Checklist of tidepool fishes from Jericoacoara National Park, southwestern Atlantic, with additional ecological information Biota Neotropica

Ichthyofauna from 29 tidepools in Jericoacoara National Park (Ceará State, Brazil) was sampled. A total of 733 fishes, comprising 16 species belonging to 12 families, was collected. The three most abundant species were the frillfin goby Bathygobius soporator, the sergeant-majorAbudefduf saxatilis and the molly miller Scartella cristata. An invasive species from the Indo-Pacific, the Muzzled blenny Omobranchus punctatus, was also recorded. The known geographic distribution of the blenny Hypleurochilus fissicornis was extended approximately 2,500 km northward. These findings highlight the lack of knowledge of the rocky intertidal ecosystems along the Brazilian coast, an area that needs more sampling effort and ecological data.

Protection of marine benthic habitats in the Pacific islands. A case study of Guam ArchiMer

Guam consists of a single main island surrounded by shallow fringing coral reefs. The marine species and ecology of Guam's coral reefs have been studied extensively, especially through programs of the University of Guam's Marine Laboratory. In addition to overfishing and destructive fishing practices, the marine benthic communities of Guam have been damaged by major storm waves; loss of corals to crown of thorns starfish predation; damage by recreational swimmers, divers and watercraft operators; grounding of ships and pollutant discharges of sewage and of stormwater. Reef-building species are recognized as having an important ecological role and as generally enhancing the diversity of benthic organisms in marine habitats. However, although these ecosystem engineers have a facilitating role for some species, they may exclude or compete with others. The honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata (Linnaeus, 1767) is an important foundation species, commonly found from northwest Ireland to northern Mauritania, whose reef structures increase the physical complexity of the marine benthos, supporting high levels of biodiversity. Adaptations to hard substrates in Pennsylvanian productides (Brachiopoda) from the Cantabrian mountains (North-West Spain) Naturalis

The Pennsylvanian deposits with carbonate platforms and reef structures from the Cantabrian Mountains are briefly described. The main portion of this paper is dedicated to the discussion of the adaptations of the Productidina from these Pennsylvanian formations of the Cantabrian Mountains to their life on hard substrates, comparing them with similar forms found elsewhere, notably in the Mississippian of northwest Europe and the Permian of Texas. In the systematic part, an indeterminate Plicatiferini is described as well as a new genus, Bruntonoconcha, and the new species Limbifera bruntoni, Parmephrix candemuelensis and Bruntonoconcha celadensis.

The role of Spain in the development of the reef Brachiopod faunas during the Carboniferous Naturalis

After a short introduction on the reef development during the Late Palaeozoic, the tectono-stratigraphic history of the Cantabrian Mountains (northern Spain) during the Carboniferous is discussed, with an emphasis on the tectonically active Pennsylvanian (i.e., Late Carboniferous). The reef-bearing Valdeteja, San Emiliano, and Cuera formations are briefly described, and their brachiopod faunas are discussed with special emphasis on adaptations to a reef environment. The brachiopod faunas are compared with similar faunas from carbonate-platform deposits with reef structures of Mississippian (i.e., Early Carboniferous) age from Northwest Europe (the British Isles in particular), with Pennsylvanian-Permian faunas from the Alps, Urals, Spitsbergen and Arctic...
