mg, P, Cu and net energy contents compared to other mixtures. However, dry matter yield was the lowest for CHRC and CH-alone compared to others. In experiment 2, 48 weaned lambs grazed swards sown as chicory alone (CHA), chicory–grass–clover mix (CGC) or grass–clover mix (GCM) for 45 days. Lamb body weight (BW)...

Growth, competitive strength and herbage quality of herbs in multispecies leys Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M..
Herbs are established in many organic grasslands due to expected beneficially properties of nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting management and slurry application. The competitiveness of the species varied very much. Plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and lucerne (Medicargo sativa) competed best under cutting, opposite chicory (Cichorium intybus) that competed best under grazing. Caraway (Carum carvi), burnet (Poterium sanguisorba) and lotus (Lotus coniculatus) had a relative low competitiveness. Slurry application did not affect the proportion of non-leguminous herbs. The nutritive value differed very much. Caraway had the highest and...

Hay production in North Europa Organic Eprints
Kristensen, T.; Søegaard, K..
Hay feeding might have some advantaged in relation to herd health and reduces the risk for contamination of the milk with spores. Hay production compared to silage is more resource intensive – like use of energy for drying. Hay from two types of herb enriched grass swards and the traditional grassland showed no difference in intake or milk production when compared at three organic farms. Feed efficiency tended to be lower than standards based on silage feeding.

Herbage dry-matter production and forage quality of three legumes and four non-leguminous forbs grown in single-species stands Organic Eprints
Elgersma, A.; Søegaard, K.; Jensen, S.K..
Agronomic data on most broad-leaved species of grasslands are scarce. The aim of this study was to obtain novel information on herbage DM yield and forage quality for several forb species, and on species differences and seasonal patterns across harvests and in successive years. Four non-leguminous forbs [salad burnet (Sanguisorba minor), caraway (Carum carvi), chicory (Cichorium intybus) and ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata)] and three leguminous forbs [yellow sweet clover (Melilotus officinalis), lucerne (Medicago sativa) and birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus)] and a perennial ryegrass–white clover mixture were investigated in a small-plot cutting trial in Denmark during 2009 and 2010. Plots were harvested four times per year. On average, annual...

Herbs in high producing organic grasslands – effect of management Organic Eprints
Søegaard, K.; Eriksen, J.; Askegaard, M..
In many organic grasslands herbs are established due to their expected beneficial properties for nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting and fertilization managements to examine the growth potential and feeding value. The competitiveness of the different species varied greatly. Chicory, plantain and caraway were competitive in mixtures with traditional grassland species. Lotus and salad burnet were weak competitors and chervil and sainfoin were very weak. The feeding value was also highly variable. Caraway had high digestibility of organic matter, also compared with the traditional grassland species, whereas plantain and salad burnet had...

High variability of symbiotic nitrogen fixation in farming conditions Organic Eprints
Riesinger, Paul; Herzon, Irina.
Symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF) in perennial legume-grass leys is the primary source of N to organic farming systems in northern countries. This work aimed to quantify SNF in organically managed red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)-grass leys and to relate SNF to explanatory variables. The study was carried out on 27 farms located in the coastal regions of Finland and included 117 ley crops subjected to regular organic farming practices. SNF was calculated from clover herbage dry-matter yield with an empirical model. In the accumulated first and second cuts of one- and two-year-old red clover-grass leys, SNF averaged 185.4 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (SD ± 90.0 kg N ha-1 yr-1); fixation in the aftermath added 62.1 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (SD ± 49.8 kg N ha-1 yr-1). Due to the...

Hospodaření na trvalých travních porostech a využívání agroenviromentálních programů v ekologickém zemědělství v ČR Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Friebel, Ludvik; Konvalina, Petr.
