Factors affecting biochemical composition of seston in an eutrophic reservoir (Pampulha Reservoir, Belo Horizonte, MG BJB
BOËCHAT,I. G.; GIANI,A..
Sestonic biochemical composition (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) may change with varying environmental fluctuations. These changes and the effects in the nutritional status of algae consists of an actual increasing source of interest. The aims of this work were to establish the relationship between biochemical composition of seston and 1) a range of physical, chemical and climatological factors, and 2) the natural fluctuation in the species composition in phytoplankton assemblages of the Pampulha Reservoir, an urban eutrophic lake located in Belo Horizonte, MG. Seasonal changes in the biochemical composition were observed in this study. None of the considered abiotic factors alone seem to affect the biochemical composition. So the effects could only...

Fauna and stratification of male orchid bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and their preference for odor baits in a forest fragment Neotropical Entomology
Ferreira,MG; Pinho,OC de; Balestieri,JBP; Faccenda,O.
This is a study of the population fluctuation of euglossine species, as well as their preferences for scent baits (cineole, eugenol, vanillin and methyl salicylate) in two forest strata (canopy and understory) at the Reserva Florestal do Azulão, a forest fragment located in the municipality of Dourados, MS, Brazil (22°12'S, 54°55'W). We collected a total of 529 males from four genera and eight species. Diversity and equitability for both strata (understory: H' = 1.195 and J' = 0.6139; canopy: H' = 1.193 and J' = 0.6131) did not show a significant difference and a high similarity index was found (P = 87.5%). On the other hand, abundance was substantially higher in the canopy (n = 358) than in the understory (n = 171). From the scents used, eugenol attracted...

Feeding dynamics of Cichla kelberi Kullander & Ferreira, 2006 introduced into an artificial lake in southeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Villares Junior,Gilberto Aparecido; Gomiero,Leandro Muller.
The objective of this study was to characterize the seasonally of the diet of Cichla kelberi in an artificial lake in Leme-SP, determining the food items and their relation to the sex and gonadal maturity of the fish sampled. The diet of C. kelberi presents a dynamic in three different periods: winter months were characterized by low feeding activity and a high concentration of undetermined fish; increase in feeding activity occurred in the spring, with Tilapia sp. being the dominant food item; and a high rate of cannibalism was observed in the summer and early fall. The plasticity in the composition of the diet was marked by quantity of prey available during the different periods of the year, and the reproductive period.

Feeding ecology of Phalloceros anisophallos (Osteichthyes: Cyprinodontiformes) from Andorinha Stream, Ilha Grande, Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Mazzoni,Rosana; Araújo,Raphaella Rangel da Silva; Santos,Gardênia Carolina Tosta dos; Iglesias-Rios,Ricardo.
In the present work, we determined the relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous food items as well as seasonal and ontogenetic variation in the feeding habits of Phalloceros anisophallos from córrego Andorinha, Ilha Grande. Quantitative analysis, based on alimentary index (IAi) and food volume (Vo), revealed that P. anisophallos fed on detritus, autochthonous algae (diatoms, unicellular and filamentous Chlorophyceae algae), autochthonous animals (aquatic insect larvae: Trichoptera, Chironomidae and other Diptera) and allochthonous animals (terrestrial insects: Hymenoptera). Ontogenetic variations were recorded for the consumption of each food category. Adults used a larger amount of algae and detritus, and juveniles used a higher amount of...

Feeding habit of the Brazilian tapir, Tapirus terrestris (Perissodactyla: Tapiridae) in a vegetation transition zone in south-eastern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Talamoni,Sônia A.; Assis,Miguel A. C..
Tapirs are considered generalist herbivores and the differences in the proportions of dietary items are often attributed to differences in the habitats where individuals live. This study characterized the feeding habit of Tapirus terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758) in a nature reserve in south-eastern Brazil, located in a region considered a transition zone between the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) and the Atlantic Forest biomes. Fecal samples from T. terrestris individuals were collected monthly at six sampling areas that encompassed a total of 242.22 ha. There were 147 fresh samples found (77 during the dry season and 70 during the wet season). The diet of the tapirs in this reserve was characterized by the prevalent browsing on leaves and stems. There was a low...

