Antiviral Activities of Sulfated Polysaccharides Isolated from Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (Rhodophytha, Gigartinales) and Boergeseniella thuyoides (Rhodophyta, Ceramiales) ArchiMer

Water-soluble sulfated polysaccharides isolated from two red algae Sphaerococcus coronopifolius (Gigartinales, Sphaerococcaceae) and Boergeseniella thuyoides (Ceramiales, Rhodomelaceae) collected on the coast of Morocco inhibited in vitro replication of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) at 12.5 mu g/mL. In addition, polysaccharides were capable of inhibiting the in vitro replication of Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) on Vero cells values of EC(50) of 4.1 and 17.2 mu g/mL, respectively. The adsorption step of HSV-1 to the host cell seems to be the specific target for polysaccharide action. While for HIV-1, these results suggest a direct inhibitory effect on HIV-1 replication by controlling the appearance of the new generations of virus and...

Characterization, chemical modifications and in vitro anticoagulant properties of an exopolysaccharide produced by Alteromonas infernus ArchiMer
Colliec-jouault, Sylvia; Chevolot, Lionel; Helley, Dominique; Ratiskol, Jacqueline; Bros, Andrée; Sinquin, Corinne; Roger, Olivier; Fischer, Anne-marie.
A new low-molecular-weight 'heparin-like' component was obtained from an exopolysaccharide produced by a mesophilic strain found in deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Data concerning the structure of the native high-molecular-weight exopolysaccharide (10(6) g/mol, 10% sulfate content) are reported for the first time. Two depolymerization processes were used to obtain low-molecular-weight (24-35 x 10(3) g/mol) oversulfated fractions (sulfate content 20 or 40%), Nuclear magnetic resonance studies indicated that after sulfation (40%), the low-molecular-weight fraction obtained by free radical depolymerization was less sulfated in the 6-O-position than the fraction depolymerized by acid hydrolysis. The free radical depolymerized product also had sulfated residues in...

Sperm and Egg Jelly Coat from Sea Urchin Lytechinus variegatus Collected in Rio de Janeiro Contain Distinct Sialic Acid-Rich Polysaccharides BABT
Valle,Gabrielle M.; Cinelli,Leonardo P.; Todeschini,Adriane R.; Brito-Gitirana,Lycia de; Vilela-Silva,Ana-Cristina E.S.; Mourão,Paulo A.S..
This work found the occurrence of a distinct sialic acid-rich polysaccharide in the sperm surface of the sea urchin Lytechinus variegatus, which differed significantly from a similar molecule found in the egg jelly. The sperm polysaccharide extracted by protease digestion was purified using anion exchange chromatography and characterized using agarose gel electrophoresis, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. This polysaccharide was highly sulfated and composed almost exclusively of N-acetylneuraminic acid. In contrast, the sialic acid-rich polysaccharide from the egg jelly was composed of N-glycolylneuraminic acid and contains several other hexoses in its structure. This new molecule could help to characterize in further detail the...
