Soils of the tropics are prone to a decrease in quality after conversion from native forest (FO) to a conventional tillage system (CT). However, the adoption of no-tillage (NT) and complex crop rotations may improve soil structural quality. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the physical properties of an Oxisol under FO, CT, and three summer crop sequences in NT: continuous corn (NTcc), continuous soybean (NTcs), and a soybean/corn rotation (NTscr). Studies related to the monitoring of soil quality by physical attributes are important for the evaluation and maintenance of the sustainability of agricultural systems, besides indicating the appropriate management of the environment, aiming at its conservation and productivity. Soil organic carbon (SOC, determined with dichromate oxidation) accumulation was evaluated at three ICLF sites of different ages (2, 4 and 11 years) and soil textures (469, 198, 632 g kg-1 clay) in southern Goiás state of Brazil. SOC stocks were accessed at 0-30, 30-100 and 0-100 cm soil layers under the tree-rows and between tree-rows. SOC stocks were calculated based on equivalent soil mass, using pasture, in which the ICLFs were implemented, as reference. Our objective was to investigate the potential of trees in accumulating SOC in ICLFs. Dunnett?s test was applied to check the effect of trees on soil C stocks within each location using the linear mixed model. Use of VIS-NIRS for land management classification with a support vector machine and prediction of soil organic carbon and other soil properties Ciencia e Investigación Agraria

The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of a long-term experiment on soil spectral properties and to develop prediction models of these properties (soil organic carbon (SOC), N, pH, Hh, P2O5, K2O, Ca, Mg, K, and Na content) from texturally homogeneous samples (loamy sand). To this aim, chemometric techniques, such as partial least square (PLS) regression and support vector machine (SVM) classification, were used. Our results show that visible and near infrared spectroscopy (VIS-NIRS) is suitable for the prediction of properties of texturally homogeneous samples. The effects of fertilizer applications were sufficient to modify the soil chemical composition to a range suitable for using VIS-NIRS for calibration and modeling purposes....

Resumo: Protocolos para quantificação e monitoramento do estoque de carbono (C) no solo vêm sendo desenvolvidos para diversas culturas e sistemas de produção, mas pouco se conhece sobre a variabilidade desses estoques em sistemas agroflorestais. O objetivo da pesquisa foi caracterizar a variabilidade dos teores de C e nitrogênio (N) de camadas superficiais de um solo (0-5, 5-10, 10- 20 e 20-30 cm) sob sistema agroflorestal de base agroecológica, instalado em 2009 na Embrapa Meio Ambiente, em Jaguariúna-SP. ABSTRACT Tillage systems can influence C sequestration by changing aggregate formation and C distribution within the aggregate. This study was undertaken to explore the impact of no-tillage without straw (NT-S) and with straw (NT+S), and moldboard plow without straw (MP-S) and with straw (MP+S), on soil aggregation and aggregate-associated C after six years of double rice planting in a Hydragric Anthrosol in Guangxi, southwest of China.
