Root and foot rot is economically important disease of peas and is caused by complex of more than 20 different species of soil-borne pathogens. In recent years in Germany, Fusarium avenaceum is emerging as important and devastating pathogen and it is together with several other species, including F. solani, F. oxysporum, F. redolens and Phoma medicaginis among the casual agents of the disease that is commonly referred to as pea root rot complex. In 2012, after severe black frost in February that caused failure of the pea crop, F. avenaceum was isolated in high percentage, 42% of assessed roots. Fusarium Identification by PCR and DON Content in Grain of Ancient Wheat Organic Eprints

Fusarium infestation and DON content were studied in genetic resources of spring wheat (einkorn, emmer wheat, spelt wheat, intermediate forms of bread wheat). The study aimed at the comparison of grain contamination rates in various wheat species being grown in organic farming systems. The trials were established on certified organic parcels in two different localities in the Czech Republic in 2009 and 2010. The PCR method and specific primers were used to detect Fusarium. The proportion of deoxynivalenol (DON) was indicated and measured by the immuno-affinity chromatography (ROSA® DON Quantitative Test). Heterogene Weizenpopulationen als Alternative zu kommerziellen Sorten unter ökologischem Management Organic Eprints

Interest in heterogeneous crop populations is growing within both the scientific community, as well as with organic farmers. In order to ensure widespread acceptance amongst farmers, agronomic testing of currently available composite cross populations (CCPs) under organic management is necessary. Eleven CCPs were compared to five commercially grown varieties in a two-year field experiment under organic management (2016/17 and 2017/18). The results over the two experimental years indicate that CCPs are a viable and interesting alternative to commercial varieties within organic farming systems.

The scarcity of non-renewable resources such as soils and fertilizers and the consequences of climate change can dramatically influence the food security of future generations. Mutualistic root microorganisms such as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can improve plant fitness. We tested the growth response of wheat (Triticum aestivum [L.]), rice (Oriza sativa [L.]) and black gram (Vigna mungo [L.], Hepper) to an inoculation of AMF and PGPR alone or in combination over two years at seven locations in a region extending from the Himalayan foothills to the Indo-Gangetic plain. Inter-row cultivation for mechanical weed control in winter oilseed rape Organic Eprints

This E-learning unit provides information on non-chemical weed control for winter oilseed rape. The presentation suggests inter-row cultivation as a weeding strategy for this crop. The tool is a powerpoint presentation that goes through the various requirements to use inter-row cultivation as well as proper timing for weed control. Challenges with this method of weed control are also discussed. The tool is not specific for organic farmers but may be used by farmers and crop advisors looking for alternatives to herbicide use. Mit repellenten Duftstoffen gegen den Rapsglanzkäfer (Labortests) (Video) Organic Eprints

Der Rapsglanzkäfer ist ein kleiner Schädling, der zum grossen Ärgernis werden kann. Wenn er im Frühjahr in die Kulturen einfällt, zerbeisst er die Blütenknospen und kann schnell grossen Schaden anrichten. Die Käfer orientieren sich beim Einflug in die Felder am typischen Rapsgeruch. Fremde Gerüche haben dabei eine abschreckende Wirkung auf die Käfer. Kann man diese Gerüche eventuell nutzen, um die Käfer wirksam aus den Feldern zu vertreiben? Und wie findet man den abschreckendsten Geruch? Dank finanzieller Unterstützung der Migros konnten Laborversuche in einem Olfaktometer durchgeführt werden, die genau diese Fragen beantwortet sollten. Im Video erklärt Claudia Daniel vom FiBL, wie ein Olfaktometer funktioniert.

The purpose of this tool is to advise farmers and crop advisors on modifications that can be made to sowing time in winter wheat based cropping systems that reduce weed, disease and pest pressures. This is for systems where there are reduced use of pesticides. Das Projekt war mit Untersuchungen zum wirtschaftlichen Status der neuen Viruserkrankung PNYDV (Pea necrotic yellow dwarf virus) in Erbsen (Pisum sativum L.) und Ackerbohnen (Vicia faba L.) befasst. An drei Standorten der Projektpartner Universität Kassel-FÖP, JKI Braunschweig und TI-OL Trenthorst wurden ferndiagnostische Verfahren zur Früherkennung und Schadenserfassung auf Praxisflächen und im Parzellenversuch erprobt. Bei Ackerbohnen wurden die Reflektionsmuster einzelner infizierter Pflanzen im Vergleich zu unsymptomatischen Kontrollpflanzen vermessen. Résumé La culture de colza bio en Suisse ne permet pas de couvrir la demande du marché. Cela est, en partie, dû au fait que cette culture est chaque année attaquée par les méligèthes du colza qui engendrent d’importants dégâts voir des destructions totales. Les moyens de lutte mis à disposition des agriculteurs en agriculture biologique sont relativement restreints. De plus, aucun d’eux n’a, à l’heure actuelle, démontré une grande efficacité. Dans le canton de Vaud, M. Roulin produit du colza bio avec un rendement moyen avoisinant les 30 dt/ha. Essential oils can have an impact on pollen beetle (Meligethes spp.) host plant location behaviour. Lavender oil (Lavendula angustifolia) showed the highest repellency value in a previous laboratory study that compared five different essential oils (Mauchline et al., 2005). However, lavender oil is one of the most expensive essential oils – a fact that could seriously hamper on-farm implementation of this strategy. Pea necrotic yellow dwarf virus (PNYDV) ist ein neuer Nanovirus in Mitteleurope, der verschiedene Leguminosen befällt und persistent durch Blattläuse übertragen wird. In dieser on-farm Studie untersuchten wir sechs Ackerbohnen-Felder mit PNYDV-symptomatischen Nestern mittels multispektraler Drohnen-Aufnahmen, die mit ground-truth Pflanzenwachstumsparametern korreliert werden. Symptomatische Pflanzen zeigten einen signifikanten Rückgang der Sprosslänge, oberirdische Trockenmasse, Hülsenzahl sowie Anzahl und Trockenmasse N-fixierender Wurzelknöllchen.
