Inappropriate soil management practices that have been applied in the Yafacuy River basin, Venezuela, have led to the loss of soil organic matter and crop productivity. The incorporation of composted organic residues has been suggested as an alternative management practice in order to increase organic matter (OM) content and crop yield in these soils. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different application fates of an organic fertilizer obtained from sugarcane industry wastes, filter cake and bagasse with or without inorganic fertilizers, on microbial biomass carbon (MB-C), soil organic carbon (SOC), maize (Zea mays L.) yield and N, P, K content in the maize leaves, in Yafacuy River basin. The experiments were established in an... |

Dichromate oxidation and dry combustion analysis were evaluated as reference methods to determine organic carbon in Brazilian soils using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) as an alternative. The main objective of this study was to evaluate which of the reference methods could provide a calibration model with higher predictive ability. A total of 161 soil samples obtained from horizons in full profiles (Parque Estadual da Mata Seca, Minas Gerais State, Brazil) were used. Models were mean centered and built from partial least squares. The dichromate oxidation method presented a lower accuracy when compared to dry combustion analysis as reference for NIRS. Figures of merit such as sensitivity, analytical sensitivity, detection and quantification limits,... |

BACKGROUND: Maritime Antarctica is severely affected by climate change and accelerating glacier retreat forming temporal gradients of soil development. Successional patterns of soil development and plant succession in the region are largely unknown, as are the feedback mechanisms between both processes. Here we identify three temporal gradients representing horizontal and vertical glacier retreat, as well as formation of raised beaches due to isostatic uplift, and describe soil formation and plant succession along them. Our hypotheses are (i) plants in Antarctica are able to modulate the two base parameters in soil development, organic C content and pH, along the temporal gradients, leading to an increase in organic carbon and soil acidity at relatively... |

Soil organic carbon (SOC, determined with dichromate oxidation) accumulation was evaluated at three ICLF sites of different ages (2, 4 and 11 years) and soil textures (469, 198, 632 g kg-1 clay) in southern Goiás state of Brazil. SOC stocks were accessed at 0-30, 30-100 and 0-100 cm soil layers under the tree-rows and between tree-rows. SOC stocks were calculated based on equivalent soil mass, using pasture, in which the ICLFs were implemented, as reference. Our objective was to investigate the potential of trees in accumulating SOC in ICLFs. Dunnett?s test was applied to check the effect of trees on soil C stocks within each location using the linear mixed model. More SOC was measured under tree-rows at all sites and all soil layers, compared to the alley... |

The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of a long-term experiment on soil spectral properties and to develop prediction models of these properties (soil organic carbon (SOC), N, pH, Hh, P2O5, K2O, Ca, Mg, K, and Na content) from texturally homogeneous samples (loamy sand). To this aim, chemometric techniques, such as partial least square (PLS) regression and support vector machine (SVM) classification, were used. Our results show that visible and near infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) is suitable for the prediction of properties of texturally homogeneous samples. The effects of fertilizer applications were sufficient to modify the soil chemical composition to a range suitable for using VIS-NIRS for calibration and modeling purposes.... |

ABSTRACT Soils in semi-arid regions have been degraded by overgrazing, which reduces the production capacity and, in certain situations, leads to desertification. An alternative to recover degraded areas is the fallow period, which works through the resilience of the soil itself, increasing the supply of organic matter and improving soil physical properties. Thus, the objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that 14-year grazing exclusion improves soil physical and chemical attributes in degraded areas under desertification. The study was conducted in Irauçuba, Ceará State, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme corresponding to four areas and two managements (overgrazing and fallow), with four... |

This study aims at evaluating the influence of replacing areas of Quercus pyrenaica, which represents native vegetation of Serra da Nogueira, NE of Portugal, by Pseudotsuga menziesii on carbon stocks in forest floor and mineral soil. Three sampling areas were selected in adjacent locations with similar soil and climate conditions. The first area, covered by Quercus pyrenaica (QP), represents the original soil. The second area is in a 40 years old stand of Pseudotsuga menziesii (PM40), and the third one, also under Pseudotsuga menziesii, is 15 years old (PM15). In each sampling area, at 10 randomly selected points, samples were collected in the forest floor (0.49 m2 quadrat) and in the soil (at 0-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm depth). The forest floor stores 17, 13... |

The increase in atmospheric carbon content, as expected considering actual trends, draws attention to the highly valuable role of forest ecosystems in the global carbon cycle. Accordingly, the carbon storage capacity by different species should be a decision support tool when introducing new forest species. This study aims at evaluating the influence of replacing areas of Quercus pyrennaica, which represents native vegetation of Serra da Nogueira, in the northeast of Portugal, by Pseudotsuga menziesii on carbon stocks in forest floor and mineral soil. Three sampling areas were selected in adjacent locations with similar soil and climate conditions. The first area, covered by Quercus pyrennaica (QP), represents the original soil. Country-specific soil organic carbon (SOC) estimates are the baseline for the Global SOC Map of the Global Soil Partnership (GSOCmap-GSP). This endeavor is key to explaining the uncertainty of global SOC estimates but requires harmonizing heterogeneous datasets and building country-specific capacities for digital soil mapping (DSM).We identified country-specific predictors for SOC and tested the performance of five predictive algorithms for mapping SOC across Latin America. The algorithms included support vector machines (SVMs), random forest (RF), kernel-weighted nearest neighbors (KK), partial least squares regression (PL), and regression kriging based on stepwise multiple linear models (RK). Country-specific training data and SOC predictors (5 x 5 km... |