Fenologia da copaíba (Copaifera langsdorffii Desf. -- Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae) em uma floresta semidecídua no sudeste do Brasil Rev. Bras. Bot.
PEDRONI,FERNANDO; SANCHEZ,MARYLAND; SANTOS,FLAVIO A.M..

Fine root biomass and root length density in a lowland and a montane tropical rain forest, SP, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Rosado,Bruno Henrique Pimentel; Martins,Amanda Cristina; Colomeu,Talita Cristina; Oliveira,Rafael Silva; Joly,Carlos Alfredo; Aidar,Marcos Pereira Marinho.
Fine roots, <2 mm in diameter, are responsible for water and nutrient uptake and therefore have a central role in carbon, nutrient and water cycling at the plant and ecosystem level. The root length density (RLD), fine root biomass (FRB) and vertical fine root distribution (VRD) in the soil profile have been used as good descriptors of resource-use efficiency and carbon storage in the soil. Along altitudinal gradients, decreases in temperature and radiation inputs (depending on the frequency of fog events) may reduce decomposition rates and nutrient availability what might stimulate plants to invest in fine roots, increasing acquisition of resources. We evaluated the seasonal variation of fine root parameters in a Lowland and Montane forest at the...

Fine-root production in two secondary forest sites with distinct ages in Eastern Amazon Acta Amazonica
Lima,Tâmara Thaiz Santana; Miranda,Izildinha Souza; Vasconcelos,Steel Silva.
The objective of this work was to assess the fine-root (≤ 2 mm diameter) production dynamics of two forest regrowths at different ages. Fine-root production was monitored by the ingrowth core method in one 18-year-old site (2 ha) and one 10-year-old site (0.5 ha), both localized in the Apeú region, Northern Pará State, Brazil. The sites were abandoned after successive shifting cultivation, beginning in 1940. Monthly production of live fine-root was similar between sites and was influenced by rainfall seasonality, with higher production during the dry season than the wet season for mass and length. However, mortality in terms of mass was higher in the 10-year-old site than in the 18-year-old site. The seasonality influenced mortality only in the 18-year old...

Fish passage post-construction issues: analysis of distribution, attraction and passage efficiency metrics at the Baguari Dam fish ladder to approach the problem Neotropical Ichthyology
Silva,Luiz Gustavo Martins da; Nogueira,Lorena Bettinelli; Maia,Bruno Pereira; Resende,Lucas Borges de.
Fish passages are considered the oldest management tool used to minimize the impact of blocking fish migratory routes by hydroelectric power plants. However, fish passages are being installed without specific criteria in Brazil, with severe consequences to the conservation of the local fish fauna. Therefore, basic data gathered for fish passages already constructed could contribute to define operational rules, in addition to offer subsidies to decision-making and design of future facilities. Thus, the fish ladder of Baguari Dam was evaluated regarding temporal distribution, attraction, and ascension of the local fish fauna. A total of 20 fish samples were conducted immediately downstream of the dam and inside the fish ladder, from January 2010 to June...

Flow structure and seasonalityin the Hebridean slope current ArchiMer
Souza, Aj; Simpson, Jh; Harikrishnan, M; Malarkey, J.
The intensity, structure and variability of the slope current have been determined from 16 months of observations with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) and conventional current meters on a cross-slope section at the Hebridean shelf edge during the Shelf Edge Study (SES) programme. After removal of the tidal signals, the mean flow over the upper slope is found to be closely parallel to the topography with speeds of . 20 cmEs.1. The flow extends down to a depth of 500 m and is predominantly barotropic, especially in winter when the flow is practically uniform between 350 m and the surface. In summer, there is a significant baroclinic component with a pronounced maximum in current at a depth of about 200 m but more than 80% of the kinetic energy is...

