Effect of sustained virologic response on the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with HCV cirrhosis BJID
Cheinquer,Nelson; Cheinquer,Hugo; Wolff,Fernando H; Coelho-Borges,Silvia.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence suggests that sustained virologic response to interferon treatment decreases incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with hepatitis C virus cirrhosis. This study was designed to compare the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma among cirrhotic patients exposed to interferon based treatment with or without achieving a sustained virological response, in order to evaluate the role of interferon itself in the prevention hepatocellular carcinoma. METHODS: A cohort of 85 patients with compensated hepatitis C cirrhosis was followed after treatment with interferon and ribavirin. Sustained virological response was defined as negative polymerase chain reaction assay 24 weeks after the end of treatment. Patients were...

Thyroid dysfunction in Turkish patients with chronic hepatitis C receiving peginterferon plus ribavirin in the period of 2005-2010 BJID
Barut,Sener; Gunal,Ozgur; Erkorkmaz,Unal; Yildiz,Feyza.
Interferon-α based therapy for chronic hepatitis C (CHC) is associated with thyroiditis and thyroid dysfunction (TD). This study investigated whether TD during pegylated interferon-a (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin treatment favors sustained viral response (SVR), and also the association between TD and PEG-IFN formulations. This retrospective study was performed in CHC patients who had received PEG-IFN plus ribavirin and had been followed for six months after treatment. Several factors were compared between patients with and without TD. 119 patients were included in the study. De novo incidence of TD was found to be 16.8%, and 16 of the 18 patients with TD achieved SVR. Although this rate was higher than patients without TD according to univariate analysis,...

Association between insulin resistance and sustained virologic response in hepatitis C treatment, genotypes 1 versus 2 and 3: systematic literature review and meta-analysis BJID
Laurito,Marcela Pezzoto; Parise,Edison Roberto.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Controversial results have been found in literature for the association between insulin resistance and sustained virologic response to standard chronic hepatitis C treatment. This study aims to provide a systematic literature review with meta-analysis, in order to evaluate if insulin resistance interferes with sustained virologic response in patients infected by the HCV genotype 1 versus HCV genotypes 2 and 3, undergoing treatment with interferon and ribavirin or pegylated interferon and ribavarin. METHODS: Systematic search was performed on main electronic databases until May 2012. Primary outcome was sustained virologic response, defined as undetectable levels of HCVRNA six months after the end of treatment. Meta-analytic measure was...
