Biogas potential of green biomass after protein extraction in an organic biorefinery concept for feed, fuel and fertilizer production Organic Eprints
Santamaria-Fernandez, Maria; Molinuevo-Salces, Beatriz; Lübeck, Mette; Uellendahl, Hinrich.
The biogas potential of the residual fractions of four organically grown green crops after protein extraction was studied. The protein extraction method involved screw pressing of freshly harvested biomass to obtain a plant juice, followed by precipitation of the proteins. After protein extraction, 95% of organic matter was still present in the residual press cake and juice. Methane yields in the range of 219–375 and 429–539 ml-CH4 g-VS−1 were obtained for the mono-digestion of press cake and the residual juice, respectively, and up to 81% of the methane potential of the fresh crops was recovered in the two residual fractions when evaluated separately. Co-digestion of the press cake and the residual juice at the organic matter ratio at which those...

Biokompatible Mauser bei Legehennen Organic Eprints
From an ethical point of view a longer life for laying hens is desired. Then, hens can be used for a longer period and less male chicks would have to be killed at the age of one day. In large flocks of laying hens moulting has to be induced to prevent social instability in the flock. Project aims: A method was investigated in order to moult laying hens without too much stress for the hens. Results, conclusion, state of the art: The chosen method with daily access to a winter garden had no detectable negative effect on the behaviour of the hens. The moulting succeeded in improving egg quality and plumage condition.

Biologisch pluimvee natuurlijk gezond Het stalboekje Pluimvee in de praktijk Organic Eprints
Groot, Maria.

BRAZIL'S NEW FLOATING EXCHANGE RATE REGIME AND COMPETITIVENESS IN THE WORLD POULTRY MARKET AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias.
In early 1999, Brazil devalued its currency, increasing its competitiveness in the poultry industry and capturing world market share. This paper discusses the devaluation and its effects on Brazil's trade, evaluates preliminary statistics on the impact of the devaluation on world poultry markets, and reports the results from a computable general equilibrium (CGE) simulation of the devaluation. The medium-run CGE results are compared to the short-run impacts reflected in the preliminary statistics.

Breast blisters in groups of slow-growing broilers in relation to strain and the availability and use of perches Organic Eprints
Nielsen, Birte L..
1. The relationship between perching behaviour, availability of perches and the incidence and severity of breast blisters in broilers was investigated together with a comparison between two slow-growing broiler strains. 2. Sixteen single strain groups (n=60) of Labresse and i657 broilers were subjected throughout the experiment to one of three perch availabilities: 15 cm per bird (Labresse and i657), 7.5 cm per bird (i657 only), and 0 cm per bird (i657 only) with four replicates per treatment. The birds were housed indoors from day-old, and at 43 days of age 52 birds from each group were moved to outdoor housing facilities with access to grass-covered outdoor areas until slaughter at 84 days of age. 3. The use of perches was monitored via video...

Breeding strategies in poultry for genetic adaptation to the organic environment Organic Eprints
Sørensen, Poul.
Regarding access to breeding material for laying hens to organic egg production the following can be concluded: The breeding material available is genetically adapted to the cage systems. This cage adapted material has a shortcoming regarding behaviour in larger flocks that manifest in: too high tendency to feather pecking and cannibalism, and, independent of flock size, also to many mislaid eggs. Experiments has shown that feather pecking, cannibalism and nesting behaviour can be improved by selection. A search for alternative breeds/hybrids has not yet given the ideal "Organic hen". There seem to be a possibility for adaptation of laying bird to diets with lower crude protein that makes a production possible based on "home grown" crops even in Northern...

Broiler Farms' Organization, Management, and Performance AgEcon
Perry, Janet E.; Banker, David E.; Green, Robert C..
This study provides a comprehensive view of the organization, management, and financial performance of U.S. broiler farms. Using data from USDA's Agricultural Resource Management Study (ARMS, formerly known as the Farm Costs and Returns Survey), we examine farm size, financial structure, household income, management practices, and spousal participation in decision-making. We compare broiler operations with other farming enterprises and their earnings with that of the average U.S. household. Because most of the 7 billion broilers produced in the United States in 1995 were raised under contract, we also explore the use of contracts and the effects of contracting on the broiler sector.

Broiler walking ability and toe asymmetry under harsh rearing conditions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Baracho,MS; Nääs,IA; Bueno,LGF; Nascimento,GR; Moura,DJ.
Morphological asymmetry has been described as a potential broiler welfare indicator, for interpreting the birds' ability to cope with the challenges that may affect its growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of morphological asymmetry data to estimate broiler walking ability and welfare.dBroilers werefed diets supplemented or not with vitamin D. Toes were measured when birds were 42 and 49 days old using digital caliper.the left and right sides of the following four bilateral traits (tarsometatarsus length, outer toe length, mid toe length, and back toe length) were measured twice on intact alive birds by two different researcherh. Data from right and left sides were compared in the two treatments using the Student t-test, and...