Flower Power at the Dutch Flower Auctions? Application of an Inverse Almost Ideal Demand System AgEcon
Steen, Marie.
Information on price-quantity relationships will enable flower producers to reduce risk and raise profits through better timing of rotations as well as better utilization of limited greenhouse space. The present paper presents econometric evidence on such price-quantity relationships for major species of cut flowers at the Dutch flower auctions. Specifically, an inverse linear approximate almost ideal demand model with seasonal adjustments is applied. This paper is introducing trigonometric functions as a flexible and inexpensive alternative that outperforms standard seasonal dummies. Major findings are that all flexibilities (quantity elasticities) are strongly significant. Own price flexibilities are negative as expected. The own flexibilities vary...

Flux dynamics of planktic foraminiferal tests in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay (northeast Atlantic margin) ArchiMer
Kuhnt, Tanja; Howa, Helene; Schmidt, Sabine; Marie, Louis; Schiebel, Ralf.
The temporal and water depth related dynamics of planktic foraminiferal fluxes in the south-eastern Bay of Biscay are discussed for a two year sampling period (June 2006-June 2008). Two sediment traps deployed at 800 m and 1700 m water depth at a mooring in 2000 m of water depth, were analyzed for the flux of planktic foraminiferal species >150 mu m, in comparison with the total mass flux. Total flux of planktic foraminifera shows seasonal maxima in spring/early summer (>2000 Ind.m(-2) d(-1)) and minima from late summer through winter (<10 Ind.m(-2) d(-1)). The flux of planktic foraminiferal tests in the intermediate to deep water column at the inner Bay of Biscay comprises an intermittent and regionally variable signal of seasonal surface water...

Follicular-Stromal Interaction in Mare Ovary During the Reproductive Cycle International Journal of Morphology
Smok S,Carolina; Rojas R,Mariana.
Ovogenesis and foliculogenesis in the mare differ from other farm animals and therefore, gamete manipulation, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer have been very difficult. The histologic traits of ovaries from 12 mares, in estrus and diestrus were studied. Number and size of follicules and corpora lutea were recorded. The ovarian stroma was evaluated using the pricosirius technique for collagen. A simple morphometric analysis was done using computerized scanner programs. During late estrus, one dominant follicle (46 ± 4mm) is seen. The surrounding stroma contains collagen I and III. By the end of the estrus, one hemorrhagic follicle is seen, plus one or two small follicle (2 mm in size). In early diestrus there is a corpus luteum (43-60 mm) and some...

Forecasting Corn Futures Volatility in the Presence of Long Memory, Seasonality and Structural Change AgEcon
Wang, Xiaoyang; Garcia, Philip.
Price volatility in the corn market has changed considerably globalization and stronger linkages to the energy complex. Using data from January 1989 through December 2009, we estimate and forecast the volatility in the corn market using futures daily prices. Estimates in a Fractional Integrated GARCH framework identify the importance of long memory, seasonality, and structural change. Recursively generated forecasts for up to 40-day horizons starting in January 2005 highlight the importance of seasonality, and long memory specifications which perform well at more distant horizons particularly with rising volatility. The forecast benefits of allowing for structural change in an adaptive framework are more difficult to identify except at more distant...

Geographical and seasonal distributions of the seedeaters Sporophila bouvreuil and Sporophila pileata (aves: Emberizidae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Machado,Érika; Silveira,Luís Fábio.
Many species in the genus Sporophila are migratory. Migration patterns, while poorly studied, may be influenced by seed production which can be very seasonal in some regions. The distribution of S. bouvreuil extends from the Amazon and Suriname south through a large part of the open regions of Brazil. Sporophila pileata, on the other hand, is found in southeastern and southern Brazil as well as Argentina and Paraguay. Both of these species migrate, but their movement patterns are poorly known. To better understand the geographical and the seasonal distributions of S. bouvreuil and S. pileata, we grouped the records into two categories: the breeding season (September to March) and the putative migration season (April to August). We found two areas of...
