Effect of annual self-reseeding legumes on subsequent crops in organic rotation programme Organic Eprints
Al-Bitar, Lina.
Soil fertility management is a critical issue in organic agriculture, and nitrogen supply is the most important aspect, especially in the Mediterranean region. Biological nitrogen fixation by legumes seems to be a successful strategy in that nitrogen-fixing legumes can provide most of the nitrogen used in Mediterranean agriculture in a form not readily leached. According to Pimentel et al., 1992, in the U.S., an estimated $50 billion worth of nitrogen is provided by biological N fixation. Thus, the inputs of nitrogen into Mediterranean agricultural systems by biological fixation in nodulated legumes are fundamental to obtain sustainable and economic production. This study aimed at evaluating the impact of annual self-reseeding legumes on subsequent crops...

Sensory, yield and quality differences between organically and conventionally grown winter wheat Organic Eprints
Arncken, Christine; Mäder, Paul; Mayer, Jochen; Weibel, Franco P..
BACKGROUND: Consumers expect organic produce to have higher environmental, health and sensory related qualities than conventional produce. In order to test sensory differences between bio-dynamically, bio-organically and conventionally grown winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Runal), we performed double-blinded triangle tests with two panels on dry wholemeal flour from the harvest years 2006, 2007 and 2009 and from two field replicates of the ‘DOK’ long-term farming system comparison field trial near Basel, Switzerland. Yield and quality parameters were also assessed. RESULTS: Significant farming system effects were found for yield (up to 42% reduction in the organic system), thousand kernel weight, hectolitre weight and crude protein content across...

Performance of spring barley varieties and variety mixtures as affected by manure application and their order in an organic crop rotation Organic Eprints
Askegaard, M.; Thomsen, I.K.; Berntsen, J.; Hovmøller, M.S.; Kristensen, K..
In order to obtain a high and stable yield of organic spring barley, production should be optimized according to the specific environment. To test the performance of spring barley varieties under varying cropping conditions, a field experiment was carried out in 2003 and 2004 in a six-field mixed organic crop rotation. We investigated the choice of variety, the order in a rotation, and the application of manure (slurry and farm yard manure; 0 to 120 total-Nha1) on grain yields of six selected varieties with different characteristics grown in either pure stands or in two spring barley mixtures, each consisting of three varieties. Average grain yield of the barley varieties varied between 3.3 t DM ha-1 and 4.1 t DM ha-1. Grain yields of the two...

Performance of spring barley in an organic mixed crop rotation Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Margrethe; Støvring, Mogens; Berntsen, Jørgen.
A two-year field experiment with spring barley in an organic mixed crop rotation showed contrasting results between the two years in the response to the tested factors: Variety, location in the crop rotation, and organic manure application. The yields of the varieties differed due to attacks of different airborne leaf diseases. In one of the years the “high fertility” position of the barley the 1st year after grass-clover gave unexpectedly lower grain yields than the position four years after grass-clover. Finally, the straw-based farmyard manure (FYM) resulted in higher grain yields in one of the years whereas slurry performed best in the other year, though the content of ammonia-N was less in FYM both years. We measured differences in the root...

Legume catch crops for reducing N leaching and substituting animal manure Organic Eprints
Askegaard, Senior scientist Margrethe; Eriksen, Senior scientist Jørgen.
Organic cereal production on coarse sandy soil is a challenge because of low soil fertility and a general limitation on the use of animal manure. The possible exclusion of conventional animal manure in organic crop production increases the challenge further. Two factorial experiments were carried out aiming at investigating the potential of legume catch crops with respect to residual effects and effects on N leaching. Legume catch crops were compared with non-legume catch crops in systems with spring barley as the main crop each year. Grain yields were determined and N leaching losses measured by means of installed ceramic suction cups. The legume catch crops, especially white clover and red clover, showed large residual effects in succeeding spring...

Bio-economic analysis of dual-purpose management of winter cereals in high and low input production systems Organic Eprints
Ates, S.; Cicek, H.; Gultekin, I.; Yigezu, Y. A.; Keser, M.; Filley, S. J..
Dual-purpose (DP) management of cereals holds promise to reduce the feed gap and to better integrate crop and livestock systems especially in drylands where forage deficit is severe. However, there is limited information on which cereal species and type of management would be most optimal for both forage and grain production in dry highland environments. A two-year field study (2013–2015) in the Central Anatolian plateau of Turkey investigated the effect of spring defoliation of barley, triticale and wheat varieties at tillering and stem elongation stages and a no-cut (grain-based) system under low- and high-input management on yield and quality of forage, straw and grain. Overall, barley had greater (P < 0.01) forage DM accumulation within the...

Investigations on crude protein and amino acids in organically produced field pea (Pisum sativum L.) varieties Organic Eprints
Aulrich, Karen; Böhm, Herwart; Witten, Stephanie.
The content of essential amino acids in grain legumes is of special interest for monogastric animal feeding in organic farming. Therefore, we investigated the influence of variety on the contents of crude protein (CP) and amino acids (AA) as well as the relation between CP and AA in field peas. Samples of 73 peas of 5 varieties (Alvesta, Auckland, KWS La Manscha, Navarro, Salamanca) were collected from field trials of organically managed experimental sites in Germany in 2011 - 2013. The contents of CP and AA were analyzed with NIRS. Pearson correlation analyses and mixed procedures were conducted in SAS 9.4. Variety affected CP and AA in peas. Alvesta had the lowest content of CP (21%) and almost all AA per kg dry matter (p < 0.001). KWS La Manscha...

Agronomic performances of self-reseeding legumes on alkaline soil under Mediterranean climate Organic Eprints
Ayoub, Dr. Mohamed.
Self-reseeding legumes are an essential component of the Mediterranean natural resources. Germplasms collected from the Mediterranean region were introduced in Australia and subjected to an extensive breeding. Species were then re-introduced in their original habitat where they were object of different important researches. Despite all the efforts made to select appropriate species and varieties, well-adapted cultivars have not been yet identified for all situations. At the experimental farm of the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari, Italy, agronomic performances of 15 cultivars of self reseeding legumes were compared on an alkaline soil to evaluate their possible use in organic agriculture systems. 10-m2 plots were used in a complete randomised...

Effect of Seeding Date of Wheat and Clover Plant Interactions in Cereal Systems with an Associated Cover Crop Organic Eprints
Baresel, Jörg Peter; Köckeis, M.; Weiner, J..
The success of the establishment of living mulch systems in cereals is, among other factors, dependent on the seeding time both of the main crop and the associated crop, which may be planted together or at different seeding times. In this contribution, the results of a series of experiments are summarized, where both the absolute and the relative seeding time of winter wheat as main crop and subterranean clover as associated crop has been varied. Early seeding favored the clover, later seeding the main crop. Competition can be regulated by anticipating the seeding time of one of the components. However, an equilibrated mixed canopy could be obtained by seeding both components together.
