Improvements in working conditions, sustainable production, and competitiveness have led to substantial changes in sugarcane harvesting systems. Such changes have altered a number of soil properties, including iron oxides and organic matter, as well as some chemical properties, such as the maximum P adsorption capacity of the soil. The aim of this study was to characterize the relationship between iron oxides and the quality of organic matter in sugarcane harvesting systems. For that purpose, two 1 ha plots in mechanically and manually harvested fields were used to obtain soil samples from the 0.00-0.25 m soil layer at 126 different points. The mineralogical, chemical, and physical results were subjected to descriptive statistical analyses, such as the... |

At the start of the 1990s, DFID support to sustainable agriculture mainly comprised a series of projects which supported GoK’s national agricultural research and communications services. DFID support for district level agriculture service delivery activities, principally through the EMI project, had recently ceased, although with the expectation that further support would be developed. In response to a DFID (EA) policy decision to withdraw from infrastructure development, support for construction of rural infrastructure had also wound down. 2. Following the death of the Senior RNR Adviser for Kenya in 1992, development of the SA portfolio drifted until 1994, when appointment of a new Senior RNR Adviser was rapidly followed by approval of several projects,... |

Serious methodological and policy hurdles constrain effective natural resource management that alleviates poverty while protecting environmental services in tropical watersheds. We review the development of an approach that integrates biodiversity conservation with agroforestry development through the active involvement of communities and their local governments near the Kitanglad Range Natural Park in the Manupali watershed, central Mindanao, the Philippines. Agroforestry innovations were developed to suit the biophysical and socioeconomic conditions of the buffer zone. These included practices for tree farming and conservation farming for annual cropping on slopes. Institutional innovations improved resource management, resulting in an effective social... |

This study is part of an evaluation of DFID’s support for sustainable agriculture (SA) since the early 1990s. Five projects were reviewed, representing around 75% by value of DFID project commitments to SA during the 1990s: Namibia • Kavango Farming Systems Research and Extension (KFSRE) • Northern Namibia Environmental Project (NNEP) • Fisheries Information Advisory Services (FIAS) Botswana • Botswana Range Inventory Management Project (BRIMP) • Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics Section (VEES) |

This study was conducted to measure the effects of the timing of nitrogen fertilization (NF) on soil N-NH4+ and N-NO3-, macronutrient contents in the leaves and grains, and the grain yield of super early genotypes (SEG) of common bean. Field experiments were performed for four growing seasons in an Oxisol soil in Santo Antônio de Goiás, Brazil, using a randomized block experimental design in a split plot scheme. The plots were planted with common bean SEG, and the subplots were the NF timings, including a treatment without N fertilization. The available soil N with improved fertility and medium to high levels of organic matter were enough to meet the N demands of the common bean crop in order to achieve yields of up to 3,000 kg ha-1. Fertilization with N,... |
