Introduction of non-indigenous species can alter marine communities and ecosystems. In shellfish farming, transfer of livestock, especially oysters, is a common practice and potentially constitutes a pathway for non-indigenous introductions. Many species of seaweeds are believed to have been accidentally introduced in association with these transfers, but there is little direct evidence. We experimentally simulated the transfer of oysters from the Thau Lagoon (France). These transfers involved increasing periods of aerial emersion and additional brine and hot water treatments. The Mediterranean Thau Lagoon is an important oyster farming area in Europe. Oyster growth rates are among the highest in France, although chlorophyll a concentration is low. Previous studies have demonstrated that picophytoplankton, nano-microphytoplankton, dinoflagellates and loricate ciliates such as tintinnids are abundant. However, heterotrophic flagellates and aloricate ciliates have not been investigated. The aim of this study was to assess picophytoplankton, protist and zooplankton abundances in the Lagoon and to investigate the particular structure of the microbial food web, which may explain such paradoxical oyster growth. The economic impacts induced by the harmful effects of pollution or negative natural events are heterogeneous and depend on the event type and intensity, as well as the characteristic make-up of agents affected. This vulnerability analysis evaluates how each agent (or group of agents) is potentially affected by an external stress or event with respect to risk of exposure, sensitivity or intensity of subjection, and coping capacity of these agents in order to avoid or reduce its effects. Use of dynamic energy budget and individual based models to simulate the dynamics of cultivated oyster populations 5

We successfully tested a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model of the oyster Crassostrea gigas using published environmental data and growth data collected in Than lagoon (France). Estimates of most DEB parameters were based on independent datasets and only two parameters were calibrated using our datasets: the shape parameter, which was used to convert body volume into shell length, and the half-saturation coefficient, which controlled the functional response of assimilation to food concentration, represented by chlorophyll-a concentration. The DEB model proved to be robust and generic: it was able to reproduce oyster growth in Than lagoon and other ecosystems.
