Direct weed control of annual as well as perennial weeds was necessary to reduce the amount of weeds in organic crop rotation experiments at three locations in Denmark. For Canada thistle, however, the rotation was the most important controlling factor: the rotation with grass-clover had less thistle biomass than the one without.

Cultural methods for controlling docks in organically farmed grassland (extension 1998-99) (OFT0115T) Organic Eprints

Docks are considered to be one of the main weed problems of grassland. The absence of an effective non-chemical control may be a deterrent to organic-conversion for farmers accustomed to using herbicides for dock control. This work addresses this problem in the context of MAFF policy to encourage more farmers to adopt organic farming, and to encourage a reduction in the use of herbicides in farming generally. Current achievements and future directions of physical weed control in Europe Organic Eprints

This paper reviews major results achieved with physical weed control methods and strategies especially adapted for horticultural and agricultural crops. Mechanical methods, such as weed harrowing and inter-row hoeing, have provided promising results in cereals, pulse and oil seed rape, particularly when they are part of a strategy that also involves cultural methods such as fertiliser placement or crop seed vigour. In row crops, intra-row weeds constitute a major challenge, and research has mainly aimed at replacing laborious hand weeding with mechanization. A number of investigations have focussed on optimising the use of thermal and mechanical methods against intra-row weeds. Cut fallow to replace black fallow in an organic production system Organic Eprints

Couch grass (Elymus repens) has large impact on yield and management strategies in temperate areas of the world. The control is to a large extent based on repeated soil cultivations in organic farming. Our aim was to investigate methods to improve the competitive effect of white clover by management. The hypothesis was that cutting (fragmentation) of the rhizomes by making slits in the soil by a spade (spading) would increase the number of couch grass shoots, thus improve the effect of repeated mowing. We conclude that Cross cutting to 10 cm could reduce the amount of rhizomes, but that the effect is variable. We also conclude that the cross cutting do not improve the effect of mowing. Cross cutting reduce the amounts of couch grass shoots.

Dabei sein und mitreden, wenn es um Roboterisierung der Landwirtschaft geht Organic Eprints

Seit Jahren wirbt FiBL-Direktor Prof. Dr. Urs Niggli in seinem Institut, bei biobäuerlichen Verbänden und in der Öffentlichkeit um Akzeptanz für Gentechnik, Nanotechnologie sowie Digitalisierung und Roboterisierung von Landwirtschaft. Diese Techniken sollten den biologischen Landbau ‹weiterentwickeln› helfen, sodass dieser nachhaltig und konkurrenzfähig vorne mit dabei bleibe oder werde. Seit 2017/18 gibt es nun drei Robotisierungsprojekte am FiBL, zwei davon im Ackerbau, geleitet von Hansueli Dierauer: «Ich muss schauen, dass für uns im Biobereich da auch etwas heraus schaut. Wenn es keine Bio-Lösung gibt, gehen wir leer aus.»

Das EU-Projekt OSCAR (Optimising Subsidiary Crop Applications in Rotations): Ergänzende Pflanzen zur Systemoptimierung in der pfluglosen Landwirtschaft: Neue Genotypen gesucht Organic Eprints

In diesem Artikel konnte nur ein sehr kleiner Einblick in das Projekt OSCAR gegeben werden. Inspirationen kommen vor allem aus Südamerika, wo die Direktsaat bereits Standard ist. Die erfolgversprechendsten Arten als Zwischenfrüchte und Untersaaten werden von mehreren Projektpartnern gemeinsam mit beteiligten Landwirten in der Praxis getestet. OSCAR wird jedoch zum Projektende noch keine fertigen Lösungen bieten können. Mit dem sich deutlich wandelnden Klima auch in Deutschland werden Boden- und Wasserschutz immer wichtiger. Dazu tragen die Lösungsansätze von OSCAR bei. Es sind aber bereits einige Folgeprojekte entstanden. Dazu gehört vor allem ein Projekt zur Züchtung von Untersaaten unter den Bedingungen der Minimalbodenbearbeitung.

Nicht nur durch ihr Konkurrenzverhalten können Pflanzen andere Pflanzen hemmen oder verdrängen. Neueren Datums ist die Erkenntnis, dass etliche Pflanzenarten auch Stoffe über die Wurzeln ausscheiden, welche die Keimung und Entwicklung von Nachbarpflanzen behindern. Mit Sperberaugenn haben FiBL-Forschende das Habichtskraut entdeckt, das im Obst- und Weinbau zur Lösung des Unkrautproblems in den Reihen beitragen könnte.

Kløvergræs opformerer kvik, men reducerer tidsler. Efterafgrøder opformerer kvik, men ikke tidsler, sammenlignet med stubbearbejdning. Når man har problemer med rodukrudt, er det vigtigt at forstå, hvordan sædskifte og andre kulturforanstaltninger påvirker rodukrudtet, både på kort og langt sigt. Desværre findes der kun få data for den langsigtede effekt af kløvergræs som grøngødning og efterafgrøder på rodukrudt. I det økologiske sædskifteforsøg (Askegaard et al. 2004), som blev anlagt i 1996, har vi fulgt udviklingen af især kvik og tidsler frem til nu, og det giver os mulighed for at udtale os om betydningen af de forskellige faktorer.

Der er ikke noget nyt i at økologer har deres udfordringer med ukrudt. Visse har bedre kontrol med ukrudt end andre – dog kan der være år, hvor selv de flittigste landmænd får et ukrudtsproblem. Meldinger rundt omkring tyder på, at 2010 var sådan et år. Som det fremgår af ”Vejret i vækstsæsonen” (side 2) har vejret i den overståede dyrkningssæson været usædvanligt. Dette har givet ukrudt herunder rodukrudt gode vækstvilkår i forhold til afgrøden.

Der Stoppelhobel – eine Alternative zu herkömmlichen Geräten der Stoppelbearbeitung im Ökologischen Landbau? Organic Eprints

Before introduction of herbicides shallow ploughing was a widespread method of stubble tillage. In June 1999 25 trials on 7 organic farms were set up in South Germany. Three treatments of stubble tillage were compared: 1. “Stoppelhobel” (shallow ploughing); 2. “non inversion” stubble tillage (mostly chisel); 3. “control” (no stubble tillage). Results are shown for the first 16 months after initiating the experiments. In spring 2000 significant differences were assessed between the treatments “control” on one hand and “Stoppelhobel” and “non inversion” on the other with respect to perennial weeds.
