Holocene variation in the Antarctic coastal food web: linking δD and δC13 in snow petrel diet and marine sediments ArchiMer
Ainley, Dg; Hobson, Ka; Crosta, X; Rau, Gh; Wassenaar, Li; Augustinus, Pc.
Here we present first time evidence for concordant variation in the isotopic signature at both the base and the upper levels of the Antarctic coastal food web during the Holocene. Laminae in sub-fossil deposits of snow petrel Pagodroina nivea stomach oil, known as mumiyo, were collected from nest-sites in the Bunger Hills, East Antarctica. Mumiyo layers were sub-sampled, radiocarbondated, and analyzed for delta C-13 and delta D. The obtained values were compared to isotopic variability among layers of an ocean sediment core collected, and similarly dated, in nearby Dumont D'Urville Trough. Overlapping records extended from about 10 160 to 526 calendar years before present (cal yr BP). Mumiyo delta D values remained relatively constant throughout the...

Tracking Indian monsoon variability from changes in sediment provenance ArchiMer
Awasthi, Neeraj; Ray, Jyotiranjan S.
Terrestrial and marine sediments preserved on the Indian sub-continent and in seas/oceans around it are excellent archives for studying and reconstructing past variations in monsoonal climate. Based on the multiproxy studies on the sediment cores, a coherent relationship between the intensities of the monsoon and glacial–interglacial conditions and a strong atmospheric teleconnection between the Asian and North Atlantic climates has been suggested. Terrestrial sediment cores clearly established that the variations in the monsoonal climate and/or change in glacial extant played an important role in varying weathering/erosion in source regions and relative supply of sediments. Marine sediment studies presented a more complicated picture because their...

Bioavailability of pollutants in bacterial communities of Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil BJM
Fonseca,E.M. da; Baptista Neto,J.A.; McAlister,J.J.; Smith,B.J.; Crapez,M.A.C..
Processes involving heavy metals and other contaminants continue to present unsolved environmental questions. To advance the understanding of geochemical processes that involve the bioavailability of contaminants, cores where collected in the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, and analyzed for bacterial activity and metal concentrations. Results would suggest an extremely reducing environment where organic substances seem to be the predominant agents responsible for this geochemical process. Analytical data showed sulphate reduction to be the main agent driving this process, since this kind of bacteria was found to be active in all of the samples analyzed. Esterase enzyme production did not signal the influence of heavy metals and hydrocarbon concentrations and...

Overview of the Bosphorus Depositional Fan from Data Sets Recovered on the Black Sea Shelf off the Strait of Istanbul ArchiMer
Lericolais, Gilles; Algan, Oya; Morigi, Caterina; Okay, Seda; Kirci-elmas, Elmas; Cifci, Gunay.
Since the preliminary mapping of the northern Bosphorus outlet of the Black Sea continental shelf by the 90’s NATO project, an important data set bringing morphological, seismic and sedimentological information is now available to describe there a shallow fan system consisting of a main channel and short distributary branches, levees, and sediment waves, correlative to a southern source flowing to the north. This paper brings complementary quantitative data from landscape at the eastern and western shelf area of the shallow fan system. It confirms that the Bosphorus outlet fan preserved on the shelf surface provides an important record of surface water flow. To deduce the history of the Marmara/Black Sea last connexion, it is fundamental to understand how...

Palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic analysis of Holocene deposits from the Adriatic Sea: detecting and dating short-term fluctuations in sediment supply ArchiMer
Vigliotti, L; Verosub, K; Cattaneo, Antonio; Trincardi, F; Asioli, A; Piva, A.
We present palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic results from five cores collected in the basin of the Adriatic Sea. Four cores (PRAD2-4; KS02-246; CSS00-23 and CSS00-07) were collected along a shore-parallel transect whereas the fifth core (AMC99-01) was retrieved in the central Adriatic in 250 m water depth, on the floor of the Meso-Adriatic Depression. After alternating field demagnetization, the natural remanent magnetization (NRM) directions show a characteristic and primary magnetization of the sediments that is representative of secular variation of the geomagnetic field. By combining C-14 dating and the ages of magnetic inclination features, it has been possible to establish an age-depth model for all of the cores. Precise identification of the secular...
