Dynamical contribution to sea surface salinity variations in the eastern Gulf of Guinea based on numerical modelling ArchiMer

In this study, we analyse the seasonal variability of the sea surface salinity (SSS) for two coastal regions of the Gulf of Guinea from 1995 to 2006 using a high resolution model (1/12°) embedded in a Tropical Atlantic (1/4°) model. Compared with observations and climatologies, our model demonstrates a good capability to reproduce the seasonal and spatial variations of the SSS and mixed layer depth. Sensitivity experiments are carried out to assess the respective impacts of precipitations and river discharge on the spatial structure and seasonal variations of the SSS in the eastern part of the Gulf of Guinea. Economic benefit and costs of tree planting for salinity control AgEcon

This study reviewed case studies and research focussed on the issues of managing native vegetation, the problems of salinity and the relationship between the two. It then addressed the economic feasibility of six tree planting configurations to reduce the impacts of salinity. The method used a spreadsheet model showing the benefits and costs of various planting configurations over a 30-year time span. This model can be used to assess the monetary net benefit/costs of reducing recharge of a vegetation management proposal. Inputs can be varied to tailor the model to different catchments. Nicotiana glauca, a shrub native to southern South America, is widely distributed in the Americas, from Patagonia to the USA, from zero up to 3,700 m; it rapidly invades disturbed environments. In Venezuela, it has been reported from zero up to 2,000 m growing in contrasting conditions of relative humidity, temperature, rainfall, and salinity. This study was conducted to determine the optimal salinity for the culture of H. reidi fry during the first month of life, evaluating the effect of different salinities (27, 30, 33, and 36) on its growth and survival. The fry were distributed at three ind.L-1 density in 12 L incubators, animals were fed ad libitum throughout the experiment, survival was monitored daily, and height and weight were measured both at the beginning and end of the experiment. The salinity did not show significant differences between treatments, the highest survival rate was obtained at 27 with 17.59 ± 6.99%.

La tolerancia y supervivencia de los camarones a las variaciones de salinidad están estrechamente relacionadas con los mecanismos de osmorregulación. Diversos trabajos en peces y mamíferos, describen la importancia de los ácidos grasos altamente insaturados (HUFA) en la permeabilidad de las membranas y otros procesos relacionados con la osmorregulación. Efectos del aporte fluvial en la salinidad y los nutrientes del Golfo de Guacanayabo, Cuba, en meses lluviosos de 2008 y 2009 OceanDocs

Muestreos realizados en meses lluviosos de los años 2008 y 2009 manifiestan influencia de aguas dulces en la salinidad del Golfo de Guacanayabo, registrándose valores promedios de 34,9 y 33,6 ‰, respectivamente. Elementos no conservativos como el SiO3, el P-PO4- y el N-NH4+ manifiestan una tendencia al incremento a medida que disminuye la salinidad presentándose correlaciones negativas significativas (α<0,05), corroborando la importancia de los escurrimientos fluviales en el aporte de nutrientes. Los bajos coeficientes de correlación denotan otras fuentes de aporte. En comparación con registros anteriores se observan disminuciones en los SiO3, incrementos del P-PO4- y una variabilidad con tendencia ascendente-descendente en los compuestos nitrogenados.

Efeito da salinidade na germinação e vigor de sementes de melão. Repositório Alice

Avaliaram-se a germinação e o vigor de sementes de melão (Cucumis melo L.), sob condicoes de ripado, utilizando-se solos com diferentes concentrações salinas. Observou-se que a germinação das sementes manteve-se inalterada ate o nível de 6,27 mmho/cm de condutividade elétrica, enquanto o seu vigor foi afetado por níveis inferiores. Níveis mais altos de salinidade exerceram efeitos bem pronunciados na germinação ao nível de CE 25oC= 9,46 mmho/cm, uma redução superior a 50% e no vigor, uma drástica redução.

Este trabalho foi um levantamento dos efeitos da dejecao de dois sistemas de dessalinizacao por osmose inversa (RO) de agua de pocos, sobre o solo, localizados nas comunidades de Rajada e Uruas, no municipio de Petrolina-PE. Nessas comunidades estudadas, bem como em todas as comunidades do semi-arido brasileiro, os rejeitos da dessalinizacao sao despejados em sistemas de drenagem natural, sem nenhum tratamento, podendo causar danos ao solo e meio ambiente devido aos seus elevados teores de sais.

Efeitos do alumínio e da salinidade na germinação de sementes de arroz-bravo (Oryza sp). Repositório Alice

No presente trabalho são analisados os efeitos do alumínio e da salinidade na germinação de sementes de arroz-bravo (Oryza sp.). A germinação foi monitorada em períodos de 15 dias. Os resultados indicaram que o alumínio, na faixa de 0,0 a 2,0 meq/100 ml, não afetou a germinação das sementes. A germinação respondeu de forma quadrática à variação da salinidade no intervalo de O a 300 mM. Os decréscimos na germinação foram mais intensos a partir da concentração de 75 mM, sendo que na concentração de 300 mM do sal, as sementes não germinaram.

Soil samples with undisturbed structure were collected and placed in containers where levels polymaleic acid (0, 10, 20 and 30L/ha) were applied diluted water, in order to raise the moisture up to field capacity. Effect of salinity on the oxygen consumption of larvae of the silversides Odontesthes hatcheri and O. bonariensis (Osteichthyes, Atherinopsidae) BABT

Starved larvae of the silversides O. hatcheri (2- and 5-days-old) and Odontesthes bonariensis (5-days-old) were used to compare the oxygen consumption rates at 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30 ppt salinity. Oxygen consumption of O. hatcheri and O. bonariensis was minimal at 0 and 10 ppt, respectively, salinities close to those encountered in areas inhabited by these fishes. In both species, oxygen consumption rates thereafter increased with increasing salinity, and then abruptly decreased at 30 ppt. Lower consumption at extreme salinities might be a result of reduced activity, which in itself was salinity-modulated. Germination percentage, seedling fresh weight and sensitivity index of the pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Sera Demre) seed lots harvested 50, 60 and 70 days after the anthesis (daa) in 2001 and 2002 were determined under the salt (NaCl) and osmotic (PEG) stresses at the same water potentials of -0.3, -0.6 and -0.9 MPa. Effect of seawater salinity on pore-size distribution on a poly(styrene)-based HP20 resin and its adsorption of diarrhetic shellfish toxins ArchiMer

In the present study, okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1) were spiked into artificial seawater at low, medium and high estuarine salinities (9‰, 13.5‰ and 27‰). Passive samplers (HP20 resin) used for solid phase adsorption toxin tracking (SPATT) technology were exposed in these seawaters for12-h periods. Adsorption curves well fitted a pseudo-secondary kinetics model. The highest initial sorption rates of both toxins occurred in the seawater of medium salinity, followed by seawater of low and high estuarine salinity. ABSTRACT Salinity is an important abiotic factor since it is responsible for the local and/or regional distribution of algae. In coastal regions, salinity changes with prevailing winds, precipitation and tide, and particularly in extreme intertidal conditions. Acanthophora spicifera is a red seaweed that occurs in the supratidal region in which changes in abiotic conditions occur frequently. One of the limiting factors in aquaculture is mortality outbreaks, which may limit oyster production, and the causes of these outbreaks are not completely understood.
