The study was carried out to determine tensile and shearing properties of leaves in cultivars (Ba11356 and Ba11358) of festulolium (Festulolium loliaceum), compared with those of diploid (Ba11353 and Aurora) and tetraploid (Ba10855 and Prospero) cultivars of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). Four successive samples of grass leaves were taken from pure stands of third-year swards during July to September, 2004 in Obihiro, Japan. Tensile strength was measured using a 100 N load cell of the breaking test machine. Shear strength was measured about 5 mm apart from a broken point in the tensile test using a pair of the scissors. Cross-sectional area, DM weight and width of leaves were significantly higher in tetraploid perennial and festulolium than in... |

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thickness (between 80 and 120 µm) on apparent opacity, water vapor permeability and mechanical properties (tensile and puncture) of oat starch films plasticized with glycerol, sorbitol, glycerol:sorbitol mixture, urea and sucrose. Films were stored under 11, 57, 76 and 90% relative humidity (RH) to study the mechanical properties. It was observed that the higher the thickness, the higher was the opacity values. Films without the plasticizer were more opaque in comparison with the plasticized ones. Glycerol:sorbitol films presented increased elongation with increasing thickness at all RH. Puncture force showed a strong dependence on the film thickness, except for the films plasticized with sucrose. In... |

Abstract: Tensile strength is an important property of hemp fibre, because it determines the mechanical strength of fibre-based products such as biocomposites. Commercial discrete element software, Particle Flow Code in Three Dimensions (PFC3D), was used to develop a numerical model which simulates tensile tests of hemp fibre. The model can predict the tensile properties (such as strength and elongation) of a hemp fibre. In the model, a virtual hemp fibre was defined as a string of spherical balls, held together by cylindrical bonds implemented in PFC3D. To calibrate the model, tensile data was collected for both unretted and retted hemp fibres using a commercial Instron testing system. The average fibre diameter was 0.34 mm for the unretted fibre and... |
