Même si les infections graves dues à E. coli O157: H7 sont rares, elles restent globalement une menace pour l'homme. D'où l'importance des recherches pour mieux comprendre les mécanismes moléculaires en cause dans l'émergence de nouvelles souches bactériennes très virulentes chez l'homme. Il est aussi indispensable de respecter les mesures d'hygiène pour minimiser voire éviter la contamination par E. coli.

L’algue brune Padina pavonica a été récoltée durant une période d’une année (Juillet 2006 à Juin 2007), dans la côte nord de la Tunisie (Cap Zebib) en vue d'évaluer l'activité antibactérienne d’extraits bruts de l’algue et leur variabilité saisonnière. Les extraits d’algue ont été préparés en utilisant le Dichlorométhane et le Dichlorométhane/Méthanol et testés périodiquement (tous les mois) sur une gamme de bactéries pathogènes et des bactéries associées isolées de l’algue. The authors studied survival of faecal coliform (decrease rate + T90) in experimental devices (closed or continuous flow systems) using various dilutions of urban sewage in sea-water. Survival appears to be high (T90 between 12 to 81 h). Dilution level of sewage and organic matter contents seems to be important to explain the decrease of faecal coliforms observed in these experiments.

From microcosm studies, V. cholerae and related potential human pathogens enter a viable but nonculturable state. Direct viable counts by epifluorescent microscopy consistently remain higher than corresponding plate counts. Thus, the assumption that pathogens "die-off" or "decay" in the marine environment must be re-evaluated, since stressed or nutrient-starved cells are unable to grow and be enumerated by standard plate count methods. Indirect immunofluorescent microscopy offers a more sensitive detection system for environment sampling for human pathogens. There is a need for a standard in vitro procedure to infect larval fish with bacteria. Such a procedure could be used as a tool to evaluate fish quality, verify fish sensitivity to a certain bacterial strain or evaluate the pathogenicity of a bacterium towards a given fish species. The availability of a challenge test is a prerequisite in studies dealing with the effect of different medicinal treatments on diseased fish. An oral challenge test would offer the possibility to investigate the routes of infection via the digestive tract, i.e. after feeding contaminated feeds. A comparative in vitro antibacterial potential of extracts (aqueous and ethanol) of five important medicinal plants (Aegle marmelos, Azadirachta indica, Terminalia chebula, Mangifera indica and Ocimum sanctum) were investigated using microbial growth inhibition assays against the common human pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) of clinical origin. As a result of an agreement signed by the Municipal Government of Baradero Buenos Aires Province, Argentina and the INIDEP, the sanitary quality of the Baradero River waters was studied and fish safety assessed. Results of five field surveys carried out between 1993 and 1997 are studied. Organochlorine and organophosphorate pesticide residues, as well as traces of heavy metals were analyzed in 49 fish specimens and aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AHB), total coliform bacteria (TC) and fecal coliform bacteria (FC) were counted out in 7 sampling stations placed on the coast and the riverbed. Seagrasses species in Bardawil Lake have been defined through broad quantitative sampling. From the biochemical constituent's point of view, two species namely; Cymodocea nodosa and Ruppia cirrhosa were evaluated as feed additives and antimicrobial active compounds. The obtained results showed an obvious increase in chlorophyll "a", carbohydrate and lipid contents in the C. nodosa than R. cirrhosa while protein contents was higher in R. cirrhosa than in C. nodosa. A white spot disease-like syndrome in the Pacific blue shrimp (Litopenaeus stylirostris) as a form of bacterial shell disease ArchiMer

In May 1997, some white lesions evoking the white spot syndrome disease were observed in Litopenaeus stylirostris broodstock in New Caledonia. The occurrence of these lesions was neither associated with mortality, nor with histological evidence of white spot syndrome baculovirus (WSBV), The evidence suggests that these lesions result from a form of bacterial disease and are associated with an increased bacterial flora on the outer surface of the cuticle, as well as an increased incidence throughout the molt cycle. A microscopic observation of these lesions allows them to be differentiated from WSBV-associated lesions.

BACKGROUND: Honey is a natural product obtained from the nectar that is collected from flowers by bees. It has several properties, including those of being food and supplementary diet, and it can be used in cosmetic products. Honey imparts pharmaceutical properties since it has antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The antibacterial and antioxidant activities of Thai honey were investigated in this study. RESULTS: The honey from longan flower (source No. 1) gave the highest activity on MRSA when compared to the other types of honey, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 12.5% (v/v) and minimum bactericidal concentration of 25% (v/v). The sediments of Morecambe Bay contain large numbers of salinity-tolerant, nitrogen-fixing Enterobacteriaceae (NFEs) mainly Klebsiella pneumoniae ) which appear to be derived from sewage. Sewage effluents, regardless as to whether they have received primary or secondary treatment, contain huge numbers of NFEs with salinity-tolerant and freshwater strains present in roughly equal quantities. The bacteria are discharged into the rivers and estuaries and carried out to sea. Once in the sea the salinity-tolerant strains retain their viability better than the freshwater strains so that the incoming tide, which doses the sediments, contains mainly salinity-tolerant NFEs. Several pathogenic or opportunistic bacteria have the ability to either induce or inhibit host cell apoptosis. The capacity to modulate cell pathways that result in the induction or delay of host cell apoptosis is considered to be an important bacterial virulence mechanism. These processes could be mediated by different host cell signaling pathways that are subverted by the bacteria. Pathogens are able to activate apoptotic proteins, such as caspases, or inactivate anti-apoptotic proteins, such as NFkB and the MAPKKs, or even up-regulate the endogenous receptor/ligand system that induces apoptosis, generally when the bacteria are bound to the host cell surface. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of plant essential oils (EOs) on the growth of Xanthomonas vesicatoria, on bacterial morphology and ultrastructure, and on the severity of tomato bacterial spot. EOs from citronella, clove, cinnamon, lemongrass, eucalyptus, thyme, and tea tree were evaluated in vitro at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0, 10, and 100% in 1.0% powdered milk. The effect of EOs, at 0.1%, on the severity of tomato bacterial spot was evaluated in tomato seedlings under greenhouse conditions. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a reação das cultivares de soja EMBRAPA 46, EMBRAPA 47, EMBRAPA 48, EMBRAPA 58, EMBRAPA 59, EMBRAPA 60, EMBRAPA 61, EMBRAPA 62, BRS 66, BRS 132, BRS 133, BRS 134, BRS 135, BRS 136, BRS 155, BRS 156, BRS 157, IAC/BR-21, MG/BR-46 (Conquista) e MG/BR-48 (Garimpo RCH) a um isolado de Curtobacterium flaccumfaciens pv. flaccumfaciens, proveniente de feijoeiro, usando dois métodos de inoculação, em casa de vegetação. Foram observados baixos níveis de severidade da doença nas cultivares de soja, independentemente do método de inoculação utilizado.

Merchant ships discharging unwanted marine species in close proximity of a French aquaculture area: Risks involved ArchiMer

The most important oyster farming area in Europe is in a close proximity of two medium size merchant ports. Cargo ships deballast in this area before loading, releasing unwanted or noxious marine species. During a sampling campaign aboard these arriving ships, we found in some ballast water samples a huge number of potentially toxic dinoflagellates and some potentially pathogenic bacteria. A model was applied to find the potential geographical spread of the discharged ballast water. This model predicts the water to reach highly vulnerable shellfish farmed areas in six to eight days.
