Soil organic matter (SOM) is sensitive to changes in land use and is a key indicator of soil quality. This work evaluates the evolution of the organic matter of an oxisol under a crop-livestock integration system (CLS) installed in 2005 and located in the Cerrado Biome, in Sete Lagoas, Brazil. The CLS system consists of four plots of 5.5 ha each, which in the spring/summer were cultivated in annual rotation with the crops of soybean+intercropping Urochloa, corn+Urochloa consortium, sorghum+Megathyrsus consortium and Megathyrsus pasture. A Floresta Amazônica vem sendo substituída por diversos sistemas de uso, como pastagens e variados usos agrícolas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da implantação do sistema agroflorestal (SAF) na Amazônia sobre atributos químicos do solo em três SAFs, compostos por castanheira, cupuaçuzeiro e pupunheira, sendo o SAF A analisado aos 4 e 19 anos, o SAF B aos 7 e 22 anos, e o SAF C aos 6 e 21 anos após a implantação. A conversão de floresta nativa em pastagem provoca mudanças no conteúdo das frações da matéria orgânica do solo (MOS). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as alterações ocorridas nas frações granulométricas e oxidáveis da MOS em Sucessão Floresta - Pastagem no Acre. Após a derrubada e queima da floresta, implantou-se a pastagem de braquiária. Nas duas áreas foram coletadas amostras de solo nas profundidades de 0-5 e 5-10 cm. In agricultural activities, the main greenhouse gases (GHG) are those related to C and N global cycles. The impact of agriculture on GHG emissions has become a key issue, especially when considering that natural C and N cycles are influenced by agricultural development. This review focuses on CO2 and N2O soil emissions in terrestrial ecosystems, with emphasis in Chilean and similar agro-ecosystems around the world. The influence of land use and crop management practices on CO2 and N2O emissions is analyzed; some mitigation measures to reduce such emissions are also discussed here. This study aims at evaluating the influence of replacing areas of Quercus pyrenaica, which represents native vegetation of Serra da Nogueira, NE of Portugal, by Pseudotsuga menziesii on carbon stocks in forest floor and mineral soil. Three sampling areas were selected in adjacent locations with similar soil and climate conditions. The first area, covered by Quercus pyrenaica (QP), represents the original soil. The second area is in a 40 years old stand of Pseudotsuga menziesii (PM40), and the third one, also under Pseudotsuga menziesii, is 15 years old (PM15). ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the short- and medium-term effect of biochar on soil microbial properties, organic carbon and nitrogen in an Oxisol from Brazil. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design consisting of five levels of biochar (0, 2, 4, 8 and 16 Mg∙ha–1) with and without of synthetic fertilizer: 0 and 200 kg.ha–1 of synthetic fertilizer N-P-K (00-20-20). The following soil properties were determined: microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN), microbial respiration (MR), metabolic quotient (qCO2) and microbial quotient (qMIC), total organic carbon (TOC) and nitrogen (TN). Country-specific soil organic carbon (SOC) estimates are the baseline for the Global SOC Map of the Global Soil Partnership (GSOCmap-GSP).
