Economic Analysis of Menthol Mint Cultivation in Uttar Pradesh: A Case Study of Barabanki District AgEcon
Kumar, Sanjay; Suresh, Ram; Singh, Virendra; Singh, A.K..
The present study has been carried out in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh on economic analysis of menthol mint cultivation in the year 2010. The economics has been worked out by comparing costs and returns at different stages by the conventional method. The linear production function has been fitted to evaluate the resources-use efficiency in the production of menthol mint. The study has shown that the major portion of operational cost is shared by hired labour, interculture operations, distillation charges, irrigation and machine / tractor charge. The overall benefit-cost ratio has been found to be 2.55, which indicates a higher profit for farmers on less investment in mint cultivation. The independent variables like human labour, machinery,...

Management of Volatility in the Grain Market AgEcon
Guenther-Luebbers, Welf; Henke, Soren; Theuvsen, Ludwig.
Food prices have steadily risen since the 1990s, and price were especially volatile in the years 2008 and 2010. This trend has also been reflected in the European grain market, which presents all European companies along the food value chain with new challenges. This paper focuses on the impacts of increased price volatility on the grain market. Furthermore, it describes and evaluates government interventions attempting to reduce this volatility. At the same time, it describes and assesses private management methods of dealing with price volatility. In this article, we provide an opportunity to understand how the European cereals market evolved to reach its present state and suggest future possible price assurance systems, such as insurance for the basic...

Investigating Changes in Canadian Consumers' Food Safety Concerns, 2003 and 2005 AgEcon
Veeman, Michele M.; Li, Yu.
Building on the results of an initial analysis of risk ranking data collected from a representative group of some 850 Canadian respondents in early 2003, this study assesses a similar set of risk ranking questions applied to a somewhat larger representative group of some 1500 Canadians in late 2005. We also compare the 2003 and 2005 risk rankings. In both surveys, risk rankings for eight food safety issues (bacteria contamination, pesticide residuals, use of hormones in food production, use of antibiotics in food production, BSE (mad cow disease), food additives, use of genetic modification/engineering in food production, fat and cholesterol in food) and six environmental safety issues (water pollution by chemical run-offs from agriculture, soil...

Fallstudie zur Entwicklung der Landwirtschaft in einem benachteiligten Gebiet ohne Ausgleichszula-ge am Beispiel zweier Landkreise im Westharz (Niedersachsen) AgEcon
Pitsch, Marion; Gasmi, Samy.

Evaluation of the effects of changes in regulatory policies on consumers perception: the case of designations of origin in the wine common market organisation AgEcon
Chiodo, Emilio; Casolani, Nicola; Fantini, Andrea.
The paper analyses how different aspects connected with regulations can influence the consumers’ quality perception and the value that consumers attribute to the wine sector products. In particular, aspects concerning labelling and presentation of designations of origin, which, in turn, mirror different regulations of production methods, are considered. Consumers’ preference can allow enterprises to complying with more restrictive rules and sustain higher costs for differentiate their products and achieve higher quality. When choosing a product, consumers do not evaluate each single quality factor but the product as a whole, therefore the analysis has to be done with a methodology considering both the combination of all characteristics of the product, and...

GOVERNING STRUCTURAL CHANGE AND EXTERNALITIES IN AGRICULTURE: TOWARD A NORMATIVE INSTITUTIONAL ECONOMICS OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Petrick, Martin.
The paper aims at a conceptual contribution to the normative economic analysis of rural de-velopment (RD) policies. RD is regarded as a problem of interaction between individuals; (lacking) structural change or the (missing) integration of externalities are therefore recon-structed as coordination rather than allocation problems. A social dilemma is taken as the paradigmatic core of normative institutional economics: how can potential gains from coop-eration be realised by way of institutional policy? Starting from a critique of the hitherto dominating welfare economics conception, three principles for institutional policy are de-rived: (1) the realisation of gains from cooperation as the normative, regulative idea, (2) in-centive-compatible...

STRUCTURAL CHANGE AND FARM LABOUR ADJUSTMENTS IN A DUALISTIC FARM STRUCTURE: A SIMULATION STUDY FOR THE REGION NITRA IN SOUTHWEST SLOVAKIA AgEcon
Schnicke, Hauke Joachim; Happe, Kathrin; Sahrbacher, Christoph.
This Discussion Paper explores interactions between structural impediments to labour adjustment, specific labour adjustment patterns and the impacts of differing economical and political frames. Based on the agent-based simulation framework AgriPoliS adjusted to the agricultural structure of the region Nitra in southwest Slovakia, we carry out a range of simulation experiments on the possible interplay between off-farm job opportunities for farm operators, growth in other sectors of the economy, and policy impacts. Results show that free movement of labour between sectors leads to strong adjustments in the agricultural labour force and benefits farms with a growth potential. EU Accession and a subsequent decoupling of payments lead farms to stay in...
